GLAM India is a community group that supports collaboration between the Wikimedia community and GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) institutions across India. The initiative aims to strengthen the representation, accessibility, and sustainability of Indian cultural heritage on Wikimedia projects.

Mission

To facilitate ethical, inclusive, and sustainable GLAM-Wikimedia collaborations in India that improve access to knowledge, promote open culture, bridge the existing knowledge gap that persists in India, and support cultural institutions in sharing their collections with the world.

Objectives

  • Support GLAM institutions in India to engage with Wikimedia projects.
  • Improve the quality and coverage of Indian cultural heritage content on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, and related projects.
  • Build capacity among Indian Wikimedians and GLAM professionals through training and mentorship.
  • Encourage best practices in digitisation, metadata, licensing, and community collaboration.
  • Support coordination among existing and emerging GLAM Wiki initiatives in India.

Scope

GLAM India supports work related to:

  • Museums, libraries, archives, galleries, and memory institutions
  • Universities and research institutions
  • Community archives and underrepresented heritage collections
  • Open access, open data, and open licensing efforts

How to Participate

Participation is open to Wikimedia contributors, GLAM professionals, students, researchers, and educators, or anyone interested in open knowledge and cultural heritage.

To get involved, please add your name to /Members page, and kindly consider, inter alia:

  • Joining or starting discussions on the project's talk page
  • Participating in activities and events
  • Uploading GLAM related media
  • Proposing collaborations or outreach initiatives
