Shape the future of GLAM on Wikimedia with us!

The GLAM Wiki community has been growing and evolving for years — and this year’s GLAM Wiki Conference marks an exciting new chapter!

On November 1, we’re hosting a special workshop designed to help shape the future of GLAM in the Wikimedia Movement. It’s a hands-on, action-focused session, created in collaboration with stakeholders in the GLAM Wiki Community, the GLOSS working group, the Content Partnerships Hub, the Wikimedia Foundation, and many others.

This session is open to all and we especially encourage those interested in developing strategies for the future of GLAM, Culture and Heritage activities from across the movement to join.

Creating Context: Based many surveys and reports, the global GLAM community feels like a city without a central square - people are working hard in their own neighbourhoods but lack a common meeting place and a functional infrastructure. Asking for a town planner, not a mayor, a structure that can fix the plumbing (tools), create a shared map (strategy) and maintain the public square (community and meetings).

The big debate is about what kind of buildings to construct together considering the different User Groups, Thematic Orgs, Hubs, and Chapters. The key is to find a balance between the flexibility of a seedling and the stability of a mature tree, while learning from the past by avoiding solutions that are like asking a part-timer to do a full-time job.

The Session Goal: At the end of our time together in Lisbon, we are hoping that you have agreed on what that central square looks like (what is your collective impact?) and how you’re going to collaborate on building that central square. It’s important to acknowledge who is and isn’t in the room and setting out on the baseline of the mandate of those who are in the room and the agency of this particular group, until the group is more defined and the mandate is even clearer.

Method:

We're using large, printable templates that teams work on together, all at the same time. It turns the space into a kind of a drawing room that maps out the entire strategic journey in a hands-on, visual way, all while we talk about and work with the visual maps.

It is important that everyone who will be part of this process have read the background information in advance, because of our very limited time together in person. We need to be able to build upon previous work and not start entirely from scratch.

Key objectives

[edit]
  • Define and map interdependencies between GLAM entities, communities, and support structures.
  • Promote practical, actionable outcomes, potentially in the form of work-groups or task forces.
