GP Campione: a car race from the past is a project that aims to bring together various Wikimedia communities to document a pioneering motor race: the Circuito Campione, held on September 26, 1937, in Campione d’Italia, a small Italian municipality located entirely within Switzerland.

Why was GP Campione chosen as the subject of the project?

Because it combines several favourable factors, all present at the same time:

  • A topic that is historically relevant in its context
  • Virtually no existing coverage across Wikimedia projects
  • Access to extensive documentation to support contributors
  • Collaboration with a local association that organises a historical reenactment of the race, providing additional sources and clarifications
  • A subject broad enough to allow contributions from people with different interests and skills
  • A scope small enough to be feasibly completed within a few weeks

When is the project open?

The project will run from August 1 to September 30, 2025, with a highlight event from September 4–7, during which Wikimedia Italia and Wikimedia CH will host a stand in the paddock of the historical reenactment. The aim is to engage the public and promote Wikimedia projects through outreach activities.

Who is organizing the project?

The initiative is primarily supported by Wikimedia Italia and Wikimedia CH, in collaboration with Victorious, a Swiss association dedicated to the history of motor racing.

Which communities are expected to be involved?

The project targets contributors from at least the Italian, German, and French-speaking communities, particularly from Italy and Switzerland (but not exclusively). Contributions may take place on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and possibly Wikivoyage, depending on contributors’ interests and expertise. Contributions on OpenStreetMap are welcome as well.

Wikimedians and OSMers interested in promoting and explaining Wikimedia and OSM projects to the general public are also welcome to join Wikimedia Italia and Wikimedia CH at the stand during the historical reenactment.

Which are the main targets of the project?

  • Engage the community in creating and improving Wikimedia coverage of:
    • the Circuito Campione race held on September 26, 1937
    • the drivers who participated in the race
    • the municipality of Campione d’Italia
  • Encourage contributions to improve OpenStreetMap (OSM) coverage of Campione d’Italia
