Ghanaian Languages Wikimedia Community Meetup is an annual gathering for Wikimedians working on indigenous Ghanaian language projects, including Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wiktionary, Wikisource, and other Wikimedia platforms. The maiden edition was held in 2023 in Tamale, while the most recent one will be held in 2025 in Kumasi. The meetup provides a platform for training, collaboration, and strategizing on how Wikimedia projects can help preserve and promote Ghana’s linguistic diversity.

The 2025 edition is expected to take place in Kumasi from 26 – 28 September 2025.

History

[edit]

The GLWC was established to bring together contributors, community leaders, and language advocates to strengthen Ghanaian language Wikimedia projects. Since its inception, the event has served as a collaborative space for skill-building, networking, and developing strategies to increase the visibility of local languages on Wikimedia platforms. Over the years, GLWC has expanded to include discussions on open knowledge, digital language preservation, and community sustainability.

Objectives

[edit]

The main objective of GLWC is to build sustainable Wikimedia communities for the benefit of Ghanaian languages and the Wikimedia movement.

Specific objectives include:

  • Build capacity for contributors working in indigenous Ghanaian languages.
  • Connect language communities within Ghana and in the diaspora to share resources and expertise.
  • Promote collaboration among Wikimedia language projects to increase impact.
  • Advocate for the inclusion and growth of Ghanaian languages in the global Wikimedia ecosystem.
