Purpose of the report
This form is for organizations receiving Annual Plan Grants to report on their results to date. For progress reports, the time period for this report will the first 6 months of each grant (e.g. 1 January - 30 June of the current year). For impact reports, the time period for this report will be the full 12 months of this grant, including the period already reported on in the progress report (e.g. 1 January - 31 December of the current year). This form includes four sections, addressing global metrics, program stories, financial information, and compliance. Please contact APG/FDC staff if you have questions about this form, or concerns submitting it by the deadline. After submitting the form, organizations will also meet with APG staff to discuss their progress.

Multimedia: Mediagrant+We Photograph Czechia: We have 11 active photographers in MG activity and in WPC activity together. Finally we achieved 10 active users of WPC, but not the new ones (0). We didn't set the goal for Mediagrant. We have decided not to develop this activity further. GLAM and Community: Five editathons in which participated 84 persons. Aim (30) fulfilled.
Wikidata/Tech: Most of these were Wikimedia Hackathon participants, other events were less participant-heavy.

Multimedia: Mediagrant+We Photograph Czechia: Mediagrant hasn't been attracting almost any new people last years. Moreover, the original members are leaving the movement (29 of them were active last year). It was one of the reasons for creating WCP activity, which should be more welcoming for photographers. We did not achieved the planned amount of 10 new users for this year - there was almost no propagation outside of our community. GLAM: to turn focus of our editathons on beginners became a profitable strategy, 84 people in general and 27 newcomers is highly sufficient number. The aim was 40 participants in general and 30 newcomers from it. Moreover we have 39 new registered users thanks to two contest.
Wikidata/Tech: We don't focus much on educating new editors at the moment, which can be seen in the low number of newly registered. Most new Wikidata enthusiasts had already edited Wikimedia projects before.

The overall nr. for the year was set on the level of 2610, which we managed to reach and even we went little bit over by the end of the year.
Multimedia: Mediagrant+We Photograph Czechia: Nr. consists of new or edited WP, WD and WC pages. We achieved the goal of 10,000 content pages in WPC (in fact: 11 088). GLAM and Community: Nr. consists of new WC, WD and new or edited WP pages. Special thanks to the Prague City Hall's donation, which considerably have exceeded the aim set at 5,000.
Wikidata/Tech: Certainly, robotic tools enable to reach great numbers of content pages edited. Most were either "authority items" of the National Library, Bibliography of Czech History database or small heritage items.

Telling your program stories - all programs
Please tell the story of each of your programs included in your proposal. A. EDUcation Programs
|A. EDUcation Programs|
|Description: EDUcation Program is a part of the association's activities to expand awareness of Wikimedia projects and also the active Czech community. The main target groups are youth, students, and seniors. In addition to organizing courses, we also provide support for creation of target groups for shared or supported editing - such as themed editing or wiki clubs.|
|1. Seniors Write Wikipedia (SeWW)|
|Description: SeWW’s activities are aimed at addressing a target group of seniors who, with their knowledge and experience, can become Wikipedia editors.
Seniors are addressed at our regular courses directly and indirectly through local libraries, where they can attend courses led by librarians. Because of this, we also try to educate librarians in editing and conducting courses. SeWW has great PR potential, because it enables us to promote the activities of WMCR and thereby further promote the meaning of Wikimedia projects. Programme in general is running sucessfully, the main part are Senior courses which take place on regular base. In first half of 2019 we (co)organised 7 courses.
|1.||More seniors involved in activity||We are encountering success stories such as in České Budějovice where a former participant of course for Seniors actually became member of our lecturer team.||We are encountering success stories such as in České Budějovice where a former participant of course for seniors actually became a member of our lecturer team. It is the same story in Prague. So two of our lecturers are alumni participants.
We organised Senior Wiki Town editathon together with lecturer and community in September. Some of your alumni are joining community events such as Wikiclubs, Wikiconference and other.
At the end of the year, we discussed an option to start an alumni club to enlarge the team of supporters of SeWW programme and the beginning of 2020 we implemented it.
|2.||Involve more librarians so that the programme can be more widely disseminated.||In addition to the regular activities planned in the training of librarians, we organised Wiki Week with Libraries in the autumn with support of SKIP (Association of Librarians and Information Officers) and National Library. This event took place in October. Described below in more detail. |
|a.||a) More emphasis put on the development of library courses.
There is a separate system of education for Librarians:
i) Basics editing course - the broadest target group
ii) Editing workshop - a follow-up course for deepening knowledge from the basics of editing
iii) How to teach seniors to edit Wikipedia - a specific course for the librarians, who would like to organize local senior courses
|The courses as described are up and running and other than librarians, they as well attracted other target groups - the general public, social workers, NGO representatives, teachers. One (3rd) cycle took place in spring.||4th cycle of the librarian course took place in September/October. On top of that we organised 3 smaller-scale local events for librarians - 2x in Ceske Budejovice, and in autumn as well two-phase tailor-made course in town Ústí nad Labem in cooperation with local technical&science library SVKUL.|
|b.||b) Follow up activities for Librarians||Follow up activities are mainly oriented on keeping librarians involved in delivering their own activities after the courses.
The main support measure we identified was mentoring services once they finish the courses. Since spring we have offered it only on a voluntary basis, and there has been no interest from the librarians’ side to use this service.
|We tried a different approach within the autumn set of courses, to be more direct with mentoring and aftercare. Still, we didn’t fully implement it on a large scale, more based on individual cases. At the same time, we planned changes for the upcoming 2020. |
Wiki Week with Libraries - during which individual librarians can get involved and create content about their own library or town - successfully took place. We managed to involve all together 48 editors (37 new, 10 alumni participants of librarian courses, 1 active Wikipedian), from those 6 didn't, in the end, produce anything until we close the Dashboard, others encounter challenges such as working only in sandpit area or being deleted from main space.
In the end, there have been 44 articles added (18new) or edited by 40 editors. They manage to enlarge the number of articles connected to Czech libraries by 20% since the numbers are generally not so high. On top of that tens of photos and visuals have been added to Wikimedia Commons. We evaluate the event successfully and we are in the process of following in 2020 by making the challenge a long-term event for librarians to get involved in.
|c.||c) The formation of a lecturer's team - a team of external collaborators who are able to teach about Wikimedia projects - paid external staff who is flexible in terms of time and location of workshops||We established a team of semi-external lecturers, some are Wikipedians by origin, some are teachers, librarians or former participants of our educational activities. 1st lecturers meeting in 2019 took place on 23rd February.||2nd lecturers meeting took place 28th of September 2019.
The first one focused a lot on the establishment of this wider team of external co-operators, the 2nd one focused mainly on sharing experiences and good practices, further group-building, and identifying topics to further focus on in future.
Many of the outcomes and learning from 2019 influenced the planning of Workplan 2020.
|d.||d) Accreditation for existing trainings||--||The work on the accreditation process was planned for 2nd half of the year, however since it is not the top priority for running the whole Education programme in Wikimedia and we were still undergoing changes and implementing the strategy of the movement, this task has been postponed to 2020. At the same time, the work on accreditation is a rather extended job and should be done once we can really benefit from this procedure.
We are talking here about accreditation of courses for librarians.
|Lessons learned:||Despite the mentoring, which as the voluntary offer, was not successful, we didn't have any other significant learning plans for this part of the year in this program.||We should, where we have partners and general interest for cooperation. Support rather small scale actions once there are partners on the other side willing to work shoulder to shoulder towards success. Like the 3 additional librarian courses were in 2019.
We are depending on many outside aspects influencing our work - the interest and capacity of participants and stakeholders to get involved and more importantly to follow up on actions taken. While we are rather successful in terms of SeWW courses, with the courses for Librarians there are many elements having an impact on our goals.
|2. Students Write Wikipedia(SWW)|
|Description: Students - especially universities - are a good target group for generating quality content for Wikimedia projects as part of a range of topics in the classroom.
Addressing students is traditionally done through university educators who choose to edit Wikipedia as one of the forms of examination in their course. The involvement of teachers is ideally assisted by a nearby Wikipedian. The Wikipedians are students who become Wikipedia ambassadors who can assist professors at the university.
|1.||Increase the amount of content||The amount of content is growing steadily. From January until April, the whole programme ran with basic maintenance and support for teachers - helping with Dashboard, initial workshops - introduction to SWW programme etc.||In the end, we didn´t manage to organise 2nd Edu council meeting - instead, several teachers and stakeholders have been contacted individually. Regarding all the changes we have undergone, the stability of a program and at least stable growth of content is already a success. We benefit from several specific long-term cooperation and involvement of active Wikipedians among teachers community to keep the programme rolling. We delivered a couple of specific assistance, such as a workshop for students and teachers of deaf studies, who keep on contributing.|
|2.||Increasing the number of teachers involved||We faced changes in the first half of the year - the idea was to hire a coordinator for program Students write Wikipedia from January. It happened in April and the new coordinator worked for two months when we decided to end the cooperation. At the same time, we underwent a hand-over of the Education manager position due to the maternity leave. Those aspects have slowed down our internal processes in this program in general and influenced the situation, in which Wikipedia Ambassadorships had to be postponed and frozen in the current state of affairs.||Later we re-evaluated the whole idea and decided not to implement Wikipedia Ambassadorships as it was planned at all. Instead, we refocused in the programme on different steps, such as to focus on specific smaller cooperations and connection to GLAM programme. We kept the one coordinator for both of the programmes - Seniors Write Wikipedia and Students Write Wikipedia. In those terms, the Education programme team stabilised itself. We decided to critically review the programme in the year 2020 and specific steps have been a plan in the Workplan 2020.
We have been in touch with some new teachers and several multiplicators in the community in order to increase the numbers for 2020 - seeking closer cooperations with those who are interested.
|a.||Promotion among teachers||In January there was a meeting (Edu council) with currently involved teachers from both programmes - StudentsWW, Teach (with) Wiki, where we identified obstacles for teachers to start using wiki in teaching.||In August and beginning of September - we did a new campaign to attract new teachers and info packages/newsletter was sent out to a currently engaged group of teachers to make sure they will continue with us next year again and receive the support they might need. We started to collect success stories of those who already implemented wiki in their teachings and learn from those stories for further practise and recommendations.|
|b.||Teaching tools for teachers||Tools have been maintained, the information and training services have been provided to those involved.||Better support for using Dashboard - we have held several talks with teachers in practise to collect the challenges and to initiate a FAQ document.
We prepared and offered online training at the beginning of the new semester for those who are new or need to refresh their know-how, but unfortunately, there was close to zero interest from the side of contacted teachers. It is time to reflect on how to better reach out to those, who could benefit from such support.
We underwent an update of the website, instruction manual etc. We created a draft of a checklist for teachers - inspired by the checklist we already have for lecturers.
|c.||Creating Wikipedia ambassador concepts: - Wikipedists who can support university staff in implementing wikipedia concepts and activities in the university.
i. Activities: Addressing future teachers, librarians, IT´s (students), long-term collaboration
ii. Teacher support - help with using tools - Dashboard, editing -
iii. Creating of the environment and conditions that will support them
|The concept of a Wikipedia Ambassador ("Wikiambassador") has been inspired by concept working well in Serbia, which previous education manager Gabriela brought with her as inspiration from international Edu staff meeting.
As much as some sort of Ambassadorship makes a lot of sense and would be a valuable support measure, the original idea of initial weekend training has been postponed. In May and June, preparation jobs for promotion and the launch of the first Wikiambassador training were done, the call was published, but a) afterwards the coordinator was changed, b) there was no real interest in this offer when it was launched.
We decided to rethink the concept and came up with several steps to take in autumn in this regard.
|By the summer we still believed with a partial revision we will launch the whole Wikipedia Ambassador project.
We wanted to identify several student/university events where we can present this program and idea behind Wiki ambassadorship. Through the process and revisiting the whole idea we decided not to run it at all since their position of such (most likely) students would not be easy at all plus their turn over would be big. Instead, we have started to look and be inspired more by the idea of "Wiki residency", which seems to be working better in GLAM. However, this is a long road ahead to reach the level of partnerships with some of the universities to be able to set such residency in practice. The situation at each university is very unique and it is therefore hard to implement the general programme. We need to come closer to our stakeholders and lead the dialogue, figure out the most effective ways of support, which will function for universities and cost- and effort- effective for WMCZ.
|Lessons learned:||The programme deserves a bit more of focus and everyday care for certain period for its stability and further development. Cooperation (especially) with universities is specific since it is very diverse and different procedures will apply on each university, different needs will be identified across the different fields (technical, humanistic, medical, etc.). We need to talk with representatives (teachers, students) and in focus talks identify their specific needs. We need to find a solution how to effectively incorporate those who add content, not in Wikipedia, but e.g. for Wiki Commons - different support structure in Dashboard, different work to be done on metrics, etc. We as well identified a significant amount of initiatives working with wikis at universities, but not contributing to the content of Wikipedia itself - rather using their own internal wikis etc.||In the 2nd part of the year 2019, we held several discussios, try to reach out to those, we haven't talk to yet and see what can be done and innovated in the student's programme.
An the same time this was happening while creating the Workplan 2020 we had already implemented the new strategy given by WMF. In those terms, the work done was prep work for upcoming period. We will see if that was right and there is still some more to harvest. Another lesson learned; we could do less with a bigger impact if we focus more on collaborations and mutual planning within our 3 programmes.
|3. Teach (with) Wiki|
|Description: Many active members of the community became Wikipedians in their adolescence, so we try to reach out to this target group at a time when they are forming their sense of self and choosing their free-time activities.
At the same time, we are raising a generation that will be able to use information from Wikimedia projects in the education process and understand the concept of their free use. With this idea, we appeal to secondary and elementary school teachers - the goal is that teachers will create and share these tools themselves for how they creatively teach (with) wiki.
|1.||Simplify the process of teaching (with) Wiki for teachers||In Teach (with) Wiki program we are more or less on the right track with foreseen specific steps to fulfil this overall goal by the end of the year 2019. We proceeded with the bigger part, which was work on the methodological guide, we delivered several courses and workshops for teachers, some of them in cooperation with our strategic partners for the field of teaching with wiki.||Unfortunately by the end of the year, we didn't yet have the methodological guide physically present, the same goes for the leaflet about programme Teach (with) Wiki - this further explained below - we have been through general strategic planning and most of the work by the end of the year was prepping for the year 2020.|
|a.||Create a clean landing page for Wiki Learn - a know-how area and methodological guides which teachers can use - crowdsourcing activity collection - a tool for creating materials by teachers themselves||Due to personal changes in the Education team and other limits in 1st half of year, there has been only maintenance of the current state of the page, the other steps have been frozen. We profit from the fact that one of our active lecturers - author of the methodological publication - has created for his own need a very structured user-friendly site about his Teach (with) Wiki activities.||We are still in the process, but many good practises and ideas have been collected in the meantime.
There will be several case studies/good practises available to get teachers inspired by practical delivery of the activities.
Setting up a new landing page is part of a wider process of restructuring and updating all the Education programme pages, creating clear link and division between them, targeting more diverse groups we have involved in educational activities.
|b.||Create a Methodological Guide for Teachers -How to teach (with) Wiki? - a base created by WMCZ tutors||The methodological guide for teachers has been written during the last three months, while many parts of the content such as specific activities and methods have been developed and tested already before. At the moment we have in our hands a final draft of a compact brochure consisting of approx. 30 pages, including an introduction to Teach (with) Wiki programme, 5 different methodological blocks with elements such as a handout for a teacher, handout for students etc. The content of the 5 elements makes a logical structure leading into pupils being able to use Wikipedia for learning purpose, critically review the source of information provided, being able to correctly quote from Wikipedia as a source and last but not least contribute to the content of Wikipedia, if they wish to take that step. The publication is written in the Czech language.||Jobs to be done on the publication have been postponed - we hope to have it published in the first half of 2020.
New logo for the publication and Teach (with) Wiki programme has been developed.
We hold several critical reviews of the publication. The publication has been as well introduced among the international community (WM Education Foundation and during EDU outreach meetings with other affiliates). The publication will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons as well and spread to the wider interested public of teachers and educators.
|c.||Well-arranged offer of activities for schools and teachers||Specific steps in that regard haven't been taken yet.||This is still to be completed once we finish the processes mentioned above and below this point.
The main step will be to reorganise the current website, give it more clear structure and update the content (mainly overview of the activities which have been taking place). Meanwhile, there has been work done in WP sites, but on our regular website where the education programmes offer will be displayed and easier to access.
During the meetings we hold with some of the teachers and lecturers, we identified the need to display a bigger variety, more solutions, aiming not only at teachers at the 1st grade, but as well at those working in non-formal education field/leisure time activities etc.
|d.||Accreditation for courses||The current Accreditation is valid until summer 2020, however since the time we requested the last accreditation we progressed with the content of the courses, the whole programme is more compact, methods have been properly tested, and we will now have the new methodological publication available.||Since we decided to look at the programme from different angles and some changes might be implemented, it didn't make much sense to continue the accreditation process as it was. Currently, accreditation is still valid.
There have been changes on state-level regarding implementing new education strategy 2030 and within the process of revision of Key competencies and Framework Education Plan (binding framework for schools and teachers). During the year those processes have been frozen and we are still waiting for more clarity which is essential for building up the programme incorrect way.
(Accredited) Educational programmes should be in line with the updated Framework documents so they serve the best to the needs of teachers to develop their own skills according to the scheme.
|e.||PR activities||During the 1st half of the year, the PR focused mainly on the regular promotion of organised courses and covering our social media channels with fresh content on a regular basis.||The plan to produce a leaflet has been postponed to 2020 since we have been discussing some changes in the way the programme is organised and developed. We organised two workshops in October - Prague, and November - Liberec for teachers, organised in cooperation with local Digicentres (where teachers interested in digital technologies and ICT in education can meet, learn and share). A larger training has been postponed by our partner organisation till 2020. We continued with social media coverage and presenting our programme in stakeholder events.|
|Lessons learned:||Even though we aimed to collect structured diverse feedback from currently involved teachers on the methodological guide, the return of the feedback has been very low. Whether we just had bad timing within a school year, the wrong timeline in general, or we tried to outsource an already very busy target group will perhaps remain a question mark.||The essential way though, to gather some learning was to hold individual discussions with those who use Wiki in their educational activities and to those who came to our events to get inspired. The needs can be diverse and we are not able to produce universal solutions. And that is perfectly all right.
For the next period we would like to focus on fewer smaller cooperations, but perhaps working with entire school rather than having a teacher here and there, who will not gain systemic support. This could help us to collect success stories to share and inspire/attract more schools and children organisations in future. To be able to accept diversity and work with it accordingly. There is definitely a limit in HR - the education manager can only spend limited time on this programme. Fundraising and having extra working hours donated to this programme could be beneficial.
|4. The other EDU activities|
|a.||Develop a process of collaboration with lecturers - gradual emerging of a lecturer team||We have good contact with some individual lecturers, involved in different educational projects we currently carry on. As mentioned below, in the current scale personal contact and care for their needs and opinions is the key to having them present and involved. We established a regular one-day meeting with lecturers from senior courses - it is about learning, feedback and sharing with each other the hints and tips from their practise.||The lecturer team of the Senior courses met for the 2nd time in 2019 in September with rather high no. of attendees. Besides the SeWW lecturers, we have a few more of those who are involved in other educational programmes and/or active in the community. According to their expressed needs, we focused mainly on sharing experiences and good practices, further group-building, and identifying topics to further focus on in future. Since some of our lecturers are active Wikimedia CZ members and active contributors to Czech Wikipedia community, we met with many of them at Czech WikiConference in November - especially with those who are involved in other programmes (Teach (with) Wiki, Students write Wikipedia). For 2020 we planned to enlarge the team, steer the possibility to meet across the fields of interest as well with those active in our teacher's programmes and to open up the lecturer's team to Wikidata&tech and GLAM, Multimedia&community programmes, where establishing a team of external experts is needed as well.|
|b.||Wikiclubs - a regular editing meetups of wikipedians - keeping and trying to develop them||Regular Wikiclubs are taking place in three cities - Prague, Pilsen and Havířov.
Unfortunately, Wikiclub in Brno is not taking place this year.
In Prague, the club takes place every week and in general, it is very successful. In the 1st half of 2019, we had 76 unique visitors (in 23 meetings, altogether 211 individual visits, many come on a regular basis or return). Out of that more then half are female, and/ or people with little experience with editing Wikipedia.
|Regular Wikiclubs are taking place in three cities - Prague, Pilsen and Havířov. Prague on a regular weekly basis, Pilsen and Havířov less often but still regular. By the end of the year, Brno Wikiclub was not still renewed. However, the Wikipedia community meeting in Brno is taking place on a regular basis. A new Wikiclub runs at Pardubice, at the local university.
In Havířov a diverse group of attendees is coming to meet every month, with many of them commuting from nearby towns. In Pilsen mainly the former attendees of Senior courses are coming over to meet every other week; for them, this is an effective follow-up activity how to keep their newly gained knowledge in use and practise their skills with editing.
Wikiclub in Ceske Budejovice took place in last Q. of 2019 and there is strong expectation Wikiclub will continue throughout 2020, so far on less regular basis. Participants are mostly recruited from Seniors writes Wikipedia courses, we organise in Ceske Budejovice twice a year.
In Prague, the club takes place every week and in general, it is very successful. In 2019 we had 105 unique visitors (in 23 meetings, altogether 334 individual visits, many come on a regular basis or return). Out of that more then half are female, and/ or people with little experience with editing Wikipedia, so it creates a natural good match the other very experienced half of attendees. They bond well and keep on supporting each other. Regarding the current statistics from Prague Wikiclub, we have overcome last years numbers by far.
|c.||Development of cooperation with experts - methodology, graphics, etc.||Several steps have been taken in the development of our publications and information services (leaflets, online content, social media). We now have a logo available for most of our educational programmes, badges for seniors programme and volunteers etc.||By the end of the year, we published printed guidelines/brochure for beginners, how to edit Wikipedia, based on a well-reviewed and reprinted SeWW guidelines/brochure.
We have been in touch with several people outside of WMCZ - some experts on digital education, critical thinking as well as with active teachers in the community, trying to seek innovations and new rhetoric.
Asking how to communicate our educational programmes to the wider public, not only promoting of editing Wikimedia platforms but as well using those for further learning purposes.
|d.||Basic courses How to edit Wikipedia for the public
a. Activities: targeted thematic editathons

We managed to organise a few courses in partnerships where we provided the knowhow and the partner provided the place, participants, finances etc. It is still in terms of pilots and few realisations but we already have the proof that such offer in our portfolio is beneficial for some of our partners and contacts.|
|e.||Wider connection with GLAM activities||--||We start to differentiate the information for libraries and librarians on our channels - however, this is still work-in-progress.
Connected to it is a more clear description of services.
Senior WikiTown editathon took place in September and was focused on seniors who are usually ex-participants of our courses, but not yet so self-confident with joining other wiki events.
We started more regular meetings with GLAM, Multimedia&community coordinator and seek actively for overlaps and cooperations of our two programme parts. This already paid its benefits, since we were able to get more of our alumni, participants and lecturers involved in GLAM activities and events.
|f.||KISK (Division of Information and Library Studies) - cooperation within social innovations in libraries||We have been in initial contact with KISK and we keep each other informed. KISK has been in recent months piloting some new development and educational programmes with mainly local libraries in smaller cities, helping them to re-purpose their mission and role in the local community and serve beyond library services. Because they have been busy and we were facing hand-over of employees, the next steps in cooperation to be done in 2nd half of the year.||The planned personal meeting with KISK representative was not held by the end of the year, so far both sides have been busy with different agendas. Yet, KISK was and will be involved in the promotion of our course for librarians, Wiki Week with Libraries etc.|
|g.||Czech Wikiconference - as the biggest annual activity for Czech community||Czech Wikiconference is at this the very moment kicking of the preparation phase, there is fixed dated, place and organisational team set.
The first preparation steps started within May and June 2019.
|Czech Wikiconference is by far the biggest event in the fiscal year for the community to meet, share, discuss and learn from each other. It took place on November 22-23, 2019 in Pardubice, a larger city near Prague, for the first time. There is a strong youth base of Wikimedia members, they wanted to bring this annual event within their region.
WMCZ plays an active part in the organization, PR and finances. We were as well involved in the preparation and delivery of the side activities and talks, in a support role for the local team.
|Lessons learned:||The scale we are on at the moment with most of the above-mentioned activities and attempts for cooperation, what is essential is good personal contact, being present in the relations and seek for personal contact with participants, volunteers, local organisers and partners from other institutions. Once the personal contact is established is much easier for us to keep those activities rolling. This fact as well clearly set the limits, as we can not be all the time present everywhere.||The learning stays the same from the mid-term report. To add on, we can do a lot more - with more joy and bigger impact when we are more effective in cooperations with our other two programmes GLAM, Multimedia&Community and Wikidata&Wikitech. During the planned activities, as well as via enlarging the lecturers team and providing them with more opportunities to deepen their competences for all 3 fields of our activities.|
B. Multimedia Programs

|Description: The Multimedia Program supports creation of open source, free license content in general as well as other related community activities.
In addition, the program promotes the proliferation of free license content, most often in collaboration with institutions such as galleries, libraries, archives and museums (GLAM) that collect multimedia content - especially photos, works of art, videos and other works. It also informs and promotes the use of free licenses when making information and media accessible on the Internet.
|1. Mediagrant activity + We Photograph Czechia (WPC)|
|Description: This activity supports community driven free license content creation and acquisition. Mediagrant supports local projects held by the members of Czech community that support free content creation.|
|1.||Piloting and developing the activity: “We Photograph Czechia” (WPC) in the way that the process of taking pictures in total for Wikimedia Commons/ Wikidata is simple and comprehensive.||Achieved. After almost a year of work, we managed to open the most simplified form of support for wiki-photographers under the name Fotíme Česko (We Photograph Czechia). Simultaneously we improved the process of approving financial support (travel costs) for photographers, which is now much more appealing.||We developed an activity We Photograph Czechia in 2018, but the main part of work happened this year. The project turned out to be successful and we fulfilled our plan to create a simple and comprehensive project for supporting our Commons photographers.
As a matter of fact, all of our active photographers have started to use it - as a more practical and accessible tool for uploading pictures. In 2019 they uploaded via WPC 11 000 new pictures on Commons which are ilustrating more than 4100 wikidata items. It is a very sufficient result.
In order to further support the WPC project we developed new video tutorials.
We had also designed, printed and distributed leaflets (see right) and established a Facebook group to mutual communication.
At the same time, there is a space for improvement (taking photos with a mobile app, a necessity of adding categories of pictures, etc.).
|2.||Creating a collaborative group of volunteers for Multimedia||Achieved. A cooperating volunteer advisory group is working smoothly. Several volunteers are available for direct help too, although rather occasionally.||A cooperating volunteer Advisory group continues and is available for a manager of Multimedia.
There is another group of volunteers/organizers/lecturers, who are willing to be helpful in different activities. That allows us to develop more activities for the community. This year we recruited a new and very skilful Wikimedian, who helps us with technical wiki-issues, whenever needed.
|3.||Activation of local communities and projects||Achieved. We have completed the first step to activate the Czech wiki community. We have created a "Community Minigrants" (CMG) project, which aims to financially support community-based wiki projects. Our goal is a community actively involved in the development of Wikimedia projects all around the Czech Republic. We will provide inspiration and support for them.||First successes - the community registered Community Minigrants and accepted the new system of planning their events during the year. They appreciate our suggestions and our support for their offline events.
We also prepared the manuals (with our know-how) for organizing offline events for their future organizers.
However, the official "call to action" for local GLAM-Wikimedians will be launched in 2020.
|a.||Piloting and developing the activity: We Photograph Czechia. We will evaluate the effectiveness of the activity after a defined amount of time.||WPC without any major changes shifted from testing to official mode. Since we have not yet promoted it outside the community, it has just a single permanent and active participant (who belongs to our most productive photographers). We are satisfied with the program for its simplicity and freedom and gave us detailed feedback. We have already incorporated a number of relevant opinions on the project.||In 2019 11 wikiphotographers contributed in WPC by adding more than 11 000 pictures (meaning that the number of photographs was 5 times greater than in this years’ original photo project Mediagrant). Over 4100 of those pictures are being used to illustrate Wikidata items (i.e. we have accrued 2 times more than the preceding year). Concerning travel expenses, total payments to photographers were the lowest in the past few years. The reason is WPC is now oriented on capturing streets which means less and cheaper travels.
We find this activity useful and with great potential for expanding, the key will be now to bring the offer closer to the community (and outside of the community as well) and increase the number of photographers.
|b.||PR for the activity We Photograph Czechia||Due to the trial period and the work on official promotional graphics, we have so far promoted the WPC only in our community, which consists of about 15 active photographers.||Apart from Facebook group and video tutorials on how to participate in WPC, we had developed new promotional leaflets, which we had distributed in approximately 100 public spaces, such as cafes, universities and others around Prague.
Unfortunately, we didn’t get any submission from a new photographer (non-Wikipedian). Therefore it is under discussion how to proceed; the solution could the be to postpone the PR activities and instead focus on eliminating of the program’s barriers (pictures’ categorization necessity, which is incomprehensible for newcomers).
|c.||Create an active advisory group for Multimedia||Already during 2018, we set up an advisory group of 4 volunteers (members of our close community) who have an insight into the areas of the Multimedia program of WMCZ. The program manager is now contacting them whenever he needs feedback or opinion on new plans or project development.
In Multimedia we also used direct, ad hoc help from other voluntary Wikimedians (e.g. to organize events).
|There is an Advisory group of experienced volunteers from the community who help us during the year, mostly giving feedback on our plans and activities. Until now we haven’t succeeded in enlarging this group. We face the problem of competent people being overloaded with other responsibilities. On the other hand, we would appreciate more voluntary assistants, who would be on hand and do the usual work (event pages development, uploading pictures, etc). We will put emphasis on recruiting them from those seniors, who had already gone through our courses for lecturers, but this is more like random luck than certainty and we will need to use other ways in the future.|
|d.||Another community activities prepared in collaboration with members of the community / with community/ by community:||We have created and published "Conditions for organizing community events supported by WMCZ". We responded to the absence of comprehensive rules and the definition of responsibilities of WMCZ and the organizers of events. Anyone who is willing to organize a wiki-action and requests support from WMCZ must meet those conditions.||We found the main volunteer-organizer for all offline events for community members and this is a win-win situation that we wanted to achieve. They organize the events with our support but more independently with mutual collaboration. That means that we can use this model for the upcoming year as well.
Therefore we introduced a new appreciation of the hard work of voluntary organizers of wiki-actions: an electronic wiki-badge called "Duchacek" (referring to the skilful character of Mr Duchacek from the legendary Czech comedy). This year´s laureates are Dominik Matus (for WikiTown), Jaro Zastoupil and Martin Sedláček (for editathon Prachatice 2), Pavel Hrdlička (for Photo workshop). Below is a list of most offline events organized by community members for community and newcomersː
|i. Fotoworkshops||A photo workshop was planned for September 2019.||Photo workshop took place in Ledeč nad Sázavou (from 13th to 15th September 2019). 11 of our photographers participated in it and discussed their experiences of making pictures for Wikimedia Commos, tools, techniques, gadgets etc.|
|ii. (Photo) editathons||Editathon Prachatice 2 was organized on 1st to 3rd November 2019 by Wikipedian Elektracentrum and lecturer Gampe, in collaboration with Museum of Prachatice and under auspices of Mayor of Prachatice. The event was highly successful and diversiform, 17 of Wikipedians participated including editors from Germany and Austria. The organizers trained how to edit Wikipedia several inhabitants and prepared series of seminars run by professionals of the subject. The activity was profitable in terms of involving many local institutions, including the unique one, Sisters of Mercy of St. Borromeo community.|
|iii. WikiTown||The WikiTown is a lively event, which serves to extend Wikimedia’s project with the information on a specific place or city. This years’ WikiTown was organized on 23rd – 25th August in the Moravian town of Litomyšl, under auspices of the local mayor. 11 participants who were there in person created over 100 new articles and 1000 photographs of Litomyšl. The event was covered by the local press (CMS local TV and Czech Radio - Radiožurnál).|
|iv. Wikiexpedition||A WikiExpedition was organized on the last weekend in October 2019. 4 of our experienced wikiphotographers set forth to make photo documentation of not well-covered part of Czechia; Orlicke mountains and its surrounding. Until now they have uploaded over 2000 pictures.|
|v. Photocontest||A new activity developed in 2019, was a contest called the Czech Wiki Photo, created for our volunteer photographers. The jury consisting of two successful wikiphotographers; Michal Klajban and Jakub Fryš, as well as the journalist and Czech Press Photo 2004 winner Jan Rybář, decided to grant Tadeáš Bednarz with the 1st and 2nd price, 3rd place belonged to MIGORMCZ (Wikimedia username). In 2020 we plan to focus on increasing the organization phase and put more emphasis on a larger advertisement of the contest.|
|vi. Editing contest||The Liberty Star competition run from 17th July 2019 until 17th March 2020. We managed to establish a partnership with the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes (ÚSTR) and Albatros publishing house. One of the announced categories in the contest was for the best article written by a beginner. We promoted the competition through Czech Radio, our press release was published in one of the Czech main online media (idnes.cz). We used Wikipedia banner twice which was leading on-site 900 visitors per day. In spite of all actions above, LS competition wasn’t successful with only 40 persons submitting, 4 of them managed to write an article of the decent quality. In 2020 we plan to support the topic of the contest (the Czech history between 1948-1989) by organizing an editathon in cooperation with Václav Havel Library in Prague. The LS competition and editathon were co-funded by US Small Grants.|
|Other community projects - individual community members' activities, such as editathons, photo-expeditions, workshops, etc.||Thanks to the initiative of one community member, we created an open call for editing competition related to the 30th anniversary of the restoration of democracy in the Czech Republic and Slovakia called "Hvězda svobody" (The Liberty Star).
We started to work on the photo competition "Czech Wiki Photo 2019", which will also be a "thank you" to our voluntary photographers. We would like to reward the best ones.
|The initial idea for the competition was proposed by one of our members, however, we had to taken it over, because in the meantime we managed to get co-funds for running the contest thanks to US Small Grants financing.
In general, we support every wiki-organizer who asks us for cooperation. Most often we provide PR and financial support. This year we helped with PR and donated prizes for Popiš památku (editing contest) and Asian month except for those mentioned above.
|e.||Facilitate the creation of manual of instructions and knowledge for the preparation and process of activities. This manual should come from the community and for the community.||We didn't expand any of the manuals in this half-year.||We managed to broaden the know-how in the community. We improved and created the manuals ("How to organize...") for future organizers of WikiTown and Wikiexpedition.|
|f.||Planning of We Photograph Czechia/Mediagrant's community activities - activating a local community for long-term cooperation.||This year we wanted to give more space or projects that originate from the community (editathons, workshops, contests etc). These events should involve other Wikimedians counting newcomers and be in the best scenario, outside of Prague. Therefore we opened the "Community minigrants", a grant program, in which people can ask for financial support for their own wiki-events.||We went through and simplified The Community Minigrants project, which is designed not only for photographers but also for organizers of GLAM projects etc. We managed to create a one-page long presentation, including the application and inspirations for projects development. Until now the organizers of editathons Prachatice 2 and Libraries Week in Broumov used this support. Each of those activities is being described and added to our list of "example to follow" used for PR purposes.|
|Lessons learned:||The lessons learned remain the same as last year: It is not possible to realize all of our original intentions because during the year a lot of activities emerged we had not expected. This year we spent most of our time preparing two competitions (one of the reason is that volunteers are spending less time on it than we expected) and a grant application for the US Embassy. Neither of these activities was planned at the beginning of 2019. Thus, the original plans are postponed again or lasted much longer (eg. promotion of WPC). In the future, it will be better to agree with volunteers in advance on the volume of their work and set up regular meetings.||It shows that the concept of Community Minigrant´s support is a good way for the future development of Czech wiki-community. It can serve to photographers, editors, lecturers and GLAM organizers (not only to the active Wikimedians but also interested people outside of the community). It can also initiate new GLAM collaborations which are often a part of these events. We will promote the CM as possible. A big amount of time this year we dedicated to organizing two new contests: Czech Wiki Photo 2019 for our photographers and The Liberty Star for editors. Such activities are also a way to inform more people about our chapter and attract them to our other programs and activities.
As for WPC: the programme and guidelines are completely ready which consumed a lot of time (we started in 2018). Next task is and emphasizes on promotion, maybe engaging mentors for beginners and further simplification of conditions of programme.
We also saw our limits. The key obstacle on how to push some plans and projects forward was a human factor, since our projects consists in majority of work with volunteers, thus their time and good will to work on Wiki projects are hard to define. Many of the ideas as well as running activities itself are dependent on their skills (IT, tools, etc.), which, sometimes, only one person in community has. Therefore it is important to stay realistic when it comes to the planning or meeting the liabilities.
Lesson learned is also the importance of a detailed, well-planned and extended advertisement of all of the activities and projects (including banners on Wikipedia) as well as lowering the threshold of accessibility (complexity, severity, date, etc), in order to engage the maximum of the participants, including beginners.
|2. GLAM activities|
|Description: As part of the activity, we are creating new partnerships especially with GLAM institutions, to provide or distribute content managed by these institutions under free licenses.
We are also fostering an environment for community members to build partnerships with these (especially local) institutions.
|1.||Creating a community guide for establishing local partnerships||Not accomplished. We have not reached this point. Yet some Wikimedians are reaching out to the institution on their own.||The guidelines for the community were reviewed and discussed in-depth with the community. We started to work on it in late 2019. The guidelines are now finished (2020) on the site glam.wikimedia.cz. The campaign with "Call to action" will be launched in Q2 2020.|
|2.||Establishing new partnerships / cooperation||We have newly established GLAM cooperation with the Prague City Hall, which agreed to share considerable amount of its photographs.||Due to US Grant activities and two competitions, which we organized, we did not manage to devote ourselves to regular communication with GLAM institutions. However, we developed an attractive offer of collaboration, a web and a beautiful flyer, all of the materials are prepared to be dispersed in 2020.
Several valuable partnerships were established:
1) We organized The Liberty Star contest together with the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes (ÚSTR). ÚSTR is a state, scientific institution, which aims to investigate two historical periods, during which Czech republic was not independent; the first one during the Nazi occupation (1939-45) and in course of the Communism supremacy (1948-1989).
2) As a part of Prachatice 2 editathon, we closely worked with Museum in Prachatice, Prachatice municipality, which provided us with the official patronage (the mayor of the town participated in the event in person). We also cooperated with local community of catholic parish of Sisters of Mercy of St. Borromeo in Prachatice.
3) The main partner of WikiTown was the town of Litomyšl, whose mayor participated in the event in person.
4) We managed to involve as a member of the jury Jan Rybář, who was a winner of Czech Press Photo 2004, and who agreed to work with us also on the future projects. The other two members are experienced wikiphotographers, who live abroad. Both of them are eager to continue cooperating with our chapter.
|3.||Centralization of information about existing partnerships and collaborating institutions, and establishing information channels between WMCZ and community||Not accomplished.||Done. |4.||Maintaining and developing existing partnerships||Thanks to the 2nd edition of WikiGap (on March 8th @American Center, Prague) we again cooperated with the Embassy of Sweden, the US Embassy, the Czech Women's Lobby and the Sociological Institute of Czech Academy of Science. The event went well beyond our expectations. 30 people arrived (compare with 7 last year) - probably also thanks to targeting the event on beginners. The event was personally supported by the Ambassador of Sweden in the Czech Republic, Viktoria Li, the Ambassador of Canada, Barbara Catherine Richardson and the Ambassador of USA, Kelly Adams-Smith. All parties are interested in cooperating in 2020.
The American Center also informed us about the possibility of receiving a US government grant for our activities. As a reaction, we immediately designed a two-year project of 5 wiki-events (2 editing competitions, WikiGap in Prague and Brno, LGBT editaton, editaton for NGO's employees) and eventually received great financial support for it. Thanks to this we have also created the position of project coordinator.
As a "thank you" for organizing WikiGap, we were invited to the reception of the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Stockholm (being held during Sweden Wikimania).
|Most of our partnerships are sustained.|
With Embassies od USA, Canada and Sweden we prepared the second editaton WikiGap 2019.
As one of the activities being part of US Small Grants, we organized The Liberty Star contest.
Together with the Goethe-Institut in Prague, we organized two editathons for public and Thomas Mann high school.
Our Prague Zoo resident continues to be active, aside from writing articles he takes pictures.
|5.||Content gain for Wikimedia projects||We received 14,000 photos (capturing the repairs of the Old Town Tower and reconstruction of the Šlechtovka restaurant) from the Prague City Hall.
We attempted to get free media from Post Bellum association, Czech Broadcasting, Sokol association or the author of photos of Prague public transport stops - unsuccessfully so far.
|Besides Mediagrant/We Photograph Czechia projects in 2019, we acquired new images thanks to the editaton Prachatice 2 (thousands of images of this city and region even from past decades from participants, local people and institutions as well), WikiTown, WikiExpedition and resident in Zoo.|
|a.||Establishing new partnerships with central institutions - by a multimedia manager||We created a new partnership only with the Prague City Hall.||We have established one partnership with central institutions (i.e.: state, important in its field etc.) - with the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes (ÚSTR) to participate in our project contest.

|b.||For the community|
|i. Creating complex materials for the community and beyond - over-writing rules for local partnerships (with local institutions)||It is worth considering whether GLAM projects should be negotiated randomly and directly by community members. The founder of GLAM, Liam Wyatt, does not think so. We haven't managed to analyze this idea yet.||The guidelines for the community were reviewed and discussed better with some experienced members of the community. We started work on it in late 2019 and the guidelines are now completely finished (2020) on the site glam.wikimedia.cz. The result is that we (WMCZ) will be contacting central institutions and wiki-volunteers will be contacting local and smaller institutions on their own with the help of our know-how and consultations and smaller financial support in case of editathons, lectures etc|

|Lessons learned:||Similar to the "Mediagrant" activity: Due to unexpected activities we had to postpone the planned ones. In the next period, hopefully, no surprises await us - all major projects and plans are accomplished, so we are strongly focusing on our "GLAM plans".||This year we participated in the creation of Movement Strategy 2030 and it was really helpful and inspirational for us because at the same time we were preparing our Activity Plan for 2020. In Plan, we incorporated the Movement strategy emphasizes on people (not content itself) - newcomers and current wiki-community, new partnerships as a big potential for our development and bigger diversity in general. All of our events and activities reflect and will reflect these recommendations more than before.
Unfortunately, so far we haven´t managed to develop a project of contacting GLAM institutions to collaborate with us. Our focus and capacities were full and we had to converge on the organization of two contests. This "Lessons learned" we will add in the future.
|Description: The aim of the advocacy activity is to disseminate information on the use of free licenses for works made available on the Internet and to promote the principles of free licenses in both European and Czech legislation.
We offer advice to community members in situations where the licensing terms of their works within Wikimedia projects are being violated.
|1.||Participate in the most prominent advocacy promotions||As one of the few European countries, we shut down Wikipedia on 21st of March 2019 in a protest against the draft of The Copyright in the Digital Single Market Directive.||We were involved in a long-term process of implementation of the new directive on The Copyright in the Digital Single Market Directive.
Thanks to our networking activities we have created a new partnership with a law firm - bvp BRAUN PARTNERS - who provides us with a pro bono consultations, so now we can turn to them with any legal issue for free.
|2.||Inform the community of what is happening in advocacy||We managed to inform the Czech public (and the community) about all of the important updates, plans and run activities.||We kept our community informed up to date, which resulted in active participation of one of our members, who was involved in reading through the Directive as well as helped us with formulating our statements.|
|3.||Creating a base of advocacy counseling||Not achieved. See "c."||We achieved the goal. Thanks to our partner, bvp BRAUN PARTNERS law firm, we are able to consult on any legal matter.|
|a.||Processing of basic legal information||We informed the community and the public about the stands of the Wikimedia towards the forthcoming Copyright Directive (The Copyright in the Digital Single Market Directive).||We were trying to provide our community with some basic information on the process of implementation of the Directive into Czech legislation. However, rather few people are interested in it.|
|b.||Participation in the largest Czech / world advocacy activities that directly affect Wikimedia projects||On March 21, the Czech community decided to turn off Czech Wikipedia to protest against some proposed points of the Directive. The blackout of Wikipedia emerged in all the big Czech media. We were also guests on Czech Television and DVTV channel. On this day, Czech Wikipedia received 2.25 million visits.||During 2019-2020(-2021?) Czech Ministry of Culture is implementing the approved Directive into Czech legislation. The process has begun in September. As one of the stakeholders, we were invited to email and live consultations run by the Ministry of Culture. Fortunately, we could use a manual (for negotiating of this implementation) that was prepared by our representative in Brussels, Dimi Dimitarov. This material and other questions we were consulting with our partner bvp BRAUN PARTNERS and few community members. We send our opinions and statements in two rounds to the Ministry of Culture, but we still don´t know, what has been used. The whole process of implementation has not been finished.|
|c.||Create a community advisory tool / authority - for frequently asked questions||At the moment we do not have voluntary lawyers and it would be useful to create a stable legal advisory board.||We achieved the goal. Thanks to our partner, bvp BRAUN PARTNERS law firm, we are now able to consult on any legal matter.|
|Lessons learned:||Within the current personnel capacity of our chapter, we cannot engage in broader activities other than PR and participation in the largest advocacy activities.||Little effort appeared to be sufficient – gaining a law firm and one volunteer, who were engaged in the opinion-forming process together with WMCZ employees. With this, we managed to deal with complex legal matters. We had to admit that work on the Directive was time-consuming work and demanded from us to neglect some of the other activities. We perceive this subject as highly important and thus we decided to carry out the task.|
C. Wikidata & TECH program
|C. Wikidata & TECH program|
|Description: The aim of the program is to assist the development of the technical community and its activities that support volunteer work for Wikimedia projects, while also providing content for Wikimedia projects, especially Wikidata.|
|1.||Maintain existing collaboration with the community||Community is very active and cooperates in topics which were commonly evaluated as key development aspects. A dedicated Facebook group updates posts from the members on a daily basis. The group consists of 125 members at the moment (twice as much as last year) including academics and GLAM employees. Most importantly, there are also power users in this group, able to answer any question, fix bugs or develop completely new tools, For instance, user:Mormegil adapted and improved a tool called "POI importer" which is now used by the Czech community to import data into Wikidata.||In the 2nd half of 2019, the collaboration with the Czech community continued well. We regularly ask them for help (eg. with our new FAQ for institutions) and receive it. We also regularly consult our future plans with the community.|
|2.||Action plan to create a database of small heritage||Several database imports related to our project took place in the first half of 2019, including "Prazdnedomy" database of built heritage and "Drobné památky" database of small heritage (import still ongoing). As more and more GLAM institutions get into contact, we're trying to reach long-term sustainability. The plan is to 1) offer more support to power users and potential power users, eg. through specialized workshops; 2) Write a Wikidata guideline for GLAM institutions to help them understand Wikidata and remove some work from our volunteers.||From the original plan for the database of small heritage sizes, we have progress to an over-arching goal of providing support for all Czech databases. As we cannot do this on our own forever, we have taken steps to achieve sustainable growth, such as our new FAQ for institutions as well as an e-mail OTRS contact to be maintained by the community.|
|3.||Create an community advisory group for wikidata & TECH themes||The first meeting of the advisory group already took place in the 2nd half of 2018 and we are now considering organizing the next one.||The Wikidata advisory group is now well-established and meets twice a year. We have received positive feedback and requests for more frequent meet-ups.|
|4.||Find the Program Coordinator||We currently do not have financial means to fund a project coordinator for this program.||In the 2nd half of 2019 and at the start of 2020, we have taken first steps in order to find a project coordinator for Wikidata program; the board approved this plan and agreed with co-funding from several sources in 2020.|
|5.||Increase the number of Wikimedia Commons mobile app users||Work on the mobile app has been largely passed on to the international group which develops the app and is funded from WMF. In the meantime, we are working on promoting the app in the Czech Republic. The app is regularly featured in our communication channels.||-|
|a.||Wikidata / tech workshops||A wikidata workshop for advanced users took place to improve their knowledge of SPARQL. The goal was to support community and especially the power users within.||Two more workshops were organized in the latter half of 2019 - one for more advanced Wikidata users (on web scraping) and one for librarians in the National Library (15 participants). The events help us spread the word about Wikidata and also develop key capacities inside our small volunteer community. In future, more workshops will be organized in a peer-to-peer learning model.|
|b.||Prague Hackathon 2019||Wikimedia Hackathon 2019 in Prague was successfully organized; it was definitely the most demanding event in the history of our chapter from a logistical perspective. More information will be included in a report. From the perspective of the Czech Wikidata/Tech program, we highly value the meeting of Czech technical users during the Wikimedia Hackathon which attracted 22 Czechs - the largest Czech technical meeting up to date.||-|
|Other activities||We respond to interesting offers as they come and two have especially stood out this year so far. The first is a collaboration with the Faculty of Math and Physics of the Charles University, where a group of informaticians is developing a tool to make regular import from databases easier and more automated (a tool is called LinkedPipes and received a grant from WMF with our help). The second project worth mentioning is our highly successful and dynamic collaboration with the National Library of the Czech Republic, especially its "national authority database". They received a ministerial grant to connect their database to Wikidata and automate regular updates.||LinkedPipes tool is ready and running on several pipelines; we have encountered interest in the tool from the librarian network seeking to work on open structured data. As for the National Library project, this turned out to be a hugely successful collaboration, funded entirely by the library. Our contractor was able to turn a big part of the authority database into structured open data, publish them in a wikibase under CC-0 and use some of the data in Wikidata. Blog post here
|Lessons learned:||As we do not have any paid project managers in Wikidata/Tech, we tried to be relatively modest in our expectations. Still, we seem to be able to fulfil most of the set goals (maybe except the Wikimedia Commons app promotion which has been largely beyond our time capacity). As for workshops, we will probably overcome our goal. Some of the most exciting developments come from long-standing collaboration (Faculty of Math, National Library), underlining the need for stable chapter infrastructure in dealings with this kind of projects.||We had record growth in the quantity and quality of our Wikidata activities in the 2nd half of 2019. Although our community is modest in size, it is very active and takes part in our planning and actual work. Workshops are key to developing key capacities - as the number of existing tools is very high and mastering them is not easy. We also have a very good collaboration with libraries, which are interested in "upgrading" their data to the 21st century, and there is a big promise for 2020 in this field.|

Resources to plan for measurement
- Global metrics are an important starting point for grantees when it comes to measuring programmatic impact (Learning Patterns and Tutorial) but don’t stop there.
- Logic Models provide a framework for mapping your pathway to impact through the cause and effect chain from inputs to outputs to outcomes. Develop a logic model to map out your theory of change and determine the metrics and measures for your programs.
- Importantly, both qualitative and quantitative measures are important so consider both as you determine measures for your evaluation and be sure to ask the right questions to be sure to capture your program stories.
