Overview[edit]

1. In order to support community review, please provide a brief description of your organization's work in the upcoming funding period.

The Activity Development Plan for 2019 is based on the Action Plan 2018 approved by the General Assembly and the experience we have gained so far. We will continue to develop three current programsː

Within the EDUcation program we will focus on local development and sustainability. At present, we have reached the limits of our volunteer lecturers, so we plan to create a lecture team that can meet public demand in the future on topics related to Wikimedia contribution. Within the EDUcation Program, we will keep the main target groups. In the framework of the activity for seniors, we want to focus on more targeted and long-term support for libraries across the country, so the libraries can form local courses for seniors - and share this know-how.

When working with students, we are struggling with the need for long-term support for teachers whose students are working on Wikipedia themes. We want to create a group of ambassador students who can support the development of a student program directly at the university.

In working with teachers who teach (with) Wiki, we want to support the preparation of manuals for individual lessons and their sharing amongst the teachers - by creating a methodical basis and a platform for their sharing.

The Multimedia Program focuses on the development of community activities - whether content creation or community-generated activities. This year, we mainly focused on creating and stabilizing the program. The transformation from voluntary to strategic leadership brought a number of challenges. For the next year, however, we would like to stepback and focus more on the community itself and create conditions for voluntary and joyful community engagement - in particular through Individual Community Projects. We will continue to develop cooperation with institutions, but now rely more heavily on our experiences.. Last but not least, we would like to attract new members to the active community, especially by making the rules more readable and sharing knowledge from experienced members.

Wikidata & TECH program depends on the activities of a small group of active volunteers. The plan is to maintain and develop their existing cooperation with the rest of the Czech community, notably through the education and sharing of their outputs, and last but not least, the acquisition of content, especially for the Wikidata project.

We want to focus primarily on sharing and communication as part of our organization's development. This year was marked by the stabilization of internal processes, strategy, and team. Now we have to focus more on working with active members of the community and promoting their activity and enthusiasm for creating a collaborative environment. We will create community advisory groups for each of the programs that will help us in this connection.

The stabilization of management, including personnel, also enables the stable development of a team of employees, external collaborators and, in particular, volunteers, to allow for long-term development of the organization's activities.

The challenge is to anchor the position of the organization in the Czech environment. We have great know-how, but we cannot use that knowledge to support processes leading to the realization of Wikimedia projects principles - such as the dissemination of free license principles.

In the following year, our chapter is going to host Wikimedia Hackathon, and we hope to assist the development of our Data/TECH community and gain an international experience on this field.

We are hosting Wikimedia Hackathon 2019 - the budget is included in our total expences for upcoming year - this will be around 57,239̪̊USD.

4. How does your organization know what community members and contributors to online projects need or want? Does your organization conduct needs assessments or consult the contributors and volunteers most involved with its work?
  • Online discussions: We ask for opinions on specific issues online on our members wiki and mailing list. However, our experience shows that this usually creates less feedback than in-person discussions. Furthermore, we monitor talk pages and discussions on Wikimedia projects which are related to our chapter's activities. We invited the community to participate in these discussions via announcements in the various village pumps and via the mailinglists.
  • Community advisory groupsː This summer we have created a community advisory group for each program/activity. The group should became a bridge between community and target groups. We asked experienced community members as well as our colaborative partners out of community. Project managers communicate activity development plans with them and discuss a specific topics during the year.
  • Throughout the year, we remain in contact with the community via WMCZ-wiki and the newsletter. A staffmember and a board member are regularly present at the Wikimeetings, monthly meetings of a community, where we can discuss topics face-to-face

A. EDUcation Program[edit]

EDUcation Program is a part of the association's activities to expand awareness of Wikimedia projects and also the active Czech community. The main target groups are youth, students, and seniors. In addition to organizing courses, we also provide support for creation of target groups for shared or supported editing - such as themed editing or wikiclubs.

1. Seniors Write Wikipedia[edit]

SWW’s activities are aimed at addressing a target group of seniors who, with their knowledge and experience, can become Wikipedia editors.

Seniors are addressed at our regular courses directly and indirectly through local libraries, where they can attend courses led by librarians. Because of this, we also try to educate librarians in editing and conducting courses.

SWW has great PR potential, because it enables us to promote the activities of WMCR and thereby further promote the meaning of Wikimedia projects.

c) The formation of a lecturer's team - team of external collaborators who are able to teach about Wikimedia projects - paid external staff who are flexible with time and location of workshops

2. Students Write Wikipedia[edit]

Students - especially universities - are a good target group for generating quality content for Wikimedia projects as part of a range of topics in the classroom.

Addressing students is traditionally done through university educators who choose editing Wikipedia as one of the forms of examination in their course.

The involvement of teachers is ideally assisted by a close wikipedist. The wikipedists are students who become Wikipedia ambassadors who can assist professors at the university.

3. Teach (with) Wiki[edit]

Many active members of the community became wikipedists in their adolescence, so we try to reach out to this target group at a time when they are forming their sense of self and choosing their free time activities.

At the same time, we are raising a generation that will be able to use information from wikimedia projects in the education process and understand the concept of their free use.

With this idea, we appeal to secondary and elementary school teachers - the goal is that teachers will create and share these tools themselves for how they creatively teach (with) wiki.

B. Multimedia Program[edit]

The Multimedia Program supports creation of open source, free license content in general as well as other related community activities.

In addition, the program promotes the proliferation of free license content, most often in collaboration with institutions such as galleries, libraries, archives and museums (GLAM) that collect multimedia content - especially photos, works of art, videos and other works..

It also informs and promotes the use of free licenses when making information and media accessible on the Internet.

Mediagrant's activity supports community driven free license content creation and acquisition. Mediagrant supports local  projects held by the members of Czech community that support free content creation.

As part of the activity, we are creating new partnerships especially with GLAM institutions, to provide or distribute content managed by these institutions under free licenses.

We are also fostering an environment for community members to build partnerships with these (especially local) institutions.

3. Advocacy[edit]

The aim of the advocacy activity is to disseminate information on the use of free licenses for works made available on the Internet and to promote the principles of free licenses in both European and Czech legislation.

We offer advice to community members in situations where the licensing terms of their works within Wikimedia projects are being violated.

The aim of the program is to assist the development of the technical community and its activities that support volunteer work for Wikimedia projects, while also providing content for Wikimedia projects, especially Wikidata.

Shared metrics

  1. Participants: The number of people who attend your events, programs or activities, either in person or virtually. This definition does not include people organizing activities, social media followers, donors, or others not participating directly.
  2. Newly registered: The number of participants that create new accounts on a Wikimedia project. These include users who register up to two weeks before the start of the event.
  3. Content pages: A content page is an article on Wikipedia, an item on Wikidata, a content page on Wikisource, an entry on Wiktionary, and a media file on Commons, etc. This metric captures the total number of content pages created or improved across all Wikimedia projects.

Grantee-defined metrics

  1. Number of objects (applies to: Multimedia Program) and Bytes added (applies to: Education & institutional collaboration and Wikidata & tech programs): Number of objects is a number of newly documented points of interest, suitable for photographic documentation (listed by photographers in our tracker systemexample) – roughly corresponds to a Wikidata item.[1] Bytes added corresponds to number of bytes added to the main namespace of any Wikimedia project, not counting Wikimedia Commons. This metric is very fair in estimating the impact of different types of users – authors of few but extremely long articles as well as prolific writers of a lot of very short articles. We use positive sum to allow compatibility with past data and because we have estimated the amount of content removed (by participants or by other Wikipedians) is rather low.
  2. Geographical coverage (applies to Multimedia Program), Survival (EDUcation Program) and number of active installs (Wikidata & TECH).: Geographical coverage is defined as a minimum number of objects documented for every region (13 regions total, excluding Prague). If the number exceeds a given value for a region, then the goal is met. Survival is a number of editors who made a certain number of edits at a certain time point after their registration. Number of active installs is defined as number of devices using the Wikimedia Commons App at the time of the reporting.

  1. For the purposes of Media Acquisition Program an object is a place or an area valid for photographic documentation. Every item that is documented within the Basic sub-program counts as an object. This means that an object can be a village, a protected area, a famous tree, an event, a monument related to folk architecture or Jewish heritage, a body of water of encyclopedic value or a craft-related item. Monuments that do not correspond with the definition above can be photographed in the scope of village documentation, but these do not count as separate objects. The Media Acquisition program focuses primarily on the objects that are not photographed (or have 1-2 pictures only). Each object should be photographed within this program only once.
  2. Detailed view by activity: Students Write Wikipedia 5%, Seniors Write Wikipedia 15%, Wikicamp 20%, GLAM events 20%.
