CONTENT

Objectives Improve content concerning molluscs and steam ships, and increase editor involvement

750 Wikipedia articles about molluscs and 800 articles about steamships will be improved or created
1000 images about molluscs and 2000 images about steamships will be added to Wikimedia Commons; 750 will be used in articles.
200 active editors and 200 new editors will be involved
75 new editors will still be active after six months

Wiki Loves Steamships photo competition and follow up contribution drive
24 bi-monthly bi-valve edit-a-thons at Regional Mollusc Centre to incorporate materials from digitization efforts, targeting active editors and including new editors
Photography equipment lending program for volunteers at the Regional Mollusc Centre to capture relevant images of molluscs
Monthly workshops for new editors at the National Steamships Museum to build editing skills of steamships enthusiasts

Context

We have identified critical content gaps on our language projects around molluscs and steam ships through our recent anlaysis. Through a community survey, we have also determined that molluscs are of high interest to active editors on our projects, while based on our research we believe steam ships are a good way to draw in new contributors. Through this program, we are seeking to improve content in these areas, engage existing contributors, and draw in new contributors. This nicely complements our digitization efforts that will provide references for articles written about molluscs (see DIGITIZTION program below). We have 40-50 volunteers who we think will be active in this project, based on past participation rates.

DIGITIZATION

Objectives

We will increase the quality of content across our language projects by digitizing important resources that can be used to enrich content. Within 12 months, we will:

Digitize at least 90 rare books about molluscs (baseline: 80 books digitized through the current grant).
Increase the number of active editors in Wikisource from 37 to 55.
Proofread at least 20 rare books about molluscs in Wikisource.
Increase number of pages created in Wikisource to make rare digitized books about molluscs more available.
Use at least 30 of these books for our Content program.

Activities

Support volunteers in digitization efforts by providing scanning equipment and digitization grants
Conducting weekly digitization drives over a 4 month period

Context

We have secured a partnership agreement with an important publisher, to release its books about molluscs under Creative Commons BY-SA 3. These books are critical resources in our local context since we have identified a content gap around resources about molluscs in our local language through recent analysis. These books can be used as references for articles written about molluscs in our language, and will also be useful in our partnership with the faculty of malacology at our local university. To accomplish this, we plan to purchase a scanner, which our organization will own and make available to volunteers for this and future digitization work. We already have 7-10 volunteers who will be available to digitize these resources, and we plan to also draw in new volunteers interested specifically in content about marine science and molluscs through this work.
