Despite global creative and programmatic initiatives that now exist in the movement to tackle the gender gap, this systemic problem remains as a prevalent bias in the Wikimedia projects. As English Wikipedia mentions:
"Gender bias on Wikipedia refers to criticism of the online encyclopedia Wikipedia, and especially its English-language site, arguing that the nature and quantity of its content are biased due to the fact that a dominant majority of Wikipedia editors are male. It is among the most frequent criticisms of Wikipedia, and part of a more general criticism about systemic bias in Wikipedia. The Wikimedia Foundation, which runs Wikipedia, agrees with this criticism and has made an ongoing attempt to increase female editorship of Wikipedia"[1]
Even major governance and evaluation bodies of the movement remain unequal and are headed mostly by men.
Different projects are carried out in the Wikimedia movement but they all remain frequently unconnected, developed independently and with an irregular level of commitment and interest in their local organizations. Since 2012 work around gender gap in Wikimedia it has evolved and changed and the people involved in it are different. Currently there is no specific space for dialogue and exchange that can act in a coordinated but non invasive instance to address common problems and organize common projects.
This event will bring together women from 17 different countries, leaders of their respective communities and with strong experience in the Wikimedia movement and proven engagement with the gendergap topic. Mexican women from four different states will also be invited. And of course we will invite and highly value the presence of Wikimedia Foundation representatives at the event.

WikiWomenCamp 2017. Second Wikimedia Summit is the second meeting of the Wikimedia movement women.
The primary goals of the event are:
- To continue the meeting of gender gap-enthusiasts women in Wikipedia, held in 2012 in Argentina.
- To learn from the experiences of each other and build a global network of support and learning
- To discuss issues related to women participation in the Wikimedia movement and the challenges we face and the possible solutions that we have carried out in our contexts.
The event will take place from July 5th to 9th, 2017 in Mexico City.
Project plan[edit]
Activities[edit]
Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing? What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?
The camp will have an unconference style, where we'll talk about common challenges and solutions, panels to talk about the projects that we do in our countries and workshops where we will learn about things of which we are not experts (advanced wiki functions, creation of templates, Wikidata, bots, etc).
There will also be plenty of spaces for informal meetings for more specific talks and to have more focused learnings and contacts.

About the venue[edit]
The sessions will be held on Centro Horizontal, a private cultural center located in Colima 378, Colonia Roma, Mexico City. The venue have spaces and conditions to run the event. Among Colonia Condesa, Colonia Roma is a well known and touristic area. Besides residential buildings, the neighborhood streets are lined with restaurants, bars, clubs, shops, cultural centers, churches and galleries.
Wikimedia Mexico had in 2016 an editathon in Centro Horizontal.
Planning and preparations[edit]
Organizing team is composed of Anna Torres, Montserrat Boix and Carmen Alcázar. This group is coordinating actions about Women presence in the Wikimedia movement since a few years ago, and each also have separate trajectories in different Wikimedia projects fostering women inclusion. Previous joint projects of the organizing team are La Mujer Que Nunca Conociste Wikipedia Writing Contest and Editatona, an international initiative for building local communities exclusive for women intended for free knowledge production and sharing of digital skills. The decision to take on the second edition of this project was made at Wikimania 2016 in Esino Lario after several discussions of the organizing team. Mexico was chosen as a location because of Wikimedia Mexico’s decided work on Gender Gap since 2014 and which has been an inspiration for many communities in the Wikimedia movement and others, and for its well known and proven experience organizing international conferences (Iberoconf 2013, Wikimania 2015).
Selection of the scholarship attendees[edit]
Attendees to the camp will be invited by the organizing team to attend the event through a full support scholarship considering the work they have done locally and which may be relevant for other women; geographical and linguistic diversity; and their role of leadership on projects that can make women more visible in Wikipedia and encourage others to do so.
Fit with strategy[edit]
Wikiwomencamp aims to improve editor diversity by recruiting new women to join Wikimedia projects in several languages and contexts, and encourage veterans to learn new skills and exchange knowledge to bring back to their respective communities and countries.

Community engagement[edit]
How will you let others in your community know about your project? Why are you targeting a specific audience? How will you engage the community you’re aiming to serve at various points during your project? Community input and participation helps make projects successful.
Wikimedia Mexico is a long established chapter in Mexico. It has contacts and strong ties with the local institutions, authorities and government. After the conference, WMMX would utilize the knowledge gained from the international sharing of experiences and initiatives to make them known and carry them out at a local level for both the Mexican wikimedians and the new Mexican editors that would like to make their first steps in the project. Parallel to this, WMMX has very strong ties with local women groups, so we would do with them both the knowledge-sharing and the carrying out of activities and initiatives that derive from the conference.
Sustainability[edit]
What do you expect will happen to your project after the grant ends? How might the project be continued or grown in new ways afterwards?
I hope there is a continuity in the projects that are proposed during the meeting, that we can establish an international network with onwiki and offwiki multicultural initiatives that can carry out joint projects.
I would also like the participants to take back to their countries ideas and insights that will allow them to attempt to reduce the gendergap in their respective communites.
And of course, I would like that a third edition of this conference happens the following year.

Evidence of past success in executing similar projects[edit]
Wikimedia México: successfully organized Iberoconf 2013 and Wikimania 2015; and Museo Soumaya’s 72 hours Guinness World Record winner editathon (logistics and volunteer coordination performed by chapter).
Risks[edit]
There are two main risks for WWC:
- Visa issues: some attendees come from countries that require a visa to enter Mexico. Risk is low, but we will encourage attendees to have their immigration procedures done in advance.
- Male opposition to initiatives: some attendees may face opposition in their communities while attempting to carry out initiatives learnt at the conference (or because they attended the conference)

Across the globe, in dispersed on-the-ground and online communities, we have many great ideas, but we are quite stove-piped in our conversations.
