Project idea[edit]

What is the problem you're trying to solve?[edit]

There are not enough women contributors on Wikipedia, and the wiki pages referring to women experts tend to give an overweighted focus to their marital life. The workshop will aim at documenting these pages concerning the French speaking part of Switzerland while at the same time empowering women participants to step out as experts in their own area of research. They will be immersed in a male-female environment, and encouraged to be persistent andf thought provoking in their wiki interactions. This will in turn be an empowering experience they can use later in their professional life.

What is your solution?[edit]

Provide a number of six session workshops within an academic surrounding to teach participants how to become a wiki contributor with a special focus on gender awareness. Coach women and male participants in their first contributions to wiki articles and bring awareness on how to overcome stereotypes that hold women back. The participants will all, male and females be working on pages about renowned swiss women, but in their own area of expertise. Here is the general layout of the 6 workshops to be replicated 3 times (18 workshops over one year):

1 - introduction to Wikipedia & explaining the gender gap & identifying participants area of contribution 2 - learning the basics of modifying and creating an article 3 - responding to feedbacks from the community 4 - how to look for information to provide references : technical tools for internet "watch" 5 - using inclusive language: writing techniques 6 - closing and meeting senior contributors to assess contributions

The first session could be started by a conference to be held at the University of Geneva on the 26th of september. The title of the conference will be "Wikipedia : qui parle de quoi?" (Wikipedia : who says what?) to attract attention from targeted participants. These are the people we would be thrilled to invite:

Sue Gardner http://suegardner.org/2011/02/19/nine-reasons-why-women-dont-edit-wikipedia-in-their-own-words/

Lila Tretikov http://time.com/wikipedia/

Dame Stephanie Shirley http://www.ted.com/talks/dame_stephanie_shirley_why_do_ambitious_women_have_flat_heads

Florence Devouard: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florence_Devouard www.youtube.com/watch?v=x61FPodmTdQ

More information on the conference will be available soon! The team has worked on the communication tools (flyers and design). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Anthere/Contribs#Politique.2FPhilosophie.2FEthique

Project plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

- teach how to edit-publish-modify Wikipedia articles
- to teach how to argue, defend and document a point of view
- to help people to build their own information research tools on internet in order to document and reference their articles and modifications
- to promote gender awareness by providing tools to overcome unconscious biases in editing and writing activities
- to coach women in their first steps on Wikipedia in order to help them stand out as experts and be confident in the long run. To help them overcome the first aggressive remarks by a well prepared and documented point of vue
- to help male participants to create a gender inclusive environment
- team building to create a pool of active contributors interested in filling the gender gap

Budget[edit]

In kind contribution:
●room provided by University of Geneva : 5400 CHF
●professional coach specialized in gender issues provided by UNIGE: 5400 CHF
● Wikimedia project manager to teach technical editing aspects : 5400 CHF
● a teacher of internet information searching tools provided by UNIGE : 5400 CHF

Other contributions needed for 18 sessions of 3 X 6 workshops throughout one year
●sandwiches and refreshment for 18 workshops: 3500 CHF
●books on wikipedia and Swiss Women 15 each: 1500 CHF
●promotion, communication: 500 CHF
●writing material for workshops: 500 CHF

Concerning the books, we have found out:

1 that Florence Devouard's book is available on wikibooks so we would probably only order just a few for people who are totally new to this type of books and will need time to transition 2 we would probably be better off by having a set of various book of women's biographies. The president of the Emilie Gourd foundation, who is contributing to the project financially as well, has given us a list of chosen books that could be useful. We would like to order these instead of the proposed two books above.

Community engagement[edit]

We will run three sessions of 6 workshops and encourage participants of the first sessions to become mentors in the following sessions. Participants will receive an UNIGE participation certificate at the end of each sessions, and the last workshop will include the participation of local active wiki contribution. A monkey survey will be run at the end of each session to get a feedack from participants,

Sustainability[edit]

The objective is to encourage the building of a contributing community so we hope that the project will continue after the grant ends. We are already looking out for funding opportunities in the long run. We also envisage publishing a book using the wikipedia editing tool with the help of Mrs Brigitte Mantilleri, who has written and published books in the past.

Measures of success[edit]

- we aim at 15-20 participants per workshop and will target 5 gained active wikipedia contributors per session
- we aim at completing all the entries of the swiss women listed in 2 books: "Pionnières et Créatrices en Suisse Romande", éditions Slatkine, and Mantilleri & Hervé, "Histoires et Visages de Femmes", collection Archives vivantes, Cabédita, 2004
- the ultimate objective is to create a pool of a dozen active contributors interested in filling in the Wikipedia Gender Gap who will continue after the first year

We are targeting a minimum of 60 articles published. We have started to compile all the renowned swiss women having incomplete pages or not owning on a wiki page. For the moment we have identified 170 women, but have not finished the listing. Wikimedia Ch has provided another list compiled by an editathon team in Lausanne and Neuchatel which focuses on swiss women artists. The Emilie Gourd Foundation will also provide support in establishing a list of missing articles, as they have regularly promoted the publication of women's biographies in the past.
