More to learn
[edit]Further details about what I would like to learn.
I would like to learn this skill, as it relates to my career aspirations as a museum professional:
- Innovations in culture and heritage (digitizing cultural knowledge on Wikimedia projects, such as Wikisource, contributing intangible culture to Wikimedia Commons, modeling intangible culture on Wikidata, exploring approaches for decolonization and cultural restitution)
I believe it is necessary to learn about digitization as a museum professional as it provides access to objects of culture for people across the world and helps preserve knowledge about culture. Intangible culture is of significant importance to preserve because there is risk of losing access to culture, Wikimedia is a helpful resource to learn how to do this. I believe I can learn much from the projects that have taken place on Wikimedia Commons. Wikidata can help bridge knowledge gaps on artists, curators and people or projects of special interest and I would like to learn how to access this data for my professional knowledge. Decolonization and cultural restitution are topics of my current studies towards a degree and are necessary to understand relating to heritage and cultural dissemination through Wikimedia.
Stories about sharing
[edit]Interesting stories about applying the skills I want to share.
In terms of Wiki projects I have not yet been able to share any skills as I have just joined the African Wiki Women project. I do have a skill outside of Wiki that has helped me in sharing. This relates to the skill:
- Community development, capacity building and skills development (inviting newcomers, mentorship, connecting people with opportunities/matchmaking, cultivating culture, cultivating belonging, skill development, outreach, experience design, leadership development).
As an Apprentice Curator with my previous organisation Culturally Art Collective I applied most of these skills to the artists who were going to be in exhibitions. I helped them connect amongst each other and encouraged them to setup artist profiles (for about 28 artists). I created a culture of learning about the artists and their motivations which helped support online exhibition planning and execution.
