  • We have attend and participate in the Kolkata Book Fair 2014 (http://www.kolkatabookfair.net/). The 'Kolkata Book Fair' is one of the most prestigious and active cultural event in India for last thirty five years. It is the world's largest non-trade book fair, Asia's largest book fair and the most attended book fair in the world. The estimated number of people attending this book fair is around 1,500,000 people.
  • This would be a major outreach program that would boost the growth of Wikimedia projects in English, Bengali, Odia and Assamese. (Bengali, Odia and Assamese is spoken by 23mn, 3mn and 1mn people respectively.)
  • The plan was to conduct a combination of basic introductory outreach for visitors to the stall and to encourage them to attend basic editing workshops which will be conducted at predetermined hours at the stall. We have attended each day 1 PM to 9PM for 12 days and attended each visitor by our volunteer.
  • A team of 10 community members had mobilised to participate in this event.
  • We have distributed a set Of book-set ( which includes Bengali FAQ, English FAQ, Wikimedia India chapter brochure, Wikipedia Cheat sheet & Wikipedia brochure,)
  • We have shown on spot demo how to edit wikipedia to each visitor.
  • We face each day more than 200-300 people, but we had registered of our recordes their name who are interested to contribute wikipedia. We have registered 1200+ name of our google spreadsheet.

Lessons learned

[edit]
What lessons were learned that may help others succeed in similar projects? Consider the following questions and respond with 1 - 2 paragraphs.
What went well?
This is the first time Bengali Wikipedia Community interact with the people except our previous Workshop event. This is the first time we have face to face with the real people. Our experience that many people don't know about wikipedia, that was approx 20%, and many people don't know about Bengali Wikipedia ( Indic language wikipedia), that was 70% of the visitors.
What did not go well?
We have not enough to space to handle huge people during peak hour.
What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
Volunteer strength was not enough.
