Detailed information about our activities[edit]

Summary of our activities[edit]

15.01.2016 Heroines (disambiguation)[edit]

A day dedicated to presentations, discussions and Wikipedia editing, addressing gender issues around the theme of heroines, with guests Catherine Lenoble and Clara Thomine. Despite Wikipedia's efforts to come up with solutions to live up to their motto “the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit”, not only do the contributors predominantly identify as men, but the contents published also show partial gender representations. With platforms as Wikipedia becoming more important in our society these issues require attention. As a symbolic example, the article ‘heroine’ is automatically redirected to the article ‘hero’, and its emblematic figures are mostly male. Next to the issues of authorship and subject matter, the writing style and article structure that have become idiomatic on Wikipedia cause their own issues. A classic example of this is the amount of articles about women that starts with “this woman was the sister/wife of this famous man” in their first or second sentence. During Heroines, we will take these observations as the point of departure for lectures and discussions, and intervention—the day includes a crash course in Wikipedia editing.

30.04.2016 3 workshops at Girl Tech Fest[edit]

We held 3 workshops as a part of the first annual Girl Tech Fest in Brussels, an event that invites 250 girls in the age between 11 and 15 who are interested in technology to a day of workshops and activities. The event is organized by the Digital Leadership Institute International, and we decided to go for a slightly different approach that what we usually do, not only because the age-group was different (a conscious choice by the DLII, as this is the age a lot of girls drop out of tech.) but also because the girls were technologically very advanced and did not need any guidance as to how to create a Wikipedia account. Using the well-known surrealist game called "Exquisite Corpse" we invited the girls to collectively draw or write stories about 5 subjects: The internet, Wikipedia, A Hero, A Heroine or Someone brave. During and after this exercise we used what they drew or wrote to create a discussion about their choices and teach them how Wikipedia works. Each workshop had 8 participants which is a size we recommend, and the exercises were repeated whenever the participants wanted to as this would naturally follow the discussion at the table. At the end of each session each participant could take home their favorite piece and would in this way also take home a little text that describes the gender gap on Wikipedia.

  • Time: 08:00 - 15:00

Program[edit]
  • 13:00 – introductory presentations of Just For The Record and the gender gap on Wikipedia
  • 14:00 – discussions

  • 18:00 – break
  • 18:30 – presentation by An Mertens: Uncertainty detected?
  • 20:00 – the end

Guest speaker: An Mertens is an artist, writer and storyteller. As a member of Constant she experiments with writing and storytelling on the web, on paper, or in a performative context. She co-initiated Algolit, a workgroup around i-literature, code and texts. This group inspired Algorithmic Storytellers, her actual research on the narrative perspective of algorithms. In 2013 her experimental novel 'Tot Later' was published with De Bezige Bij, Antwerpen.

UNCERTAINTY DETECTED? Developers of AI often use Wikipedia and Wikidata as training material for their applications, because it is the only corpus available that is large, well structured, multi-lingual, peer-reviewed, up-to-date and free to use. Mapping language to a computer model is still an experimental practice which requires compromises and contains many grey zones. An Mertens guides you through a self learning algorithm showing the different stages of the process, while the algorithm tries to detect uncertain zones in the texts she feeds it with.

Guest performer: Zora, a humanoid “girl” robot, developed to perform in residential care centers, in schools with autistic children and in various types of hospitals, trained by Tom Rottinghuis to become a member of the team of the Muntpunt library.

+ A special selection of books by Muntpunt librarian Martine Seys

Lessons learned[edit]

What worked well?
  • We have found that starting the events with a lecture on a specific topic helps the participants engage in the following discussion and edit-a-thon. We introduce that lecture with shorter talks on how Wikipedia works and Just for the Record's background to give context to the lecturer.
  • The layout of the rooms have also proved to have a great impact, and we find that having people sit in smaller groups around islands of tables work better than everyone on one big table as it makes the participants collaborate more.
  • As we also provide a lunch on our bigger events we find that doing a round of introductions before lunch make people talk more to each other, which again helps the workshop flow later.
  • Reaching out to existing institutions in our city is mostly a very positive experience.
  • Always having a person (could be different ones during the day) who is responsible for keeping things on schedule.
What didn't work?
  • We have learned to have more moments where people can ask questions, as our participants come from very different backgrounds.
  • We have learned to subscribe around 10 percent more participants than what we can host as there always are some last-minute cancellations.
What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
  • Every time we host an event there are small improvements that reflect lessons learned on our previous event, however we are not planning any radical changes. If you are planning to organize a similar event together with a group of people we will recommend to make sure to debrief with your whole team afterwards, and try to get feedback from your participants after your event.

Learning patterns[edit]

Outcomes and impact[edit]

Outcomes[edit]

Provide the original project goal here.

Goals[edit]

  • Bring together people around gender gap issues in the recording and writing of history.
  • Find creative and inclusive ways of dealing with these issues.
  • Encourage more diversity on wikipedia by introducing and training collaborators (focusing on the presence of women).
  • Document this process and publish articles on wikipedia.
Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 short paragraphs.

We are proud to have reached and even exceeded our projects goals; It took more time than expected to launch our events, but we have now managed to secure a vast network of partners to collaborate with, and participants interested in our activities and coming back to our events.

  • Bring together people around gender gap issues in the recording and writing of history:
    • As we have mentioned in the activities section, we have had four major one day events, each time bringing around 25 participants to learn about gender biais issues and collaborate to make a change on Wikipedia.
      • Heroines - 15.01.2016 - Pianofabriek, Brussels
      • Gender Redirect - 27.02.2016 - Amazone, Brussels
      • Bots, robots, cyborgs part 1 - 10.06.16 - MuntPunt, Brussels
      • Bots, robots, cyborgs part 2 - 18.06.16 - MuntPunt, Brussels
    • We have even achieved more than planned and reached for a broader audience. On top of the 4 planned events, we have made 4 other presentations for the public;
      • International Women’s Day - 08.03.2016 - MuntPunt, Brussels
      • Alter Egoes - 18-20.03.2016 - Brass, Brussels
      • VUB – gender-neutral writing - 13.04.2016 - VUB library for the Brussels Writing Week
      • Girl Tech Fest 30.04.2016 - European School of Brussels IV, Brussels
  • Find creative and inclusive ways of dealing with these issues:
    • The events are always free, a vegetarian/vegan lunch is provided.
    • We are always trying to expand our network and reach different audiences, this is why we are working with many different collaborators and spaces to host our events. We work to make encounters between different circles of interest to get to know each other by bringing the cultural/artistic sectors in political/associative venues and vice versa.
    • We want to understand more deeply how gender bias happens in society in general, to be able to understand better then how it manifest on wikipedia. To do so, we invite guest speakers to talk about their expertise, we are focussing on research-based or performing artists who bring a creative twist into their inquiry of gender studies.
  • Encourage more diversity on wikipedia by introducing and training collaborators (focusing on the presence of women):
    • The events are open to everyone. We strive to provide a friendly environment where everyone feels welcomed to participate to the discussions in an open way, with special care for women, but also people of all race, class or sexual orientation. We want more diversity on wikipedia.
    • We always have a discussion before, and also after with the participants. This way everyone can share the contributions they have achieved on the platform, but also the technical or relational problems they have encountered on Wikipedia. We are sure that by doing this we can find collective solutions and make it less likely for people to leave the platform after a negative first experience.
    • By having relatively small groups, and events that last a whole day, we contribute to create a sense of community and trust between the participants.
  • Document this process and publish articles on wikipedia:
    • As we have mentioned previously, we keep track of the articles that have been edited each time and record the big lines of the discussions that happened during our events on our meetup page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/justfortherecord . It has proven to be a great tool, for us to keep track and improve our activities and also for others who want to get a sense of what we are doing.

Progress towards targets and goals[edit]

Project metrics

Project metrics Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
30 participants at each event between 18 and 24 participants at each event, plus the participants of supplementary events. There were more people registered, but we had seats limits so we couldn’t do too much overbooking and we had some last minute cancellations. more people came for the first part of the day, and attended to the presentations, but sometimes they couldn’t stay for the editing session, or didn’t want to register on the meetup page.
half of the 30 participants stay active on Wikipedia over 38 editors we have 15 active editors So far we can say that approximately that more than a third of the participants stay active after the event. Talking with edit-a-thon organizers, it seems it is a very good ratio.

So far, our measures at this point (half way) give us
rolling active editor: 15
bytes added: 177703382
newly registered: 25
pages edited: 153676
pages created: 787
existing editors: 38

Global Metrics[edit]

We are trying to understand the overall outcomes of the work being funded across our grantees. In addition to the measures of success for your specific program (in above section), please use the table below to let us know how your project contributed to the Global Metrics. We know that not all projects will have results for each type of metric, so feel free to put "0" where necessary.

  1. Next to each required metric, list the actual outcome achieved through this project.
  2. Where necessary, explain the context behind your outcome. For example, if you were funded for an edit-a-thon which resulted in 0 new images, your explanation might be "This project focused solely on participation and articles written/improved, the goal was not to collect images."

For more information and a sample, see Global Metrics.

Metric Achieved outcome Explanation
1. # of active editors involved 17 All the users who have at least 5 or more edits from January 1 to September 30
2. # of new editors 32 Editors who created usernames one week before the event and up to the end of each event.
3. # of individuals involved 94 All people participating in the project (organizers, users, attendees, etc.)
4a. # of new images/media added to Wikimedia articles/pages 3 Number of images uploaded to Commons and added to Wikipedia articles or other Wikiproject pages (without counting the many images on our meetup page)
4b. # of new images/media uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (Optional) 84 84 images were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
5. # of articles added or improved on Wikimedia projects 157916 1341 pages created + 156575 pages modified on the whole events period (january till september)
6. Absolute value of bytes added to or deleted from Wikimedia projects 180684977 calculated with the global metrics tool, on the whole events period (january till september)
Learning question
Did your work increase the motivation of contributors, and how do you know?

We continue having participants at our event who come because previous participants recommended them to. We get very good feedback from our participants.
