Goal

This project seeks to address and counter Wikipedias well-documented gender bias in practice and theory. It will do so by arranging feminist edit-a-thon on March 8 2015 and March 9 2015 with a connected academic symposium on the morning of March 9. The edit-a-thon will be dedicated to train new editors to write 30 new articles and expand selected stubs in Danish and English on notable female figures, primarily female artists and scientists, plus a few female topics. Fit with strategy

What crucial thing will the project try to change or benefit in the Wikimedia movement? Please select the Wikimedia strategic priority(ies) that your project most directly aims to impact and explain how your project fits. Most projects fit all strategic priorites. Measures of success

• At least 50 women (both gender are invited) total attend and/or facilitate the March 8th + 9th Copenhagen event.
• At least 70 people sign in for attending the March 8th edit-a-thon event (we currently [February 21] have 104 people signed up through FB)
• At least 200 users sign in on the project wiki-page
• At least 50 articles on women are created and/or improved
• Less than 5 articles are speedy deleted, or nominated for deletion.
• One academic article on Wikipedia is submitted and published in a top-ranking international journal
• A guest edited issue of NTIK is published on the basis of the symposium
• Event is covered extensively by Danish national press

Academic impact

• Confirmed: a guest-edited special issue of the peer-reviewed The Nordic Journal for Information and Culture on the basis of the symposium
• One peer reviewed journal article in an international high-ranking journal on Wikipedia as a form of digital archive, dealing with the notion of curation
• Establish a much-needed academic debate about Wikipedia and the importance of (female and minority) scholars considering Wikipedia as a knowledge production output on par with teaching, journal article production and other forms of knowledge dissemination. This event will inaugurate four smaller volunteer workshops for potential (female and minority) editors at the University of Copenhagen
• Enrol in the Wikipedia Educational Program for the next course we have to teach in the vestige of the academic project, YDUN, that is co-organizer of the symposium

Team members

• Maibritt Borgen (Wikiname: Muybridge_dk). Doctoral Candidate in history of art, Yale. Experience as cultural organizer and curator, among other thing of the floating public platform Osloo in Denmark 2010 and at the Venice Biennal in 2011. Organizer of cultural event through the art workers union UKK in Denmark.
• Nanna Thylstrup (Wikiname: Nanna1704). Postdoc at the University of Copenhagen (research area: digital archives). Role: fundraiser, organizer of academic symposium + scholarly dissemination, recruiting new editors and volunteers at the University of Copenhagen. Experience: none with Wiki edit-a-thons, but very experienced organizer of cultural events (art events, club nights, not-for-profit events etc).
• Maia Kahlke. Wikiname Renegade Runner : Digital Fundraising and Development Manager i Greenpeace International. Founder of feminist grassroots organization Renegade Runners. Role: organizer of edit-a-thon, recruiting new editors and wiki-trainers. Experience: none with Wiki-editathons, but very experienced organizer of cultural and grassroots events (LGBT events, club nights, not-for-profit events etc).
• Isabel Ahm. Furniture designer. Co-Founder of feminist grassroots organization Renegade Runners. Role: organizer of edit-a-thon, recruiting new editors and wiki-trainers. Experience: none with Wiki-editathons, but experienced organizer of industry and grassroots events (furniture fairs, not-for-profit events, feminist happenings etc).
• Astrid Dybkjær. Senior consultant, strategic communication. Role: recruiting new editors, devising communication strategy.
• Nanna Balslev. Freelance-journalist, DJ. Member of feminist grassroots organization Renegade Runners. Role: recruiting new editors, devising communication strategy.

• Team members all have extended and diverse national and international networks and proved track records of arranging success cultural events, both volunteer and for-profit

Symposium

Risks

• We are not experts at tracking editor activity and retention. We will work with the WMF Learning and Evaluation team to learn evaluation tools and practice using them.
• Too many participants and not enough facilitators.
• We are ourselves new to the Wikipedia editor environment, and therefore expect a steep learning curve in unison with our editors

Marketing	400	Paid facebook posts will promote the event on social networks. We project 4 paid Facebook posts of 50 dollars each, three to announce the event in advance and one on March 10 to celebrate the event. Posters and flyers (USD 100) will reach users of public libraries and students in high school outside of the organizers' immediate social network, and we hope to introduce an older age group who are currently less active on social media. We also plan a targeted email campaign to reach university professors, librarians, teachers and other purveyors of knowledge.
Food for March 8 + March 9	800	Coffee and snacks (Keep in mind that food is very expensive in Denmark compared to USA). Especially important on March 9 where people will be coming after work
Childcare	200	10 hours @ 20 USD per hour. Participants will be required to sign up for childcare one week in advance and budget will be adjusted according to need

Any effort to improve this should be welcomed and encouraged. This project is a welcome addition to an ongoing effort to encourage more knowledgeable women to participate actively.
•  Support Astrid Maria Bigoni, User:Astroide: Danish Wikipedia is in urgent need of female editors. The gender imbalance has a direct influence on the topics covered in Danish Wikipedia. I hope this project will help to recruit more female editors.
