Wiki Loves Monuments is a well-known and proven worldwide initiative and a very good way of creating freely licensed images that can be used by the Wikimedians to improve the quality of articles on specific Wikimedia projects. With our 'wiki-loves' contests so far, we have found great success, both with our participants and in the public, as it stimulates the community to generate content about cultural heritage sites.

  • creating and editing all the pages with the necessary information about the project (completed);
  • creating/re-desiging the project's official site (21-25 August);
  • constituting the jury for the competition (21-31 August);
  • promoting the competition through the use of social networks and the media (25-31 August);
  • participants uploading photographs on Wikimedia Commons (1-30 September);
  • jury meeting to evaluate the photographs uploaded and decide the winners (1-15 October));
  • organising an edit-a-thon with the goal of adding images to articles (1-15 October));
  • submitting the best photographs to participate in the global competition (15-21 October);
  • organising an event to award the winners of the competition (15-31 October);
  • evaluating the project and compiling the report (31 October-15 November).

Target readership[edit]

The target audience for this project is Wikimedia Commons and all Wikipedias, wherever they feature content about Macedonia, its history, culture etc., but also aiming to illustrate more general concepts via our images (e.g. what an arch looks like, in the article dedicated to it).

Fit with strategy[edit]

What crucial thing will the project try to change or benefit in the Wikimedia movement? Please select the Wikimedia strategic priority(ies) that your project most directly aims to impact and explain how your project fits. Most projects fit all strategic priorities. However, we would like project managers to focus their efforts on impacting 1–2 strategic priorities. Examples of strategic priorities can be found here.

This project, and its uploads on Wikimedia Commons increases the number of users contributing to this project and has the potential to increase the number of active editors overall. Since Wiki Loves Monuments opens up opportunities to promote the Wikimedia community in the country and support active participation of its members, it can benefit to increase professionalisation and effectiveness in the work done by the community members.

Measures of success[edit]

Please provide a list of both quantitative and qualitative criteria that will be used to determine how successful the project is. You will need to report on the success of the project according to these measures after the project is completed. See the PEG program resources for suggested measures of success.

The success of the project will be measured through the following measures:
  • at least 50 participants uploading one photograph or more;
  • at least 20 new users participating in the contest;
  • at least 100 new monuments that have not been photographed yet (there are 1235 listed monuments in the country, and this time we will be glad to get a hundred new ones)
  • at least 200 images (or 7% of total images) used in Wikipedia articles in three months.

Note: In addition to your project-specific measures of success, you will also be asked to report on some global metrics at the end of your final report. Please keep this in mind as you plan, and we'll support you as you begin your project.

Resources and risks[edit]

List of team members:
List of previous photographic competitions organised:

The main risk concerned with this year's project is the uncertainty regarding the effects from reorientating towards quality rather than quantity by abolishing the prizes for the best contributors. Another risk is the limited usage of uploaded images, especially if good-quality images have already been used in the appropriate articles.

Please provide a detailed breakdown of project expenses according to the instructions here. See Budget Guidelines.

Grantees are subject to line-item scrutiny of expenses. Changes to the approved budget beyond 10% in any category must be approved in advance.
