Project scope[edit]

This year Argentina celebrates the bicentennial anniversary of the May Revolution that served as starting point for the its independence, and there are several activities and festivities planned for this event.

We are preparing a book with articles from Wikipedia related to the May Revolution and the Argentine Independence. At the same time, we are also recording the reading of these articles.

The material will be available for download (eBook and Audio Book) here, and we plan on printing several copies of the book, and data CDs containing the eBook and the AudioBook.

Project goal[edit]

Our goal is to bring Wikipedia to people that haven't been in contact with it for lack of internet access or simply because of ignorance, and to gain interest from the second group to join Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.

Of special interest is the Audio Book, that will be given to libraries for the blind, one of the end users Wikimedia projects often neglects, the illiterate, and rural and border radios, which reach in Argentina a much wider public than Wikipedia, specially in poorly connected localities.

The book and eBook will help widespread the Wikipedia project in the country, including those areas where internet connection is available but hard to come-by. We also plan events and activities to reach public in order to expand the visibility and potential contributors to the Wikimedia projects.

Special emphasis will be place on the fact that this is a volunteer work, done by common Wikipedia users, and invite the readers to become Wikipedia editors themselves.

The project is already under heavy work, and as of May 27, 2010 the electronic version of the book has been finished and most articles have been also recorded.

We expect to be able to send both the book and DVDs to print in June/July 2010.

Non-financial requirements[edit]

The project is being developed by volunteers ad honorem, what will keep the financial needs to a bare minimum. We plan nevertheless to relay on goverment and NGO for the distribution of the material across the country, as well as our own web site where all the material will also be available for download.

Fit to strategy[edit]

We believe this project covers several points of the Wikimedia strategic plan. Its stronger points are on "global dissemination" and "educational content generation", and all in the "local language".

Other benefits[edit]

We will improve the quality of the articles we are publishing, and provide with audio versions of them, and make it available to the public also as a link back to the Wikimedia projects.

We also expect to create laces with NGO and institutions connected with information and education that will hopefully open doors to future educational projects connected to Wikimedia.

Measures of success[edit]

We understand that it will be difficult to measure the reach out and success of the project. We are preparing for that purpose a survey that will be answered by snail-mail or e-mail; that can give us an idea of the number of institutions and people that were reached by the material.

Results of the survey will be included in the report, with statistical data in English.
