Goal[edit]

The overall purpose of this Wiki Loves Earth contest is to increase the amount of freely-licensed material related to Spanish and Portuguese protected natural sites in Wikimedia Commons, and improve the quality and quantity of Wikipedia articles about them, including illustrating the articles with the uploaded pictures. If the project is successful, more people will know not only about Wikipedia, but also about Wikimedia Commons and new users will be engaged in the projects. Additionally, the Wikimedia movement and the local chapters will gain visibility within the involved communities. Within this scope, we are asking funding to finance the cost of the prizes for the contest winners, as well as the award ceremony and the cost of promotion for the contest (web site and others).

Plan[edit]

This grant request has been written by Wikimedia Spain, but Wikimedia Portugal is also part of it. Instead of doing Wiki Loves Earth Spain, the Spanish chapter decided that it would be better to organize a contest for both countries in cooperation with Wikimedia Portugal.

This will be the first time Wikimedia Spain and Wikimedia Portugal work together in a project. Wikimedia Portugal is redoing its structure and this could be a great opportunity to start working in a concrete project with the support of another chapter. The impact in the region (Iberian Peninsula) will be higher if we work together and learning from the other team. It will be also the first time Wikimedia Spain and Wikimedia Portugal each organize a Wiki Loves Earth contest, although both have successfully organized Wiki Loves Monuments contests in the past. For the writing contest we hope more countries from Iberocoop will join us, to garner more participants.

Activities[edit]

Before the photo contest:

Preparation of directories of protected sites in Wikipedia, at least in the Spanish and Portuguese Wikipedias (annexes/lists). These should be ready in April.
Preparation of the websites for the photo contest, and the page in Wikimedia Commons. Both websites will be similar but in different languages (Spanish, Portuguese, English and hopefully also in other relevant languages like Catalan, Galician, etc. — at least the main information).
Looking for new partners for the contest and organizations to collaborate with
Preparation and promotion of a Flickr group, https://www.flickr.com/groups/wle2015/
Selection of the jury. The jury will have five members from different backgrounds (Wikimedia projects, photography and nature)
Send press release to media in Spain and Portugal.
Launch the photo contest in May.

Before the writing contest:

Preparation of the pages for the writing contest in Wikipedia (Spanish and Portuguese, but hopefully more languages will join too, and more countries).
Launch writing contest in June.

Before and during the contests:

Promote the contests online (on Wikipedia projects, social networks, blog, sending invitation to relevant organizations) and offline (during other activities of the chapters)

After the photo contest:

Transfer uploaded material from Flickr to Wikimedia Commons
Corrections, if needed, to uploaded material
Selection of top 10 pictures in Spain and Portugal, and winners of both the overall contest and the special categories
Nomination of winners for Spain and Portugal
Inform the media and spread the news about the winning pictures.
Using pictures from the photo contest in different projects, and categorizing them in Wikimedia Commons
Giving or sending awards, certificates and gifts to the winners and jury members (note: this activity needs financing from the Foundation, and it is crucial for the whole contest)
Award ceremony. It will be a joint award ceremony with Wiki Loves Monuments Spain 2015, to gain more impact and save money (note: this activity needs financing from the Foundation, and it is crucial for the whole contest)

After the writing contest:

Corrections, if needed, to uploaded material
Nomination of winners for Spain and Portugal
Giving or sending awards, certificates and gifts to the winners and jury members (note: this activity needs financing from the Foundation, and it is crucial for the whole contest)
Announce the results in different channels
Awards ceremony. The ceremony will take place also with Wiki Loves Monuments Spain 2015 winners to gain more impact and save money (note: this activity needs financing from the Foundation, and it is crucial for the whole contest)

Impact[edit]

Target readership[edit]

Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia in Spanish and Portuguese, and indirectly all projects using Wikimedia Commons media files.

Fit with strategy[edit]

What crucial thing will the project try to change or benefit in the Wikimedia movement? Please select the Wikimedia strategic priority(ies) that your project most directly aims to impact and explain how your project fits. Most projects fit all strategic priorities. However, we would like project managers to focus their efforts on impacting 1–2 strategic priorities. Examples of strategic priorities can be found here.

The project fits with the mission of Wikimedia because it produces new content (pictures, lists and articles) about an important category of human knowledge (nature). It is well known that through Wiki Loves Earth a lot of material for Wikimedia Commons is gathered, and this year we are also looking for an impact in Wikipedia.
This contest reaches many people who have never edited on Wikipedia or never uploaded a picture to Wikimedia Commons before, thanks to the banners and the news published in the media. Wikimedia gets an important promotion in the press and we gain a lot of new editors (although unfortunately it is also proven that not many stay for long, i.e. the retention quote is low).
Many pictures uploaded are of very good quality (especially from Flickr) and they improve the quality of articles where they are used. The same with the articles, when people improve them.
When people see that a group of volunteers can organize a successful contest with a small amount of money they trust in us. The funds are efficiently used, as they generate many pictures, participants and media mentions.
Every year we learn something new and improve our skills and projects.
We hope to retain the partner from Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM) and attract new ones.
An excellent opportunity for Wikimedia Spain and Wikimedia Portugal to work together and gain a higher impact in the region.

Measures of success[edit]

Please provide a list of both quantitative and qualitative criteria that will be used to determine how successful the project is. You will need to report on the success of the project according to these measures after the project is completed. See the PEG program resources for suggested measures of success.

Photo contest:
Amount of photos uploaded in the contest within Spain and Portugal: success is over 5,000 7,000 files (5,000 in Spain and 2,000 in Portugal).
Amount of single users participating in the contest: success is over 200.
Amount of articles in the Wikimedia projects using this material after 6 months: success is 100.
Amount of new users: success is over 20.
Amount of photos used on Wikimedia projects after 6 months: success is over 200
Amount of mentions in press or other web sites: success is over 20
Writing contest:
Amount of total participants: success is over 20
Amount of improved or new articles: success is over 150 250

Note: In addition to your project-specific measures of success, you will also be asked to report on some global metrics at the end of your final report. Please keep this in mind as you plan, and we'll support you as you begin your project.

Resources and risks[edit]

Resources[edit]

Wiki Loves Earth 2015 team:
From Wikimedia Spain: Poco a poco (organisation, web page), Millars (communication, organisation), Rodelar (listings), Kadellar (organisation, jury), Laura Fiorucci (listings), Montgomery (listings, jury), -jem- (bots, scripting), 19Tarrestnom65 (listings)
From Wikimedia Portugal: Beria, João Miguel Vasconcelos and Alchimista
Wikimedia Spain and Wikimedia Portugal organized several successful contests in the past. Wikimedia Portugal organized Wiki Loves Monuments in 2011 with more than 15,000 pictures Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2011 in Portugal, and Wikimedia Spain organized Wiki Loves Monuments in 2011 (Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2011 in Spain; 18,000 pictures), 2012 (Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2012 in Spain; near 40,000 pictures), 2013 (Grants:PEG/WM ES/Wiki Loves Monuments Spain 2013/Report; about 23,000 pictures and +400 users) and 2014 (grant (report not available yet); +23,000 pictures and +500 users).
In 2014 Wikimedia Spain organized a writing contest after Wiki Loves Monuments with 2079 articles edited, corresponding to approximately 1086 different Wikidata items in 37 languages, and 46 editors. Post on WMF blog. For the writing contest about natural protected spaces we are still talking with other Wikimedia chapters or groups, like Wikimedia Uruguay to organize the writing contest together on Spanish Wikipedia and gain a deeper impact.

Risks[edit]

Risks
Difficulty in recruiting new volunteers and increasing the participation from previous years.
Technical difficulties with pictures uploaded in Flickr.
Mitigating risks
More work with national medias and social networks, and with Wikipedia community and different associations with similar goals or interested in nature and photography, to encourage them to participate.
In advance commitment of participants with technical skills to contribute in the contest and start of all needed activities with sufficient time.
