Activities and lessons learned[edit]

Activities[edit]

Wikipedia User Group Nigeria (WUGN) celebrated the 15th anniversary of wikipedia in Nigeria . At first, the group intended to celebrate it at Goethe Institut. However, there was a change in program of Goethe Institut which led the group to organize the event at Fountain University Osogbo following a discussion with the management of the university. Our team arrived at the University on Thursday 14th January 2016, a day before the celebration. On the 15th of January 2016, which marked the birth of Wikipedia . Students and Acadmics staff gathered at Eti-Osa Hall . The event began with an opening prayer by the Vice chancellor of the university , professor Bashiru Ademola Raji who was present at the occasion. This was followed by a brief overview of the Wikipedia as online encyclopedia in the last fifteen years, its accomplishment, impact in education and its future in the next fifteen years. The other highlight of the day include cake cutting, socializing and entertainment. The event attracted huge number of attendees including students and academics staff.

Workshop[edit]

On the 16th of January 2016 marked the first workshop for students of fountain University .The aim of the workshop is to provide hands-on training for students of the institution, to acquaint the students with the basic knowledge of Wikipedia and how to be a contributor to the project. Over twenty students participated in the workshop.

Lessons learned[edit]

What worked well?
  • Good working relationship with the school management including the academic staff
  • Availability of training facilities except for the internet connectivity
  • Willingness of the students to participate in wikimedia project
What didn't work?
  • Internet Connectivity -- Poor internet connectivity is one of the challenges we faced during the workshop. We spent over 3 hrs resolving this problem until we switch to another network hub.
  • Rannge Block-- During the training session, we experienced a ranged block which affected the participants IP address. This was due to the fact that the participants were connected to the school main internet hub. The few ones that were able to edit made used of their mobile phone connections. The same issue persisted after the workshop. We contacted a checkuser to help in resolving this problem However, some were to edit while others gave up editing in the process.
  • Academic Calender-- The workshop clashed with the exams of the students which impeded the level of participation in the mentorship program organized hereafter.
  • Late disbursement of fund from WMF for the event.
What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
  • We will endeavor to identify the Internet Service Provider (ISP) with the strongest internet network connection in the target location before the event.
  • We will ensure to be conversant with the calendar of proposed host institution or organization before organizing any event.

Contest[edit]

The contest organized as part of the event added 121 Nigerian related articles to Wikipedia and one featured image of a Nigerian woman. 30 editors participated in the contest. This is the first contest organized by Wikimedia User group Nigeria.

Outcomes and impact[edit]

Outcomes[edit]

Provide the original project goal here.
  • To mark the 15th birthday of Wikipedia in Nigeria
  • To recruit long-term valuable editors
  • To create a long-term relationship with academic insttutions
  • Nigerian students and academics are not aware of the model of Wikipedia. They are not aware of the fact that articles on Wikipedia are written and edited by people like them. We aim to create awareness about the model of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.
Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 short paragraphs.

As proposed we were able to achieve our goals thus:

  • The event was marked as indicated in our original project goal.
  • Some of the long-term valuable editors recruited include:
  1. en:User:jaybakky
  2. en:User:Amunique
  3. en:User:Moyosteady13

The above mentioned editors are still active till date.

  • The success recorded from the event, we have been able to create a long-term relationship with the institution
  • The hosting of the event has been able to correct the impression that wikipedia are written by only experts. Also, we have been able to use the event to introduce the basic knowledge of Wikipedia to students and academics

Project metrics Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Wikipedia 15 Celebration: To establish a long term relationship with academic institution in Nigeria and to create awareness about Wikimedia projects and how contents get to Wikipedia. We were to establish a long term relationship with Fountain University, Osogbo,Osun State, where the event took place and we also organise workhop and edit-a-thorn with the students of the school. The institution agreed to support future Wikimedia projects/events in Nigeria.
To boost support for Wikimedia projects and the affiliate of the WMF, the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria With the success of this event, additional four tertiary Institutions had indicated their interest to partner with for Wikimedia projects in Nigeria.Namely, Yaba College of Technology, Lagos State University, Adekunle Ajasin University, and Moshood Abiola Polytechnic
To increase number of contributors to Wikipedia Three (3) active editors from Nigeria were added to Wikipedia We earlier proposed that at least 10 new editors will continue to edit at the end of the event, however with the challenges mentioned above only three are still editing till date.
To increase number of community members in Nigeria The Wikimedia User Grouped Nigeria has increase from five membership to over 30 members

across the country.

Global Metrics[edit]

We are trying to understand the overall outcomes of the work being funded across our grantees. In addition to the measures of success for your specific program (in above section), please use the table below to let us know how your project contributed to the Global Metrics. We know that not all projects will have results for each type of metric, so feel free to put "0" where necessary.

  1. Next to each required metric, list the actual outcome achieved through this project.
  2. Where necessary, explain the context behind your outcome. For example, if you were funded for an edit-a-thon which resulted in 0 new images, your explanation might be "This project focused solely on participation and articles written/improved, the goal was not to collect images."

For more information and a sample, see Global Metrics.
