Africa Wiki Women currently has 657 registered members, 81% female and 19% male, with the majority based in Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Cameroon, Tanzania, Rwanda, Kenya, Madagascar, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The project will prioritize sustaining and deepening engagement with members in these countries while expanding targeted outreach to Mali, Senegal, and Zimbabwe, where AWW currently has limited membership. This regional approach will allow us to strengthen existing communities while extending opportunities for women in countries that are currently underrepresented in our network.

Africa Wiki Women [1] is a Pan-African community working to address gender inequalities in Wikimedia by creating opportunities for African women to build skills, confidence, leadership capacity, and visibility in open knowledge spaces. In just over three years, the community has grown to more than 600 members across 20+ African countries and the diaspora, with women representing 74.3% of its membership. Through training, campaigns, and community-led initiatives, members contributed more than 19.41K Wikipedia articles, 10.44K Wikidata contributions, and 26.41K Wikimedia Commons uploads in 2025–2026. The community also uses digital platforms for outreach, storytelling, knowledge sharing, and engagement. 

In 2027, Africa Wiki Women will focus on strengthening and connecting its programs, expanding its reach, sustaining contributor engagement, and building women's skills and leadership within the Wikimedia movement. Our work will remain interconnected across programs, allowing each initiative to build on existing community networks, strengthen pathways for continued participation, and contribute to the long-term growth, visibility, and leadership of African women in open knowledge.

1. Leadership and Mentorship Development Program The Africa Wiki Women Leadership and Mentorship Program supports African women to grow into confident contributors and leaders within the Wikimedia movement by providing structured guidance, peer support, and leadership opportunities. The program connects emerging and experienced Wikimedians in a safe and inclusive learning environment where participants strengthen technical skills, develop leadership capacities, and navigate pathways for sustained engagement. Through one-on-one and group mentorship, participants gain practical experience, build confidence, and deepen their understanding of Wikimedia projects and community governance. The program also encourages collaborative learning and knowledge sharing, creating a culture where mentees are empowered to take initiative, lead activities, and support new contributors in their own communities. 2. Africa Wiki Women Newbie Community Program The Africa Wiki Women Newbie Community is a structured onboarding and mentorship program created to support new and early contributors as they begin their journey within the Wikimedia movement. The program emerged in response to the growing number of new participants joining Africa Wiki Women and the need for dedicated onboarding and continued support.

The program provides guided learning pathways, practical resources, and peer support to help participants build confidence, acquire essential editing skills across Wikimedia projects, and transition into active, long-term contributors. The Newbie Community prioritizes retention and sustained participation, particularly among women and allies. The program also emphasizes intentional tracking of participant growth and impact, enabling continuous learning, improvement, and evidence-based reporting while strengthening the sustainability of African Wikimedia communities. Moving forward, Africa Wiki Women will strengthen the program by developing structured newbie courses and tailored lessons on WikiLearn to provide participants with accessible and sustained learning opportunities.

3. Africa Wiki Women Skill-Up & EditHer Africa Program The Africa Wiki Women Skill-Up & EditHer Africa Program is an integrated capacity-building and contribution program designed to strengthen the technical, organizational, and leadership capacities of African women while creating practical pathways to apply these skills through meaningful contributions to Wikimedia projects.The program connects learning with contribution by combining interactive workshops, practical editing sessions, office hours, thematic campaigns, peer learning, and continued mentorship. Participants develop skills in Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons editing, digital skills, project and campaign management, and accessing scholarships and other opportunities. They then apply these skills through thematic campaigns focused on improving the visibility and representation of African women and other underrepresented knowledge. The program also provides ongoing guidance, shared resources, peer support, and recognition of participants’ contributions, helping build confidence, sustain engagement, and support contributor retention. To date, Skill-Up has engaged 1,061 participants from more than 20 African countries, including contributors from the diaspora, with an average attendance of 70 participants per session. The program has covered Wikimedia editing, digital skills development, project and campaign management, and scholarship and opportunity pathways. EditHer Africa has provided a practical contribution pathway, with participants contributing to the creation, improvement, and translation of more than 1,200 Wikipedia articles and Wikidata items, as well as uploading more than 100 images to Wikimedia Commons. The campaign has engaged more than 345 participants from countries including Nigeria, Uganda, Madagascar, Benin, Botswana, Tanzania, Ghana, and Cameroon.

4. On-Wiki Skills Mentorship Program The On-Wiki Skills Mentorship Program was launched to address the persistent underrepresentation of African women editors across Wikimedia projects. Africa Wiki Women's experience and research show that this gap is not due to a lack of interest, but is influenced by structural barriers, including limited access to sustained mentorship, the absence of safe and supportive learning spaces, and a shortage of experienced mentors able to provide consistent guidance.The program provides structured mentorship and practical support to women who want to deepen their technical skills and become more active contributors across Wikimedia projects. Africa Wiki Women has also received requests from multiple affiliates seeking structured mentorship support for their women members. The mentorship model combines live virtual training sessions with one-on-one coaching. It is delivered in both English and French, with separate language cohorts to support accessibility and meaningful engagement. Participants complete structured assignments and practical editing exercises, with performance metrics used to track skill development and on-wiki contributions. In the next phase, Africa Wiki Women will strengthen the curriculum, deepen mentor support systems, improve tracking of long-term editor retention, and formalize pathways for mentees to transition into future mentors. The goal is not only to increase women's participation but also to establish a sustainable mentorship pipeline that strengthens leadership capacity within African Wikimedia communities.

5. Africa Wiki Women Podcast Series The Africa Wiki Women Podcast Series provides a platform for advocacy, storytelling, and celebration by highlighting the journeys, contributions, and experiences of African women within the Wikimedia movement. The podcast serves as both an outreach and advocacy tool, amplifying women's voices, showcasing role models, and inspiring new and emerging contributors across the continent. It also creates a space for knowledge sharing and community connection beyond traditional Wikimedia activities. To date, the series has released 11 episodes featuring women from 10 different African countries. The podcast will continue to provide opportunities to highlight women's experiences, share lessons from the movement, showcase community achievements, and encourage more women to participate in open knowledge.

6. Partnerships and Collaborations At Africa Wiki Women Africa Wiki Women (AWW) considers partnerships essential to expanding our reach, strengthening programmes, sharing expertise, mobilising resources, and creating supportive pathways for women to participate and lead in the Wikimedia movement. We have strengthened our regional engagement with the Wikimedia Foundation’s Sub-Saharan Africa team and are also drawing on strategic guidance from Felix Nartey, Africa Partnership Manager, to develop a more structured and sustainable partnership approach. In 2026, AWW renewed and extended its Memorandum of Understanding with Shangazi Power and strengthened collaborations with women-led organisations, Wikimedia affiliates, and civil society groups, including Girls’ Voice Initiative, Africa Wikimedia User Group DRC, Wikimedia Uganda, Wikimedia South Sudan, Wikimedia Rwanda, Senior Citizens Network, Women for Sustainability Africa, and Open Knowledge Development Initiative. These collaborations have supported activities such as the EditHer Africa campaign and Celebrate African Women during International Women’s Day 2026, helping us reach women, build skills, increase participation, and create opportunities for mentorship and contribution to Wikimedia projects. We are also currently exploring new collaborations with ForumCIV Liberia, Allternet Living Lab, Wikimedia Congo, Meliore Foundation, and the Global Index on Responsible AI (GRAIA). These discussions focus on areas including women’s leadership, gender representation in Wikimedia, community knowledge, digital inclusion, and responsible AI. Looking ahead, AWW will focus on strengthening existing relationships, developing promising partnerships into meaningful collaborations, and diversifying our network to include organisations such as AWDF, FAWE, Womankind Worldwide, Women in Tech Africa, UN Women, Global Fund for Women, IWMF, African Feminist Forum, and African Women in Media. Our goal is to build long-term partnerships that expand women’s participation, leadership, visibility, skills, and access to open knowledge across Africa.

9.3.2. Which gender and inclusion gap does your work address, and who is it for?

Our work addresses interconnected gender gaps in Wikimedia content, participation, leadership, and retention, with a focus on increasing the representation of African women and strengthening their participation in the Wikimedia movement. Feedback from AWW members consistently highlights the need for skills development, mentorship, networking, leadership opportunities, and greater opportunities to contribute to content about African women. The programme is primarily for women and women-aligned contributors in the Africa Wiki Women community across Africa, including new, early-career, and experienced contributors. We will focus on Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons, supporting members to create, improve, and translate content about African women while developing the skills and confidence needed for sustained participation. Our multilingual focus will prioritise languages spoken by our members, including English, French, Swahili, Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, Fulfulde, Pidgin, and Luganda. By combining content development with skills building, mentorship, leadership development, and community support, we aim to address both the underrepresentation of African women and the barriers that limit women's participation and progression within Wikimedia.

9.3.3. What activities will you use to address this gap, and how will you make participation safe and sustainable?

We will address these gaps through a connected pathway of skills development, content campaigns, onboarding, mentorship, leadership development, and ongoing community support.We will begin with AWW Skill-Up Workshops, providing practical training in Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, essential wiki skills, and soft skills. Participants will then apply these skills through the Edither Africa Contest, a content campaign focused on creating and improving content about African women across Wikipedia and its sister projects. Together, these activities will build women's editing capacity while directly addressing gender gaps in Wikimedia content.

To support continued participation, the Africa Wiki Women Newbie Community Program will provide onboarding and mentorship for new and early-career contributors. The Africa Wiki Women Leadership and Mentorship Program will run two leadership mentorship cohorts, while the On-Wiki Skills Program will provide three cohorts of practical on-wiki mentorship. These pathways will help participants progress from learning and contributing to taking on leadership and mentoring roles.

Community roundtables, the Wiki Women Voices Podcast, and the Year in Review meeting will provide spaces for networking, knowledge sharing, reflection, and continued community engagement. Participation will be voluntary, and we will protect privacy by collecting only necessary information and seeking consent before sharing participants' personal stories, photographs, recordings, or other identifiable information. Experienced community members and allies will support participants as mentors and facilitators where appropriate. Regular feedback, community reviews, and evaluation will help us identify areas for improvement, document learning and impact, and strengthen the programmes beyond one-off events. This approach creates sustained pathways for women to learn, contribute, connect, lead, and mentor others within the Wikimedia movement.

9.3.4. How much of your budget will support gender and inclusion work, and how will you measure progress?

54% (18,000 USD) of the project budget will be dedicated to advancing gender equity and inclusion, as gender and inclusion are central to the design and purpose of all project activities. We will measure progress through both quantitative and qualitative indicators, including the participation and engagement of women and other underrepresented groups; the number of new and retained editors and organizers; participation in our 27 online and in-person skill-building activities; the 20 mentees matched with mentors; and the 10 fellows supported through the Africa Wiki Women Leadership and Mentorship Fellowship. We will also track the creation and improvement of Wikimedia content, participation in leadership and mentorship opportunities, partnerships secured, and feedback from participants to assess whether the project is increasing access, skills, confidence, leadership opportunities, and sustained participation in the Wikimedia movement. Our overall targets include 1,000 participants, 650 editors (including 250 new and 400 retained editors), 13 organizers, 4 new organizers, 20 mentorship pairings, and 10 leadership fellows. These indicators will help us assess both the reach of the project and its longer-term contribution to a more diverse and inclusive Wikimedia community.

Program Coordinator (Part-Time Contract): Leads the planning, implementation, monitoring, and coordination of Africa Wiki Women’s programs. The Program Coordinator ensures that activities are delivered efficiently, on schedule, and in alignment with the organization’s strategic objectives. The role also tracks program outcomes, coordinates implementation across activities, and supports learning and continuous improvement.

Communications and Logistics Officer (Part-Time Contract): Leads communications, outreach, and logistical coordination across Africa Wiki Women’s activities. The role supports visibility and engagement with participants, partners, and the wider Wikimedia community; coordinates event logistics; and ensures timely communication before, during, and after program activities.

Administrative Coordinator (Part-Time Contract): Provides essential administrative and operational support to Africa Wiki Women. Responsibilities include documentation, scheduling, record keeping, internal coordination, and supporting organizational processes. The role helps ensure that administrative systems run efficiently and that the wider team has the operational support needed to deliver programs effectively. We are developing or strengthening strategic collaborations with Wikimedia Congo, focused on women’s mentorship, skills development and community engagement; Wiki Loves Women, which contributed to the launch of Wiki Àrà-Ọ̀tọ̀ 2026 to improve the representation of African women on Wikidata; Allternet Living Labs, through the “Visible Regenerative Communities” pilot connecting women contributors with community-generated knowledge; ForumCiv, linking our Wikimedia expertise with rural women’s leadership and rights initiatives; and the Melliore Foundation’s Flamma Project, exploring training for women working on gender equality issues to improve gender-related content on Wikipedia. AWW also has an established history of collaboration with Lamu Women Alliance, Girls’ Voice Initiative, Open Inclusive Initiative, Women for Sustainability Africa, Maestro Africa Solutions, Shangazi Power, Wikimedia user groups in Nigeria and Uganda, and the University of Ghana, supporting outreach, skills development, mentorship, publicity, and Wikimedia contributions. Through these partnerships, we will expand our reach beyond existing Wikimedia communities and contribute to our targets. We are also drawing on strategic guidance from Felix Nartey, Wikimedia Foundation Partnership Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa, to strengthen our partnership approach and build more sustainable, impact-driven relationships.

Compared with the current year, Africa Wiki Women will reduce its staffing structure and operate with a leaner part-time team in response to constrained funding and the inability to secure a renewal of its General Support Fund for the second half of 2026. This adjustment is necessary to align staffing costs with the resources currently available and to ensure the organization can continue operating sustainably.

Despite this reduction in staffing capacity, Africa Wiki Women’s community continues to grow, increasing the demand for programs, coordination, communications, and administrative support. The proposed three part-time contractor roles therefore represent a streamlined structure designed to retain essential organizational capacity while keeping costs manageable. The organization will prioritize core functions and program delivery while continuing to explore additional funding and partnerships to rebuild capacity as resources allow.
