Part 1: Understanding your work

[edit]

Per the recent update on the Wikimedia Foundation Affiliates Strategy process, Wikimedia Affiliates that are General Support Fund grantees will fulfill their affiliate reporting requirements through their final or yearly grantee report.

If you are a Wikimedia Affiliate, you will use this form for your affiliate reporting and to address the affiliate health criteria. You do not need to submit a separate report to AffCom. Follow the guidance in the green boxes to report on how you met the corresponding affiliate health criteria.

If you are not a Wikimedia Affiliate, aligning your responses with the affiliate criteria is optional and not required.

1. Please share to what extent your programs, approaches, and strategies contributed to addressing the challenges you shared in your proposal. If they did not contribute as you believed they would, please share what obstacles you faced and what, if anything, you learned from them? (required)

For affiliates, use this space (Question 1.) to address Affiliate Health Criterion 1.1 (Goal delivery). Describe how you actively delivered on mission goals, e.g. content creation.

Administrative & Community Building - Our strategic approach in 2024 focussed on strengthening and formalizing some administrative processes such as developing contracts for paid roles, developing campaign organizer briefs, and enhanced documentation.

We also hosted regular community meet-ups and training aimed at enhancing community engagement and on wiki skills for both existing editors and newcomers.

Improved in the quality of contributions - We noted significant improvement in the quality of contributions made vis-a-vis quantity, which led to satisfaction and motivation among editors as their contributions were not reverted or deleted by wiki functionaries.

This was made possible by the regular engagement during campaigns that encouraged editors to cross-check and collaborate in reviewing sandbox drafts during campaigns such as Afrocine/months of African Cinema and wiki quotes.

Newcomers were also excited about wiki quotes.

Wikipedia and Wiki Commons editing basics - Our focus on Wikipedia and Wiki Commons editing basics that covered policies in all our trainings also contributed a great deal in enhancing the quality of contributions and enhancing capacity for organizers.

Stakeholder Workshops - Our focus on hosting workshops with relevant external stakeholders in key global campaigns such as Wiki for Human Rights and Art & Feminism also proved productive in enhancing advocacy about our movement, our community and identifying avenues of collaboration in enhancing knowledge and content gaps on the topics at hand both at the community level. This year we engaged Community based organizastions working in the areas of gender,  environment, human rights and climate change.

2. Is there a plan to build on the key successes you had? If yes, please describe the plan and if no, please share the limitations to do so. For instance, did the activities lead to any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future? (required)

Yes, we plan to build on things that worked well and learn to enhance our activities in 2025.

Advocacy work - Our advocacy work through the workshop we conducted with external stakeholders is one of the areas we saw as a great opportunity to grow our community and contributions. We plan to continue engaging and collaborating with external thematic organizations and join their networks. This will help in our outreach and community growth.

We plan to also send representatives to attend some of the external events organized by like-minded organizations and leverage on these to host on-wiki trainings.

We also plan to activate a new community in an additional county, possibly Machakos County as resolved in our 2024 AGM.

3. Please provide a link to reports that detail the activities that took place in the last year. This can include an annual report, Meta pages, and websites. If there are no links available, briefly describe the implemented activities and programs below or upload any files. (required)

For affiliates, use this space (Question 3.) to address Affiliate Health Criteria 2.1 (Affiliate health & resilience), 4.1 (Internal engagement), 4.2 (Community connection), and 4.3 (Partnerships and collaboration):

  • Describe your activities engaging new users, new members for your decision-making body(ies), and developing leaders and organizers (2.1).
  • Describe your activities creating or hosting spaces to encourage greater collaboration and engagement among your members (4.1).
  • Describe how you engage with the contributing community that you serve and/or support (4.2).
  • Describe your partnerships with other affiliates or with non-Wikimedia entities (4.3).

[1]

  • Describe your activities engaging new users, new members for your decision-making body(ies), and developing leaders and organizers (2.1).
  • All our events have an allocation for newcomers and we take time to host separate trainings for them.
  • We activated a community at Pwani University, in Kilifi County, trained and continue to mentor a community organizer to lead in the coordination of activities on that end.
  • Hosted 3 capacity-building workshops that trained filmmakers, students and youth in civil society organizations on how to contribute to Wikipedia.
  • Onboarded 6 newcomers in our community and involved them in our AGM
  • Trained 3 new community members in campaign organizing. Campaign organizers are considered as an additional layer of leadership in the UG and are involved in strategy, project budgeting and reporting.
  • Describe your activities creating or hosting spaces to encourage greater collaboration and engagement among your members (4.1).
  • Hosted two in-person community meetings and a monthly virtual meet-up to maintain consistent engagement, collaboration and problem-solving
  • We also encourage a culture of knowledge exchange and article review during edit-a-thons to help improve on quality of contributions.
  • Each campaign Lead is also required to work with a Co-organizer, as part of a mentorship approach aimed at training more organizers. In 2025; the Teams will switch roles; with the co-leads in 2024 taking up Lead Roles to gauge their capacities.
  • Describe how you engage with the contributing community that you serve and/or support (4.2).
  • Through regular/monthly meet-ups, email  and WhatsApp group
  • Describe your partnerships with other affiliates or with non-Wikimedia entities (4.3).
  • We are part of EARTHub, and continue to work and engage closely with other Wikimedians including West and South African communities.
  • 3 of our community members supported Wikimedia ZA in organizing Wiki Indaba 2024 in programming, scholarships and Communications., which is a good illustration of leadership capacities, team work and regional collaboration.

If yes, please attach/provide information on the results (e.g. community surveys, stories, impact booklets/reports, interviews with partner institutions, etc). Did you collect other impact-specific data? (required)

For affiliates, the response to Question 5. also partially addresses Affiliate Health Criteria 4.1 (Internal Engagement), 4.2 (Community Connection), or 4.3 (Partnerships & collaboration), where applicable.

Yes, we always after each event give participants room to provide feedback of the experience and share recommendations for future events; most feedback is verbalized and captured in our documentation or video recordings; some of which has been shared on in our social media page and respective project reports shared.

After each campaign, organizers also do a retro to review outcomes and things that worked or didn't work well.

We also engage members during the AGM for additional feedback and recommendations on general matters.

We always ensure that we speak about community guidelines including the UCOC and the friendly space policy in all our community events especially those with new commers. This aware is also part of our new commers onboarding resources. This has helped in protecting our members against admin blocks.

We also have an internal community guidelines ( [5])  that we adopted to enhance cohesion, collaboration and members responsibilities and expectations. This has helped the community to avoid conflicts and maintain good community relations for. One of greatest achievement as a community is members retention.

Decision making:- We have since 2023, hosted an AGM where members get to discuss and deliberate key issues about the community, review projects, funding and share feedback on areas that needs improvement. We have also created a culture of peer learning where experienced organizers  work with less experienced volunteers as part of growing the number of community organizers.
