Main proposal

[edit]
1. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be a title for the Meta-Wiki page. (required)
Art+Feminism, 2026-2028
2. Do you want to apply for the multi-year base funding for 3 years? (required) (only for returning applicants)
Yes
2.1. Provide a brief overview of Year 2 and Year 3 of the proposed plan and how this relates to the current proposal and your strategic plan? (required)

The vision for Art+Feminism is to center community support, feminist data activism, and sustainable partnerships by focusing on four interconnected pillars: (1) Community Retention and Growth: Foster engagement beyond traditional metrics, reactivate former organizers, and build inclusive networks across global Wikimedia, GLAM, and feminist communities. (2) Education: Shift emphasis from Wikipedia to Wikidata as a key feminist tool. Develop training and engagement opportunities that frame structured data as vital for addressing AI bias and digital knowledge equity. (3) Partnerships: Cultivate new collaborations with GLAM institutions, visual artists, researchers, and educators. Reimagine Art+Feminism’s programming—like its Conversation Series and Virtual Editing Tables—as connective platforms across sectors. (4) Organizational Sustainability: Align leadership and staffing structures with strategic needs, build trust internally, establish a succession plan, and strengthen fundraising efforts through diversified strategies and clearer communication of impact.

All of this cannot be fully realized in one calendar year, but we’re excited about the opportunities of multi-year funding to be able to help us adapt and these strategic shifts in a climate where information activism is being weaponized. This multi-year plan sets the stage for Art+Feminism to reassert and to grow itself as a vital, innovative player in the intersection of open knowledge, feminism, and technology. It positions the organization to navigate an evolving landscape while staying grounded in its values of equity, community, and radical inclusion.

11. Describe your team. (required)

Board of Directors (International; volunteers) The Board of Directors of Art+Feminism is the governing body of the organization responsible for sustaining the viability and growth of the organization. In line with the organization’s practice, the Board makes all decisions collectively, transparently, and by an-agreed upon consensus-based approach.

Staff (US-based; salary) Executive Director (full-time): shepherds the organization to set the strategic vision and execute the annual plan, reporting to the Board of Directors. Communications Associate (full-time): shapes and shares the story of Art+Feminism. It is a critical role both externally and internally to facilitate communication and messaging within and about the Art+Feminism community. Wiki and Administrative Assistant (part-time): provides general support to the administrative and development needs of Art+Feminism’s day-to-day operations and on Wiki sites as well as independently managing elements of related programming.

Leadership Team Advisers (international; contractors) Leadership Team Advisers support the Executive Director in strategic planning in developing actions that ensure the campaign is aligned with the plan, with specific duties supporting the annual campaign and to contribute and collaborate with the staff and board for the sustainability of the organization.

Network Organizers (international; contractors) Network organizers are experienced and active Art+Feminism event organizers that develop independent projects within their community in the spirit of the Art+Feminism campaign, mission and values.

Event Organizers (global: volunteers) Global community of individuals who organize their own Art+Feminism events inspired by the annual campaign and use Art+Feminism guides, resources, and/or microfunding to host their own event in their community.

Expertise Specific Third Party (as needed; consultants) For specific tasks or training, Art+Feminism works with third-party consultants for their expertise to help move the mission of the organization forward in an efficient manner. Types of consultants include language interpretation and translation (rather than relying on multi-lingual community members), formal strategic planning, annual retreat facilitation, and website maintenance. In the past we’ve also worked with specific consultants around things like restorative justice, anti-racist hiring practices, and disability and accessibility training.

12. Will you be working with any internal (Wikimedia) or external partners? Describe the characteristics of these partnerships and bring a few examples of the most significant partnerships. (required)

Collaboration is such a key tenant of the work we do at Art+Feminism. We are excited to continue to build on our existing community of partners internally and externally.

A key external partner we wish to establish, pending funding, is a relationship with ArtsPool. ArtsPool offers a range of services, including bookkeeping, accounting, budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and audit preparation. By transferring complex financial responsibilities from our Executive Director to experts in these areas, we can alleviate their workload and redirect resources toward the mission of the organization. We see this as a key step in sustainability of the organization. At Art+Feminism, we prioritize partnerships that align with our values. ArtsPool’s member-owned, cooperative model mirrors our collaborative, equity-driven ethos. This partnership will not only enhance our financial stability but also connect us with a wider network of arts organizations for knowledge sharing, collaboration, and growth.

Additionally, we’re hopeful that with funding through this multi-year grant, that in year 2 of 3 we will be able to engage with a third party consultant to facilitate formal strategic planning. As noted in our programming outline under question 10, we hope to develop the RFP next summer, so that we’re able to start the process in 2027. We had a great experience with Wayfinding Partners (https://www.wayfindingpartners.com/) for our last strategic plan and would like to ask them (as well as some other organizations) for proposals. This component is critical to one of the metrics that we are proposing for our organization.

Internally, two key communities have been critical for Art+Feminism. First is the Executive Directors group that brings together EDs from all over the world in regular communication via virtual meetings, Signal chats, and annually in-person. It’s a tremendous space for peer learning and community.

The other consistent source of partnership and community is through what we’ve been referring to internally as the Informal Feminist Coalition that includes members from Art+Feminism, Whose Knowledge?, Wiki Editoras, Wiki LGBT+, Black Lunch Table, and AfroCrowd. We hold bi-monthly optional meetings with the goal of not creating more work, but as a space for sharing and community building.

13. In what ways do you think your proposal most contributes to the Movement Strategy 2030 recommendations. Select all that apply. (required)
Increase the Sustainability of Our Movement, Provide for Safety and Inclusion, Ensure Equity in Decision-making, Invest in Skills and Leadership Development, Identify Topics for Impact

Description for Wikimedia projects contributions metrics. (optional)

Other Metrics

[edit]
15. Do you have other quantitative and qualitative targets for your project (other metrics)? (required)
Yes
Other Metrics Description Target
Board Engagement In our first strategic plan, we set goals to expand the board beyond the U.S. requirement of three members and to include members outside the U.S. to better reflect our global community. Building on that success, we aim to engage board members in annual in-kind contributions of time or expertise to advance our work—for example, a past member led internal workshops on consensus building. Acknowledging that outside factors may affect individual capacity, our goal is for 70% of board members to contribute annually. 5
Strategic Planning As our first formal strategic plan is nearing completion, if funding allows us, Art+Feminism would like to engage in another formal strategic planning session with a third party consultant to help us frame the next several years of Art+Feminism. The goal would be to generate and circulate an RFP in 2026 and then work with a consultant in 2027 to generate a strategic plan that builds on our existing body of work and pushes the organization further for the next 3-5 years. 1
Network Organizers In 2025, we have one Network Organizer. In 2026, we will add three veteran Art+Feminism community members, bringing the total to four. We will maintain regular conversations with them and create opportunities for peer connection. By May 2026, we will gather feedback from all four participants to assess their needs and determine whether, and in what ways, the program should expand. 4
Community Stories and Engagement Noting that edit counts are only one measure of engagement, we will capture and share at least 1 story per quarter from our global community each year as a way to celebrate, acknowledge, and build community. These stories will be shared through vehicles such as our mailing list, website, social media, and Diff. 4

19.3. Describe any staff or contractor changes compared to the current year / ongoing General Support Fund if any. (required only for returning grantees)
The biggest change is sunsetting the Regional Ambassador Program. As noted in the document linked above, the Regional Ambassador role has been critical in helping establish what Art+Feminism is today, but to meet the moment, we have sunset the Regional Ambassador program, shifting the administrative inbox work of the role to the day-to-day operations of the Art+Feminism staff to help ensure consistency and efficacy. This also resulted in the layoff of the Program Director role where the majority of the role was managing this program.

Additionally, in the spirit of equity, our strategy for this coming year includes the introduction of pay bands for staff, pending budget and grant approval. Bands are established and will be reviewed each year by the board of directors to make any adjustments, but employees within the same band will receive equal compensation with no negotiation. Informed by the practice at Fractured Atlas, “This also means that we don’t negotiate compensation for new or current employees. The negotiation process can introduce bias and often ends with pay inequity, especially for marginalized people.” More specifically, this change reduces the current Executive Director salary and removes a lot of the accounting responsibilities from their job description as that work transitions to ArtsPool in further efforts of sustainability for the organization.

20. Please provide an overview of your overall budget categories in your local currency. The budget breakdown should include only the amount requested with this General Support Fund (required).

Programmatic costs 78492.65 USD
