Part 1: Understanding your work

[edit]

Per the recent update on the Wikimedia Foundation Affiliates Strategy process, Wikimedia Affiliates that are General Support Fund grantees will fulfill their affiliate reporting requirements through their final or yearly grantee report.

If you are a Wikimedia Affiliate, you will use this form for your affiliate reporting and to address the affiliate health criteria. You do not need to submit a separate report to AffCom. Follow the guidance in the green boxes to report on how you met the corresponding affiliate health criteria.

If you are not a Wikimedia Affiliate, aligning your responses with the affiliate criteria is optional and not required.

1. Please share to what extent your programs, approaches, and strategies contributed to addressing the challenges you shared in your proposal. If they did not contribute as you believed they would, please share what obstacles you faced and what, if anything, you learned from them? (required)

For affiliates, use this space (Question 1.) to address Affiliate Health Criterion 1.1 (Goal delivery). Describe how you actively delivered on mission goals, e.g. content creation.

The 7th phase of the Wiki Loves Butterfly program consisted of field documentations, mass awareness initiatives with college students and school outreach projects. During this phase, 60 field documentations have been conducted across 32 districts of 7 different states of the north-eastern and eastern part of India. The districts covered are listed below:

  • Assam - Kamrup district, Kamrup Metropolitan district, Kokrajhar district, Tinsukia district, Dibrugarh district, Barpeta district
  • Arunachal Pradesh - Lohit district and Changlang district
  • Mizoram - Champhai district, Saitual district, Khawzawl district, Aizawl district, Mamit district
  • Nagaland - Phek district and Kohima district
  • Sikkim - Mangan district, Gyalshing district, West Sikkim district and Gangtok district
  • Odisha - Balasore District and Mayurbhanj district
  • West Bengal - Nadia District, Bankura district, Hooghly district, Purulia district, Alipurduar district, Jhargram district, Kalimpong District, South 24 Paraganas district, Paschim Bardhaman district, Paschim Medinipur district and Jalpaiguri district

Wiki Loves Butterfly (WLB) has now expanded its scope to include Bhutan. To pursue this vision, the WLB team has conducted a pilot project in Royal Manas National Park, Panbang area of Bhutan marking an important step in regional butterfly conservation.

These field studies resulted in the upload of 4,934 images of various butterfly species found in these regions by 34 contributors. Among these images, 830 have been recognized as Quality Images, 45 as Valued Images, and 22 as Featured Images on the Wikimedia Commons. These images will not only serve as a valuable resource for scientific research but also help in public awareness and education through Wikimedia projects.

Here are the few highlights of this project.

=== Notable discovery ===

The WLB team members Atanu Bose, Mahesh Baruah, Abhishek Dutta Chaudhury and Anitava Roy successfully photographed Neptis philyra (Long-streak Sailor) at Tale Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh, in June 2023, which marked the first-ever recorded sighting of this species in India. The finding was published as a scholarly article in the scientific journal Tropical Lepidoptera Research on April 5, 2024.Bose, Atanu; Baruah, Mahesh; Choudhury, Abhishek Dutta; Roy, Anitava; Karmakar, Tarun (5 April 2024). Awareness and Outreach Initiatives

[edit]

The team had organized five butterfly and nature photo walks to promote biodiversity awareness and conservation efforts and free knowledge movements in West Bengal and Assam in collaboration with an biodiversity organization in Assam named [[2] "Wild Feathers"] Check |url= scheme (help). , a few amateur biodiversity groups in West Bengal like Biodiversity of Rabindra Sarobar and IISER Kolkata Nature Club to promote awareness and appreciation of biodiversity.

A butterfly and nature photo walk was organized in Lakhimpur, Assam, with the participation of 60 students from North Lakhimpur University, Madhabdev University and Chaiduar College. This initiative provided students with hands-on experience in butterfly documentation and how to upload images on Wikimedia Commons. Additionally a school outreach programme was conducted in collaboration with Dr. Ashima Chatterjee (Kalyani) Vigyan Sabha Group, a group affiliated with science awareness organization "Paschimbanga Vigyan Mancha". ,. This program engaged 200 students from the ninth and tenth standards of [[3] Springdale High School], Kalyani, West Bengal, fostering interest in butterfly conservation and environmental awareness.

Online sessions

[edit]

Two online sessions Tracing Wings: The Journey of Judhajit Dasgupta and the Legacy of Butterflies in West Bengal and Kaleidoscope of Colors were organized in September 2024 as part of the Big Butterfly Month observance in India. These sessions featured Mr. Judhajit Dasgupta, a renowned author specialised to butterflies and Mr. Atanu Bose, highlighting their insights and contributions to butterfly conservation. The events saw participation from more than 80 attendees, reflecting strong engagement and interest in the subject.

National-level butterfly meets

[edit]

The team has also co-organized and participated in three national-level butterfly meets held in Upper Siang district and Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh and Kaziranga National Park of Assam. These events were conducted in collaboration with prominent butterfly organizations from across India and the regional forest department, fostering knowledge exchange and conservation efforts.

The success of our project was significantly strengthened by a strong collaborative rapport with local butterfly enthusiasts, nature lovers, forest officials, and guides. Regular sharing of weather reports, optimized transportation routes, and efficient field strategies helped minimize the loss of valuable field days and maximized our fieldwork productivity. Their active involvement and cordial guidance not only ensured safety and security but also energized the team, enhancing documentation prospects.

The strategic plans for the project were effectively executed, largely due to this collaborative approach. Team members demonstrated strong understanding, mutual support, and commitment to their assigned tasks, ensuring smooth operations. This synergy facilitated efficient strategy implementation, innovative field techniques, improved documentation, and enriched data collection. Furthermore, outreach efforts were strengthened through mass awareness campaigns. Moreover photo walks, nature study workshops with school children, and co-organizing national-level butterfly meets played a crucial role in attracting new volunteers and Wikipedia editors. These initiatives have not only sustained volunteer participation but also promise continued growth in the future.

2. Is there a plan to build on the key successes you had? If yes, please describe the plan and if no, please share the limitations to do so. For instance, did the activities lead to any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future? (required)

Through our long-standing association with the world of butterflies via the WLB project, our focus has naturally evolved to include new priorities and goals. While we have extensively worked on butterfly taxonomy, species and subspecies identification, behavioral studies, and habitat orientation, we now recognize a pressing need to broaden our efforts.

Beyond scientific documentation, we are increasingly committed to raising awareness about the vital role of butterflies in our ecosystem. Our mission now extends to grassroots-level education, inspiring and mentoring the general public about the urgency of butterfly conservation.

Butterfly populations are in alarming decline worldwide due to escalating pollution, rapid industrialization, and urban expansion—factors that have led to significant forest loss and habitat destruction. This deterioration poses a severe threat to our ecosystem, emphasizing the need for immediate, collective action. Conservation efforts must include habitat restoration, the creation of butterfly-friendly spaces, and the establishment of small butterfly gardens in individual homes, community spaces, and even rooftops. To promote this cause, our social media campaigns actively inspire and motivate people—especially school children and college students—to participate in photowalks, nature study sessions, and butterfly workshops.

We are also brainstorming to display our observations from the last 9 years in an interactive dashboard, which we are intending to develop in our next plan. That will reflect the geographical and temporal distribution of the butterflies and help promote the activity of the project among nature conservationists.
