The Global WikiEducation Initiative (GWEI) is an education-focused movement dedicated to integrating Wikimedia projects and open knowledge resources into both formal and informal education systems in Tanzania. We work to bridge the gap between open knowledge and classroom learning by creating, adapting, and delivering innovative educational programs in schools, teacher training centers, and community learning spaces.
Educational Access and Equity: Expand access to Wikimedia projects in educational settings especially in underserved and offline communities by integrating tools like Kiwix and child-friendly resources like Klexikon.
Capacity Building and Knowledge Sharing: Strengthen the skills and capacities of educators, students, and institutional partners to engage with and contribute to Wikimedia projects as part of formal and informal learning. Localized Content Creation and Curriculum Integration: Promote the creation, translation, and contextualization of educational content in local languages, aligned with national curricula, to ensure relevance, inclusivity, and long-term educational value.
Sustainability and Global Partnerships: Develop strong regional networks, partnerships with education stakeholders, and sustainable governance and funding models to scale and sustain education-focused Wikimedia programs.
In alignment with our strategic plan, the Global WikiEducation Initiative (GWEI) will focus all activities on achieving its core strategic objectives: expanding equitable access to Wikimedia in education, building capacities among educators and learners, supporting localized content creation aligned with curricula, and strengthening sustainable partnerships and infrastructure. These efforts are designed to ensure the long-term growth, relevance, and global impact of Wikimedia in education, empowering communities to contribute to and benefit from open knowledge.
Community Growth and Development Wiki4School Mentorship Program: is a mentorship program that connects experienced Wikimedia educators with teachers, students, and emerging leaders in schools. The program provides hands-on guidance, capacity building, and continuous support to integrate Wikimedia projects into classroom learning.
Project Goals The Global WikiEducation Initiative (GWEI) aims to build capacity in education by equipping teachers, students, and emerging leaders with the skills and knowledge to effectively use and contribute to Wikimedia projects. The program will support sustainable school-based communities by establishing and strengthening WikiClubs that promote peer learning and ongoing participation in open knowledge activities. It will promote classroom integration of Wikimedia projects, enabling educators to incorporate Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, and other tools into teaching, research, and project-based learning. By encouraging a culture of leadership and mentorship, GWEI seeks to develop a strong network of mentors and mentees who can guide, train, and support new participants in their schools and regions. Furthermore, the initiative will bridge digital and knowledge equity gaps by empowering underserved schools and students, particularly in low-connectivity areas, through the integration of offline tools like Kiwix, ensuring all learners can access and contribute to open knowledge.
Challenges Addressed: Limited Digital Literacy Among Students and Teachers
Many schools lack structured support to build digital competencies, including how to critically engage with information online.
Low Awareness of Open Knowledge Platforms in Education
Teachers and school leaders are often unfamiliar with Wikimedia’s educational value and how it can support curriculum goals.
Lack of Mentorship and Role Models in Wikimedia Education
New contributors often struggle with where to begin or how to stay engaged in the absence of consistent support.
Language and Local Content Gaps
Swahili-speaking students, for example, often lack access to relevant, culturally contextual information in their language on Wikipedia.
Access Barriers in Low Connectivity Areas
Some schools face infrastructure challenges, making it harder to access or contribute to online knowledge platforms.
Key Activities The program will focus on mentor and mentee onboarding by identifying and training experienced Wikimedia educators and pairing them with teachers, students, and school leaders for mentorship. It will conduct school-based trainings and workshops, providing interactive sessions on editing Wikipedia, using Wikidata, uploading media to Wikimedia Commons, and applying open educational resources. Additionally, the program will guide mentees in establishing and managing WikiClubs in schools, creating spaces for regular engagement, peer learning, and sustained participation in Wikimedia activities.
Kiwix Program: The Kiwix Program provides offline access to Wikimedia projects and other open educational resources in areas with limited or no internet connectivity. Using Kiwix, a free, open-source software that allows users to download and browse content offline, schools, libraries, and communities gain unrestricted access to Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikivoyage, and more. This enables inclusive education and knowledge sharing, overcoming infrastructure challenges and promoting equitable learning opportunities.
Project Goals The Kiwix project aims to expand access to free knowledge by overcoming digital divide barriers and enabling offline use of Wikimedia content in remote and underserved areas. It seeks to support education in low-connectivity environments by equipping schools, community centers, and learners with reliable offline resources aligned with local curricula. The project will promote digital literacy and independent learning, encouraging learners and educators to explore, research, and contribute to knowledge even without internet access. Additionally, it will facilitate local content creation and sharing by integrating offline tools to complement online contributions and nurture community participation.
Challenges Addressed The Kiwix Program addresses several key challenges, including limited internet connectivity in remote and underserved areas, which restricts access to educational resources. It tackles the digital divide by providing equitable access to knowledge for students and educators in low-resource communities, addressing access inequality where learners often cannot reach up-to-date or high-quality information. The program also supports the development of digital literacy skills, reduces dependence on online infrastructure, and ensures access to culturally and linguistically relevant content through offline resources.
Key Activities The project will deploy Kiwix content servers, tablets, or laptops preloaded with Wikimedia content in schools and libraries, ensuring offline access to knowledge. Educators and students will participate in hands-on workshops to learn how to use Kiwix and edit Wikimedia projects when online. Offline content packages will be regularly updated and localized, including translations and materials relevant to local curricula. Community awareness campaigns will be conducted in partnership with local education authorities and NGOs, while usage patterns, learning outcomes, and community feedback will be monitored to improve program delivery. Additionally, learners and educators will be encouraged to create, edit, and improve Wikimedia content, enhancing both relevance and quality.
Content Creation and Improvement
Klexikon is a Wikipedia style online encyclopedia specially designed for children aged 6 to 13. It offers simple, reliable, and age appropriate content to help young learners understand the world around them in a safe and accessible way. Unlike regular Wikipedia, which can be too complex for children, Klexikon uses clear language and topics tailored to children's interests and educational needs. It also encourages participation by allowing children, with guidance, to contribute or suggest edits, promoting early digital literacy and curiosity.
Challenges addressed Most online resources are too advanced for children aged 6–13, limiting their ability to learn independently, and young learners rarely engage in content creation due to a lack of age-appropriate platforms and guidance. Educational content often lacks local language versions or culturally relevant examples, while many schools have limited tools or training to introduce safe, educational digital use. Additionally, children in underserved areas frequently face internet and resource gaps, creating further barriers to equitable learning and digital participation.
Key Activities The program will include interactive training workshops to introduce children to Klexikon and teach them how to navigate and understand age-appropriate content. Teachers and facilitators will be trained on how to use Klexikon as a learning tool in classrooms. Schools will be supported to establish Klexikon Learning Clubs where children can read, discuss, and contribute ideas for new topics. Additional activities include translating and localizing Klexikon articles into local languages, integrating content into school curricula, organizing storytelling and reading sessions, and encouraging the use of offline tools like Kiwix in low-connectivity areas to ensure all children can access and benefit from the platform.
WikiWeb3 Swahili: The project aims to increase the availability, quality, and accessibility of Swahili-language content on Web3 technologies across Wikipedia and its sister projects, empowering Swahili-speaking communities with the knowledge, digital literacy, and skills needed to actively participate in the decentralized digital era.
Challenges Addressed The project addresses the limited content and representation on Swahili Wikipedia, particularly on emerging topics such as Web3 technologies. This scarcity restricts access to reliable, culturally relevant knowledge for Swahili-speaking communities and limits opportunities for learners and contributors to engage meaningfully. The project also tackles gaps in digital literacy and technical skills needed to edit and create content, empowering communities to actively participate in knowledge creation and dissemination in their own language.
Key Activities The project will organize Swahili WikiWeb edit-a-thons, including online and in-person editing marathons focused on creating and improving Web3-related articles in Swahili. It will conduct digital literacy and Wikipedia editing workshops tailored to explain Web3 technologies and Wikimedia contribution processes. Authoritative Web3 resources will be translated and localized into Swahili to ensure cultural relevance. Experienced Wikimedia editors will mentor new contributors, providing guidance and technical support throughout the campaign. Community outreach will leverage social media, webinars, and partnerships with educational institutions to raise awareness and recruit participants, while multimedia contribution drives will encourage the uploading of Swahili-language Web3 videos, infographics, and images to Wikimedia Commons.
