Wikimedia Community User Gorup Turkey (WMTR)’s main strategy for 2025 is to continue its organizing regular yearly events including education activities at schools and universities, thematic edit-a-thons with civil society partners and photo contests such as WLE.

WMTR will continue the Education Program in universities as usual. Additionally, observing how important it is to have students get better acquainted with Wikimedia projects before higher education, in turning them active contributors during university years; our strategy will be increasing secondary school partners. In partnership with academics from Bursa Uludag University, our group has already started to design a 4-week program for introducing Wikipedia editing 10-11-12th grade students. We'll continue seeking external funding to have the program implemented it in Bursa high schools and testing the results. One of the strategic goals of the group is to increase the coverage of undercovered topics, particularly at the Turkish Wikipedia and our approach is building partnerships with culture institutions and NGOs. The topics to be focused are to be determined during the year; however, the” accessible museums” project carried out with Bongo Art social enterprise and the ongoing work with KulturEnvanteri.org on entering cultural heritage items to Wikidata are two examples which are likely to be continued.

Another strategic goal is to motivate and support community of active editors in their contributions to Wikimedia projects. This year, rather than initiating local off-wiki events such as photo-walks and edit-a-thons and inviting the community members to join, we plan to respond to the support demands of those community members willing to become organisers. The group started to receive such demands upon the success of some events - such as a 3-day tour of 3 Wikimedians photographing 40+ historical mosques in Edirne and uploading 1000+ photos-. Our approach will be responding to the demands from individual community members and the wiki clubs at universities to organize similar events. The support provided to community members is planned to include covering some travel expenses and requests for expenses related to skill improvement trainings. Organizers/participants of those activities will be motivated to contribute preparation of small guidelines related to their work, such as “how to edit Wikipedia articles about archeological sites” or “how to photographing objects at museums”.

WMTR organizes biweekly meetings for the members and the editor community, mostly held online. We plan to continue online meetings for enabling participation from the whole country, while increasing the number of face-to-face meetings in Istanbul where most user group members live. We will use the office in Kadıkoy for Istanbul meetings. The format of the meetings has been informing/discussing the status of current projects and events, chatting informally, and answering Wikimedia projects related questions. Our plan is inviting speakers to talk to participants about relevant topics. The topics and speakers are to be determined by the community demand.

Our group’s approach to bring new contributors for the Commons project is organizing Wiki Loves contests. Getting international prizes from those contests is very motivating for the photographers. Therefore, we increase the number of contests organized. WLE was organized for the fifth time and WLF was organized for the first time in 2024. For the next year, the plan is to organize a new photo contest.
