Our mission is to promote Wikimedia projects with a focus on Hausa-language editions and Hausa-related topics—covering culture, history, society, and beyond. We are committed to bridging the knowledge gap, ensuring representation of Hausa culture, empowering volunteers with skills, and fostering inclusive participation in the global Wikimedia movement. The Hausa Wikimedians User Group implements a range of programs and approaches designed to expand Hausa-language knowledge on Wikimedia projects, strengthen our community, and ensure sustainability. Our core programs include Community Development through workshops, expert facilitators sessions, and partnership campaigns that enhance member skills and engagement. We run Wikimedia Participation Projects such as quarterly meetups, annual general meetings, editathons, and global contests to promote inclusivity and connect our community to the wider Wikimedia movement. Through Content Creation and Enrichment, we organize regular editathons, content improvement drives, and collaborative writing challenges to improve the quality and volume of Hausa Wikipedia and related projects.

Our Programs and Approaches

Community Development Programs: Workshops, leadership development sessions, and advocacy campaigns to enhance skills and participation. Wikimedia Engagement & Participation Projects: Quarterly community meetups, annual general meetings, editathons, and contests to promote inclusivity. Core Content Creation & Enrichment: Organizing regular editathons, content improvement challenges, and collaborative writing projects to improve Hausa content. Partnerships and Collaborations: Partnering with universities, libraries, and organizations to expand reach and embed Wikimedia in academia. Awareness Campaigns & Advocacy: Raising awareness through campaigns, media outreach, and public engagement to promote Wikimedia projects.

Challenges We Face

Skill Gaps – Small pool of skilled volunteers limits content quality. Newcomer Retention – Low retention rates hinder community growth. Access to Quality References – Scarcity of Hausa-language sources for reliable referencing. Sparse Institutional Participation – Limited involvement from universities and institutions. Infrastructure Barriers – High internet costs affect participation. Geographical Concentration – Activities mostly urban-centered, leaving rural areas unreached.

Strategies to Address the Challenges

Strategy 1 – Content Generation and Quality Improvement: Organize in-person editathons and quarterly workshops. Upskill facilitators and mentors to improve the quality and volume of Hausa-language content. Strategy 2 – Community Building and Resilience: Develop future leaders through Train-the-Trainer programs, hold quarterly meetings and an AGM, and implement Volunteer Data Support and Micro-Grants. Strategy 3 – Recruitment, Participation, and Partnerships: Leverage contests, social media campaigns, and university partnerships to recruit newcomers and institutionalize Wikimedia activities. Strategy 4 – Retention and Barrier Reduction: We plan to expand our Volunteer Data Support Program to accommodate the most of our teeming volunteers, maintain transparent nomination, and run quarterly evaluation reports to improve retention. Strategy 5 – Expanding Reach and Increasing Diversity: With the commencement of the bi-monthly Community Development Micro-Grants to support projects in underserved regions, and ensure transparent community-driven application processes.
