Programs, Approaches, and Strategies (2026) The Igala Wikimedia Community https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Igala_Wikimedia_Community is a group of dedicated Wikimedians working to revitalize the Igala language by promoting free knowledge in the Igala language on Wikimedia platforms. Our primary mission is the development and continuous growth of the Igala Wikipedia (igl.wikipedia.org) and related projects such as Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata with the goal of preventing the Igala language from going into extinction. Since our existence in 2022, we’ve been able to mobilize both students and language enthusiasts to build an open and free body of knowledge in the Igala language. In 2024, our joint efforts helped move Igala Wikipedia from the incubator into a full-fledged Wikipedia project. This achievement has inspired our community to do even more to revitalize, preserve and promote Igala language, culture, and indigenous knowledge through outreach, community engagement, translation, and documentation of Igala language. Over the years, we have been able to organize impactful and successful programs such as: Revitalizing Igala Language through Wikimedia projects, with a strong focus on Igala Wikipedia with support from Wikitongues User Group. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Creating_incubator_hub_within_Wikipedia_for_Igala_Language Expanding Igala Language Access on WIkipedia.(https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Expanding_Igala_Language_Access_on_Wikipedia:_Creating_and_Engaging_a_Community_of_Contributors) a project carried out witth WMF rapid fund - https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Programs/Wikimedia_Community_Fund/Rapid_Fund/Expanding_Igala_Language_Access_on_Wikipedia:Creating_and_Engaging_a_Community_of_Contributors_(ID:_22279144) Wikipedia training workshops and campus engagement drives, https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Event:Building_Igala_Wikipedia_Community_Through_Campus_Engagement https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Programs/Wikimedia_Community_Fund/Rapid_Fund/Building_Igala_Wikipedia_Community_Through_Campus_Engagement_(ID:_22884637) Wiki Loves Folklore 2025 https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Folklore_2025_in_the_Igala_Community which was self funded.

Feminism and Folklore 2025, a self funded https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Igala_Wikimedia_Community/Feminism_and_Folklore_Campaign_2025_in_igala_Community

Wiki Loves Africa 2024 https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:WIki_Loves_Africa_2024_in_The_Igala_Community which was self funded In 2025 we Collaborated to organise Wiki Loves Africa 2025 https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Programs/Wikimedia_Community_Fund/Rapid_Fund/Wiki_Loves_Africa_2025_campaign_Collaboration_in_Nigeria_(ID:_22887753) result https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images_from_Wiki_Loves_Africa_2025_in_the_Igala_community We also collaborated to organize Wiki for Human Rights campaigns, 2024 (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Event:WikiForHumanRights_2024_in_Nigeria/Kogi) and we are doing the same this year, 2025. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Programs/Wikimedia_Community_Fund/Rapid_Fund/WikiForHumanRights_2024_in_Nigeria_(ID:_22591759) https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Programs/Wikimedia_Community_Fund/Rapid_Fund/WikiForHumanRights_2025_in_Nigeria_(ID:_23478676) We collaborated and participated in capacity building for the Let’s Connect Program in Nigeria 2025 https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Let%E2%80%99s_Connect_Peer_Learning_Program_Across_Zones_in_Nigeria/Overview These initiatives have contributed to a growing awareness of Wikimedia projects among Igala speakers across Nigeria. However, the work is far from complete.

Our Story and Challenges The idea of Igala Wikimedia Community was conceived out of a deep concern: Our language which is spoken by millions was becoming invisible online. The Igala language is endangered, and every day that passes without digital representation puts us closer to losing not just words, but culture, history, and identity. In 2022, a small group of passionate Wikimedians came together with one dream to make sure that the Igala language lives on in the digital world. We worked side by side to start the Igala Wikipedia on the incubator, and by 2024, we proudly celebrated its approval to a live project. It was a milestone that gave us hope. But we know the journey is far from over. Our community is still young. We lack resources, skills, and opportunities, which makes it hard to keep pace with the work needed. Igala remains poorly represented across Wikimedia projects, and many stories of our people, culture, and knowledge remain untold. . Approaches To address these challenges, we have come up with the following strategies: We will be organizing edit-a-thons and campaigns to increase the number of articles on Igala Wikipedia, while also contributing to other Wikimedia projects like Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata, we will also conduct outreach events to schools to increase awareness of Igala Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects amongst students, and at the same time recruiting them as editors. Another important focus will be on mentoring and improving the skills of both new and existing community members, ensuring they are empowered to make meaningful contributions. We will also collaborate with individuals and organizations to promote the Igala language and culture, strengthening the visibility and relevance of our community. In addition, we plan to partner with tertiary institutions to introduce Wikimedia in Education, creating opportunities for students and educators to engage with open knowledge. Our efforts will also include recruiting and training new editors, equipping them with the skills to contribute effectively.

Finally, we will institute annual Igala Language Awards to motivate educators and students, thereby increasing participation and investment in the Igala language and its related Wikimedia projects.

Why General Support Fund?

While our previous rapid grant requests have helped us achieve some results, our community still faces challenges with the scale of impact we can make each year. This is largely due to the limited number of rapid grants we can access at a time, the cap on the total funds an individual can receive annually, and the long waiting period caused by the way funding cycles are structured. We have realized that to truly achieve our goals, we need a more flexible and long-term funding approach. With a General Support Fund, we will be able to: Plan and implement with flexibility

Build capacity and skills within the community Sustain our community growth: Long-term funding will ensure continuity of programs such as mentorship, editor retention, and training.

Carry out campaigns more effectively: With stable support, we can actively and consistently participate in global campaigns (Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Folklore, Wiki for Human Rights, etc.) without logistical challenges slowing us down.

Focus on impact, not survival: We can invest our time in meaningful work: growing the Igala Wikipedia, mentoring new contributors, and forging institutional partnerships. Our Request for Support The Igala Wikimedia Community is at a pivotal stage of growth. To sustain our progress and expand our impact, we are seeking General Support Funds from the Wikimedia Foundation. This support will enable us to: Carry out our annual plan for 2026 effectively,

Implement both local projects and international campaigns with greater ease and coordination,

Increase the quantity and quality of Igala-language content across Wikimedia projects,

Strengthen community infrastructure with improved coordination and mentorship,

Build a thriving, self-sustaining community of contributors who will continue to preserve Igala knowledge and culture on open platforms.
