7. Where will this proposal be implemented? (required)
International (more than one country across continents or regions)
Due to U.S. sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Wikimedia Foundation restricts sending funds to Iran. As a result, we will not use this grant inside Iran under any circumstances.

Our operational area will primarily be in Europe (Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Turkey, and Armenia).

8. What are your programs, approaches, and strategies? What are the challenges that you are trying to address and how will your strategies support you in addressing these challenges? (required)

Our program for 2026–2027 supports Iranian Wikimedians both inside Iran and in the diaspora. The main problems are: (1) our community is divided between many cities and countries, (2) newcomers in Persian Wikimedia projects often lack training and support, and (3) activities are difficult to plan when they depend only on volunteers.

Because of local restrictions, we design our strategy carefully. For members inside Iran, we will give non-financial rewards (like e-books, gift cards, or certificates) to encourage participation in edit-a-thons. We will also invite active contributors in Iran to take part in international online events, and when possible, join events outside Iran with community support.

For the diaspora, especially in Europe, we will focus on one or two pilot cities with active members, while continuing online webinars and training sessions that reach a larger audience. For example, our 2024 International Women’s Day webinar had more than 500 participants.

Our strategies are:

  • Online training and edit-a-thons for both audiences.
  • Non-financial prizes for contributors inside Iran.
  • Small in-person workshops in pilot cities abroad.
  • Collaboration with European affiliates (WMDE, WMAT, WMNL, WMAM).
  • Ongoing mentorship to keep newcomers active.

This approach balances local limits with global opportunities and helps us build a stronger, more connected Iranian Wikimedia community.

Inside the Wikimedia movement, we plan to continue our cooperation with European affiliates such as Wikimedia Deutschland, Wikimedia Österreich, Wikimedia Nederland, and Wikimedia Armenia. These groups have already supported us with logistics, training, and hosting events. For example, Wikimedia Armenia hosted the Trainer Training program for our members, and Wikimedia Deutschland supported us in community celebrations. In the new program, we will invite these affiliates to co-host workshops, provide technical advice, and share training resources.

We also collaborate with regional communities, especially in Central Asia, where we share language and cultural ties. Our group has already co-organized online meetings with Central Asian Collaboration. In addition, we organized joint online article-writing contests with Russia, Armenia, and Italy, which brought together editors from different communities and helped create high-quality content across languages.

Externally, we work with cultural and educational institutions when possible, for example in providing prizes or materials for edit-a-thons. These are usually non-financial contributions, such as books, certificates, or venues for small events.

Through these partnerships, we can reduce costs, access expertise, and create more opportunities for Iranian Wikimedians both inside and outside Iran.
