Part 1: Understanding your work
[edit]Per the recent update on the Wikimedia Foundation Affiliates Strategy process, Wikimedia Affiliates that are General Support Fund grantees will fulfill their affiliate reporting requirements through their final or yearly grantee report.
If you are a Wikimedia Affiliate, you will use this form for your affiliate reporting and to address the affiliate health criteria. You do not need to submit a separate report to AffCom. Follow the guidance in the green boxes to report on how you met the corresponding affiliate health criteria.
If you are not a Wikimedia Affiliate, aligning your responses with the affiliate criteria is optional and not required.
1. Please share to what extent your programs, approaches, and strategies contributed to addressing the challenges you shared in your proposal. If they did not contribute as you believed they would, please share what obstacles you faced and what, if anything, you learned from them? (required)
For affiliates, use this space (Question 1.) to address Affiliate Health Criterion 1.1 (Goal delivery). Describe how you actively delivered on mission goals, e.g. content creation.
In our initial proposal, we outlined that we assessed the impact of our programs to guide our organizational and program strategy. This evaluation highlighted critical challenges, such as the need to prioritize certain programmatic areas to maximize impact. To address these challenges, we restructured our strategic focus to concentrate on key areas: Education and Skills Building Programs (e.g., Kiwix4Schools, WikiSkills for Librarians), Capacity Building and Community Development (e.g., TOT, Wiki Training ), Advocacy and Initiatives (, the Africa Wiki Challenge etc).
Education and Skills Development:
Kiwix4Schools Project : We engaged stakeholders in discussions and workshops to create a comprehensive program. This approach helped redefine the program's objectives and develop an effective implementation plan. A key challenge was the resignation of the partnerships manager at a crucial moment, causing delays. However, the new partnerships manager has been onboarded and has begun exploring partnerships with us.
For the Wiki Skills for Librarians initiative, we conducted two training sessions, equipping librarians with digital skills and demonstrating the value of Wikimedia for their work. The northern session took place in Tamale, while the southern session was relocated from Accra to Ho this year to improve access. Librarians showed particular interest in Wikidata, leading to the formation of our first Professional Wiki Club.
Capacity Building and Community Development:
Africa Wikimedia Technical Program (AWMT): The Wikimedia Tech Safari was an innovative program which sought to tackle pressing challenges such as content localization, developing technological tools, and enhancing African digital skills. Our major challenges were the exchange rate fluctuation difficulty in finding the right platforms for funds transfer to other parts of Africa. A good strategy adopted after encountering these challenges was the establishment of wikitech clubs on university campuses across the country.
Train the Trainers: Our first activity of the year was to host a three-day workshop for our hub leaders to build their capacity for the role. Trainings mainly focused on refresher courses and advanced wiki skills. They were also taught proper reporting and budgeting.
Advocacy & Initiatives
Africa Wiki Challenge (AWC): This year’s campaign focused on amplifying stories of innovative learning methods, transformative educational policies, and groundbreaking initiatives that shape Africa’s future. The challenge saw a significant increase in participation, culminating in 1,230 editors—a notable rise that underscores the growing enthusiasm for this campaign. Enhanced communication and providing support for interested participants through dedicated office hours helped us to achieve our goals. These editors contributed to 23,200 existing articles and created 6,830 new ones under the campaign’s theme. Contributions were made in 14 local languages across Africa, including Swahili, Hausa, Igbo, Fante, Twi, Dagbani, Frafra, Ghanaian Pidgin, Gurene, Kinyarwanda, and others.
Two new initiatives namely: "Shine Her Light" and "Ghana Polls" were introduced in the year to support our advocacy efforts. Shine Her Light sought to bridge the contributor and content gap on women specifically African women. While we made significant progress with the latter we did not see much improvement in the former as female participation was considerably low.
Ghana Polls : The Ghana Polls 2024 is an initiative by Open Foundation West Africa that seeks to provide accurate, unbiased updates on Wikipedia during the elections, ensuring that citizens across Ghana can access accurate, reliable information throughout the electoral process. Two key events—a workshop on combating misinformation and an edit-a-thon to enrich election-related content on Wikipedia—were successfully organized to equip stakeholders with tools to counter disinformation and document reliable information during the just-ended Ghana General elections.
2. Is there a plan to build on the key successes you had? If yes, please describe the plan and if no, please share the limitations to do so. For instance, did the activities lead to any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future? (required)
Yes.
We have learned from the various trainings and feedback from participants, the need to establish clubs and provide contextualixed support and training for various categories of our training participants. For instance, trainings should be professional based for people in different professions. Here, we focus most on the wikimedia projects and tools that are most useful for the professional group in particular.
We are also working on providing support for other communities on election based trainings.
We have also appreciated the impact of collaboration in the past year. As such, we will deepen our collaborative efforts this year for grater impact.
3. Please provide a link to reports that detail the activities that took place in the last year. This can include an annual report, Meta pages, and websites. If there are no links available, briefly describe the implemented activities and programs below or upload any files. (required)
