Part 1: Understanding your work

Per the recent update on the Wikimedia Foundation Affiliates Strategy process, Wikimedia Affiliates that are General Support Fund grantees will fulfill their affiliate reporting requirements through their final or yearly grantee report.

If you are a Wikimedia Affiliate, you will use this form for your affiliate reporting and to address the affiliate health criteria. You do not need to submit a separate report to AffCom. Follow the guidance in the green boxes to report on how you met the corresponding affiliate health criteria.

If you are not a Wikimedia Affiliate, aligning your responses with the affiliate criteria is optional and not required.

1. Please share to what extent your programs, approaches, and strategies contributed to addressing the challenges you shared in your proposal. If they did not contribute as you believed they would, please share what obstacles you faced and what, if anything, you learned from them? (required)

For affiliates, use this space (Question 1.) to address Affiliate Health Criterion 1.1 (Goal delivery). Describe how you actively delivered on mission goals, e.g. content creation.

In 2024, the Wiki Project Med Foundation implemented several programs and strategies to address the challenges outlined in their proposal, achieving notable progress across various initiatives. MDWiki was successfully added to the interwiki map, enhancing the accessibility of medical content across Wikimedia projects. Additionally, significant advancements were made with NC Commons, including the development of tools to import non-commercial images and collaborations with legal teams to clarify usage policies. These efforts expanded the reach and usability of medical resources for contributors and readers alike.

Offline access to medical knowledge was improved through innovative approaches. A new iPhone app, developed in partnership with Kiwix, enhanced the availability of offline medical content. The Internet-in-a-Box initiative was especially impactful, with all initial units selling out and a substantial waitlist demonstrating strong demand. 2. Is there a plan to build on the key successes you had? If yes, please describe the plan and if no, please share the limitations to do so. For instance, did the activities lead to any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future? (required)

The Wiki Project Med Foundation has outlined ambitious and targeted plans to build on its 2024 successes, setting clear three-year goals that demonstrate its commitment to expanding access to medical knowledge, enhancing multimedia content, and fostering global collaboration.

A key priority is to integrate interactive Our World in Data (OWID) graphs into at least 10 languages on Wikipedia while developing workflows to ensure the material remains updated. This builds on the foundation’s successful partnership with OWID, making high-quality, interactive data more accessible to diverse audiences. Alongside this, the translation efforts will continue to grow, with a goal of increasing the number of active translators to over 250, expanding translated articles from 3,000 to more than 10,000, working in over 70 languages, and reaching a combined total of 10 million pageviews. To further support this expansion, the foundation plans to reengage with Translators Without Borders (TWB), bolstering its volunteer network and expertise.

The foundation also aims to increase the number of articles ready for translation from 3,000 to 4,000, providing a broader library of high-quality medical content for global use. Efforts to improve multimedia integration include building workflows for seamlessly incorporating content from NC Commons into Wikipedia languages that choose to adopt it. This initiative complements an ambitious goal to move 500,000 public domain images from NC Commons to Wikimedia Commons, ensuring they are viewable with tools like the CT scan viewer, which would significantly enhance access to medical imaging resources.

To address the high demand for offline access, the foundation plans to continue distributing the Internet-in-a-Box (IIAB) through the Wikipedia Store. Meeting this demand may involve outsourcing assembly and customer support to scale production effectively. Additionally, the foundation intends to upload the entire collection of Khan Academy and TED videos to NC Commons, enriching educational content available through Wikimedia platforms.

The foundation’s innovative VideoWiki platform will also see further development. Collaborations with Basque Wikipedia will focus on video creation, while plans to introduce a text-to-video feature aim to make medical knowledge more engaging and accessible. A flexible calculator widget is also under development, with plans to test its functionality across multiple Wikipedia languages to provide users with interactive tools for medical calculations.

In academic and visual content, the foundation plans to publish a paper in the Bulletin of the World Health Organization, documenting the outcomes of its multi-year collaboration on essential medicines. This publication would highlight the global health impact of its initiatives. Additionally, developing relationships to enhance medical illustrations will ensure that visual content remains a cornerstone of its educational efforts.

These clearly defined goals build on the foundation’s successes in 2024, emphasizing scalability, innovation, and strategic partnerships. With these initiatives, the Wiki Project Med Foundation is poised to deepen its global impact, bringing reliable medical knowledge to even more people worldwide and continuing its mission to bridge critical knowledge gaps.

We did not collect explicit feedback. We have ample activities, products, partnerships, and metrics that demonstrate impact.

Three of our eight Board Members are women. Additionally, Board Members are from Africa, Asia, MENA, not to mention Europe and North America. As a truly global organization, we rely on local/regional expertise with an emphasis on multilingualism. This pulls people in from all over the world. Also, our emphasis on offline knowledge access, addresses global disparities and this requires partnerships where that technology is critical.

A skill we plan to focus on in 2025 is supply chain management for the Internet-in-a-Box (IIAB) initiative. The success of this program in 2024, with the rapid sellout of the initial batch and subsequent high demand, has underscored the importance of streamlining production and distribution processes to meet growing needs efficiently.

To acquire expertise in supply chain management, we will collaborate closely with the Wikimedia Store team, leveraging their existing infrastructure and experience in handling global distribution. This partnership will involve outsourcing assembly of the IIAB devices to specialized manufacturers, ensuring consistent quality and scalability. We will also develop streamlined workflows for inventory management, order fulfillment, and customer support, drawing on best practices shared by the Wikimedia Store team. Additionally, we plan to engage external supply chain consultants to refine these processes and identify areas for optimization.

By combining the Wikimedia Store’s logistical capabilities with specialized training and external expertise, we aim to build a robust and scalable supply chain for IIAB. This will enable us to significantly expand production in 2025, ensuring that more communities worldwide have access to reliable offline medical knowledge.
