Part 1: Understanding your work
[edit]Per the recent update on the Wikimedia Foundation Affiliates Strategy process, Wikimedia Affiliates that are General Support Fund grantees will fulfill their affiliate reporting requirements through their final or yearly grantee report.
If you are a Wikimedia Affiliate, you will use this form for your affiliate reporting and to address the affiliate health criteria. You do not need to submit a separate report to AffCom. Follow the guidance in the green boxes to report on how you met the corresponding affiliate health criteria.
If you are not a Wikimedia Affiliate, aligning your responses with the affiliate criteria is optional and not required.
1. Please share to what extent your programs, approaches, and strategies contributed to addressing the challenges you shared in your proposal. If they did not contribute as you believed they would, please share what obstacles you faced and what, if anything, you learned from them? (required)
For affiliates, use this space (Question 1.) to address Affiliate Health Criterion 1.1 (Goal delivery). Describe how you actively delivered on mission goals, e.g. content creation.
Below are the programs, approaches, and strategies we presented in our proposal and in addressing key challenges, the obstacles we faced, and what we learned from them.
1. Increase the Sustainability of Our Movement:
a. Wiki Audio Walk:
Proposal: Aimed at increasing content from underrepresented language communities, such as the Tyap language-speaking communities. This involves recording words, phrases, and sentences of different Tyap language variants and related Nenzit languages for uploading on Wikimedia Commons.
Outcome: In June 2025, we travelled to five Tyap-speaking communities to record words of the Tyap Mabatado dialect in those communities to ascertain the differences in speech to understand our community members from these communities, and know how to represent their variations in our projects. Please find the link to the Commons project page here: [1]. Some of the challenges faced include noisy backgrounds, people being shy to speak loudly, and some people we planned to respond to us when we got there, but were unavailable when we got there, and we had to find others to play the role. Distance was a challenge, and the journey to some village interiors was quite challenging.
b. Tyap Wiki Bootcamp:
Proposal: A bootcamp for Tyap-speaking people to immerse themselves in editing, recording words, and creating Wikipedia articles and Wiktionary entries in Tyap and English. This bootcamp will be organized in collaboration with the Tyap Language Development Board (TLDB).
Outcome: During the course of this fiscal year, which spanned a year and a half, we had two of these very projects. First in August 2024 (see link to project page here: [2]), and the second between August and December 2025 (see link to project page here: [3]). Both years' execution went as planned. The Tyap Language Development Board (TLDB) was supportive and provided us with a volunteer teacher to take our participants on a Tyap language session, and also provided us with the learning materials, which we co-edited and handed over to our students. In 2024, we were not so satisfied with the results of the Bootcamp because many students stopped editing afterwards. To address this, we decided to change the approach in 2025. Instead of having an in-person-only event, we had both in-person and online events and spread the event across five months rather than only one month. This enabled us to keep editors engaged as long as possible. This gave us a better result than the previous 2024 event.
c. Wiki Loves X Campaigns:
Proposal: Participation in Wiki Loves Folklore, and Wiki Loves Africa to take images from underrepresented areas of the Central Nigerian Plateau for publishing on Wikimedia Commons.
Outcome: Our group participated for the first time in the Wiki Loves Folklore 2025 event for the first time, and we were able to contribute the highest number of images to the event in Nigeria (see link to event page here: [4]). The Wiki Loves Africa 2025 event was also like it, though not our first outing (see link to event page here: [5]). For the first time, many ethnicities in the Central Nigerian Plateau are having images of their cultures on Wikimedia Commons. Our challenges were minimal, like having professional photographers participate. However, we hope to continue sharing helpful tips to help participants upload better images in the upcoming events. Also of note, although not captured in the proposal, we participated as a community in the Feminism and Folklore 2025 event for the first time, to create articles related to women and girls in the Tyap Wikipedia (see link here: [6]). About 24 articles were created.
2. Improve User Experience:
a. Friendly Working Space:
Proposal: Establishing a dedicated working space with necessary equipment for Wikimedia organization staff and community members.
Outcome: This was not approved for execution.
b. Equipment for Programs:
Proposal: Providing necessary recording devices, smartphones, laptops, cameras, and other equipment required for program activities.
Outcome: We were able to purchase audio recorders, smartphones, laptops, cameras, and other equipment for our activities in 2024, and they have been helpful to us as a community.
3. Coordinate Across Stakeholders:
a. Tyap Wikimedia Outreaches:
Proposal: Creating hubs in different Tyap-speaking towns, conducting edit-a-thons, and attending regional festivities to publicize the organization and gain support.
Outcome: Two hubs were created for the Tyap-speaking community, and two communities were created for the Jju and Hyam speakers (see list here: [7]). We have installed leaders in these hubs and communities to promote Wikimedia activities in their localities, but we have been limited in supporting their volunteer members in purchasing internet bundles to keep editing during the 2024-2025 fiscal year.
b. Tyap Wikimedia Outreach Follow-ups and Edit-a-thons:
Proposal: Providing in-person retraining for members from newly established hubs to enhance their editing skills.
Outcome: Although we established leaders in the hubs and communities to propel their volunteer members to keep editing, we had not been successful in keeping all of them active. Each hub and community has its peculiar challenges, but in terms of solution, funding is common to all. The most common challenges here are editing devices most people use, poor internet connection, and the availability of internet browsing bundles. The solution could be to donate smartphones, support them with 5G routers, and support them with internet browsing bundles. In our current grant, we will only be able to support them in solving the last challenge.
c. Collaborative Wiktionary Editing:
Proposal: Collaborating with other Wikimedia affiliates to edit each other's languages in their respective Wiktionaries.
Outcome: In 2025, we had a pilot collaborative wiktionary project between the Tyap Wiktionary and the Dutch Wiktionary editing team of Wikimedia Nederland (see link to the pilot project here: [8]). At the end of that pilot project, we decided to extend the project by having Part B of this editing project (see link here: [9]). We were able to take advantage of this project to create more entries in the Tyap Wiktionary as well as update its look. We had a blog post on diff on this project, stating our challenges, solutions, and results (find link here: [10]).
d. Wukintyap Office Hour:
Proposal: Dedicated time for volunteers to discuss and improve their understanding of the Wikimedia movement.
Outcome: This was not approved for execution.
4. Investing in Skills and Leadership Development:
a. Staff Retreat:
- Proposal: Retraining and gathering ideas from staff (paid and volunteering) to enhance organizational progress.
- Outcome: We were only able to have a small version of what we earlier envisaged to cut costs. In 2024, we only had members of our hubs and the Jju community attend (see link to page here: [11]). In 2025, we did the same, but we had one more community added, the Hyam community (see link to page here: [12]). The topic of discussion here involves the leaders of these communities letting us know what the challenges of their communities are and how we can come in. We also take the time to let them know our vision as an organization and how Wikimedia projects could be propagated in their areas.
b. End-of-the-Year Get Together (Community Meetup):
- Proposal: Organizing a relaxed gathering to appreciate contributors and engage in Wikimedia activities.
- Outcome: In December 2025, the Tyap Wikimedians community organized a meetup, in which not less than 17 of its members were present. The event was organized to hold the community's 10th TWU Community Meeting, award prizes to the highest editors in the Wikidata @13 Birthday data-a-thon, and also to hold the community meetup proper at a recreational facility.
c. Micro-grants Program:
- Proposal: Providing funds to community members and hubs for community-building projects.
- Outcome: This was approved for execution.
In addition to these proposals, we had included events like:- monthly community online meetings (see link here: [13])
- developed a new program, the Mentor Me! program (see link to page here: [14]) to help community members acquire skills to edit Wikimedia projects, with many new members brought in in the process.
Two other programs not mentioned in the proposal, which we undertook as a community, include:
- Language Outreaches: We introduced two language Wikipedia projects, namely the Jju Wikipedia (see event page: [15]) in September 2024 (which just got a Wikipedia approval in December 2025 due to the resilience of its editors and our guidance), and the Hyam Wikipedia (see event page: [16]) in September 2025. We are working on introducing at least one new language Wikipedia project in Central Nigeria into the Wikimedia space to propagate Wikimedia activities in more languages of the Nigerian Middle Belt, especially Nenzit (Central Nigerian) languages.
- Wikidata Birthday and Data-a-thon: In 2024 and 2025, our community not only celebrated Wikidata's birthday, but we also created edit-a-thons to add Wikidata items and lexemes to Wikidata (see 2024 event page here: [17]). In 2025 (see event page here: [18]), we edited Wikidata lexemes in three languages: Tyap, Jju, and Hyam. We hope to keep adding more as we progress.

2. Is there a plan to build on the key successes you had? If yes, please describe the plan and if no, please share the limitations to do so. For instance, did the activities lead to any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future? (required)
We plan to build on promoting these programs in the future:
- Mentor Me!: This helps our community members develop the skills required to edit more Wikimedia projects, including English-language projects, to promote our region's representation online.
- Tyap Wiki Bootcamp: This is necessary to enable our Tyap editors to be literate in the language they utilize for editing Tyap projects like the Tyap Wikipedia, Tyap Wiktionary, Wikidata lexemes, Wikifunctions, and others. We hope to not only have a Tyap-only bootcamp but one involving other languages we are grooming in the future.
- Wikidata data-a-thons: We hope to continue with this one-month-long activity to add Wikidata lexemes in Tyap, Jju, Hyam, and other languages that will follow to Wikidata. This is another way of documenting our languages, as well as creating Wikidata items about properties associated with our region and beyond in the English language.
- Collaborative editing: Our collaborative editing projects with the WikiWoordenboek (Dutch Wiktionary) have helped us in boosting the number of entries in the Swánga̱lyiatwuki (Tyap Wiktionary) and their overall quality. We hope to continue with this project and hopefully expand it in the future. We previously had a Wikipedia collaborative editing project with the Wikimedians of Romania and Moldova, and we also hope to revisit this project in the near future, if not with the same groups, but with other Wikimedia groups as well.
- Outreaches: Thus far, we have been able to introduce two other languages (Jju and Hyam) into the Wikimedia space. We hope to introduce at least one language each year into the Wikimedia Incubator, and groom their editors until they get out of incubation into the mainspace.
- Wiki Loves X events: These events help us to contribute images related to our region, including our cultures and environment. We will need to capture more of these to make Wikimedia Commons a hub for images related to Central Nigeria for the world at large.
- Wiki Audio Walk Campaign: This new project can only get better. We started it in 2025 in our community, but we hope other language communities key into it. It aims to capture words of a language and speech variations. This, when made available on Wikimedia Commons, helps in providing audio for use on Wikipedia, Wiktionary, and other Wikimedia sister projects involving that language. We hope to gain more partners, especially from Wikimedia France's LinguaLibre, to advance this project into a more developed one in the near future.
- Leadership retreats and community meetings: We hope to continue with our annual leadership meetings where we invite our language communinty leaders and hub representatives for a roundtable discussion to understand ourselves and find ways of pushing forward our community in general. The community meetings, which we are now having just five times a year, are to let our volunteer member editors know our progress and contribute to it through their insights in online calls. We hope someday we will hold some of those sessions in person as well.
- End-of-the-Year Meetups: We want to have more memorable end-of-the-year meetups in the near future, wherein we can invite all members of our community to come together and strengthen our bonds.

We usually have a clear picture of what we want to achieve at the end of every program. We usually send out invitations to the general public, stating our event days, topic, and other details. However, what we do not have control over is who honours our invitation. We usually accept all who show up and try to guide everyone, regardless of what or who they are, so long as they are well-behaved and contribute or show promises of contributing to our program and activities in the long run.

Part 3: Skill Development / Capacity Building

Regarding skill development, the grant support was not enough to enable me undergo any skill development. However, a close study of the community dynamics and critical thinking was needed to create alternatives for projects that do not seem to be yielding results at first. For example, the Tyap Wiki Bootcamp, whose approach we adjusted to involve both in-person and online sessions. We may as well return to the first approach in future events or try a third approach in our third outing to see what gives us the most satisfactory result.
In terms of gender representation, we sought a female to play the role of a Communications and Advocacy volunteer staff member, but later settled for a male one, due to the unavailability of a suitable female to take on the role. The search for a female continued afterward, and in our 2026 fiscal year, we put out a vacancy notification to the community, and a female was selected for the role. We shall have two female volunteers added to our team in the 2026 fiscal year and a male one. Gradually, we hope to have more females taking charge of more roles in the organization, with the males supporting them to grow.
As part of contributing to our community members' skill set, we developed the Mentor Me! program, with experts from across the Movement to impart their knowledge on our community members, which was a success. We plan to continue with this program, to bring in newer people to acquire basic skills needed to contribute meaningfully to Wikimedia projects, not just the Tyap projects but English-based projects, for the benefit of our region's visibility. Also, we have the Leadership Retreat for community and hub leaders to impart on them our experiences, so they could also impart their local communities, as well as Community Meetings to share ideas with community members.
The funds meant for a member of the group to attend the Wiki Indaba 2025 event were repurposed to create the Mentor Me! program, due to the importance of skills impartation to our community members, to be of better value to the Movement.
13. What is one capacity/skill area that you would like to focus on for the next year? And how do you plan to achieve this capacity? (required)
We will like to focus on attending Wikimedia conferences such as Wikimania in person, and any other, to learn new skills from the wider Movement. This would be helpful to us in terms of financial, human resources management, and organizational governance.

Our community is a growing one. Our projects do not only include the Tyap language. Our mission is to propagate Wikimedia activities in the Tyap and sister Nenzit languages, as well as represent our region on Wikimedia projects in other languages like English. We would need support from the wider Wikimedia community in terms of technical support, like helping to fix our Wiki Audio Walk site on Commons with LinguaLibre for easy recording of sound and storage of the same. We also need the support of the Foundation in helping us secure more funds to support our efforts.

Our normal grant cycle was supposed to run from July 2024 to June 2025, but we changed from Round 1 to Round 2 of the GSF funding cycle. Hence, we got a half-year grant to enable us complete our activities for 2025. This was a major change in the initial agreement.
Secondly, we received a grant donation of the sum of 270,000 NGN, which we added to our programmes to enable us solve pressing needs. We had adjustments in prices of items as the Naira inflation deeply affects the cost of items and services in the market.
