8. What are your programs, approaches, and strategies? What are the challenges that you are trying to address and how will your strategies support you in addressing these challenges? (required)

1. Increase the Sustainability of Our Movement:

a. Mentor Me!: Created to help aspiring, new, and existing editors learn the basics of editing in the Wikimedia space. It is being organized in in-person and online sessions, with experienced editors invited from across the world to offer their wealth of experience in an online presentation and in-person. Participants attend and get the same through physical contact with local organizers. A Wikimedia Dashboard is set up to give assignments to participants, and a WhatsApp group is created for coordination.

b. Wiki Audio Walk: Aimed at increasing content from underrepresented language communities, such as the Tyap language-speaking communities. This involves recording words, phrases, and sentences of different Tyap language variants and related Nenzit languages for uploading to Wikimedia Commons via Lingua Libre.

c. Tyap Wiki Bootcamp: A bootcamp for Tyap-speaking people to immerse themselves in editing, recording words, and creating Wikipedia articles and Wiktionary entries in Tyap and English. This bootcamp will be organized in collaboration with the Tyap Language Development Board (TLDB).

d. Wiki Loves X Campaigns: Participation in Wiki Loves Folklore and Wiki Loves Africa to take images from underrepresented areas of the Central Nigerian Plateau for publishing on Wikimedia Commons.

e. Wikidata Campaign: Utilizing the Wikidata Birthday period to run a data-a-thon in the community and promote Wikidata activities in the community.

2. Improve User Experience:

a. Friendly Working Space: Establishing a dedicated working space with necessary equipment for Wikimedia organization staff and community members.

b. Equipment for Programs: Providing necessary recording devices, smartphones, laptops, cameras, lenses, and other equipment required for program activities.

c. Internet Bundles Support Programme: Providing internet subscriptions to active editors to support their efforts in volunteering their time and energy to promote the Movement's goals.

d. End-of-the-Year Get Together (Community Meetup): Organizing a relaxed gathering to appreciate contributors and engage in Wikimedia activities.

3. Coordinate Across Stakeholders:

a. Tyap Wikimedia Outreaches: Creating a new Wikipedia project and a hub in that language community to engage in a long-lasting edit-a-thon until the Wikipedia gets approved, paying visits to selected secondary schools and tertiary institutions to introduce our Movement to them and gain new partnerships, paying advocacy visits to legislators to influence policies, creating short videos to increase awareness about our mission as well as advocate for changes in our society in line with the Foundation's goals, and attending regional festivities to publicize the organization and gain support and new partnerships.

b. Collaborative Wiktionary Editing: Collaborating with other Wikimedia affiliates to edit each other's languages in their respective Wiktionaries.

4. Investing in Skills and Leadership Development:

a. Leadership Retreat: Organizing a conversation between the volunteering hub and community leaders within the Tyap Wikimedians User Group leadership, to communicate and re-communicate the vision of the organization, and for all to make inputs to achieve a more meaningful future together.

b. Community Meetings: Organizing quarterly meetings between the leadership and the volunteering community to share our wins and losses, and get feedback from community members on ways to move the organization forward.

c. Mentor Me!: Again, this programme is aimed at investing in the skills of community members and others within the Movement who wish to participate.

NB: The program has been aligned with the Wikimedia Foundation 2030 Movement Strategies by focusing on community growth, content expansion, outreach, engagement, capacity building, and support. The specific focus on the Tyap language has been removed to align with the broader movement strategies by introducing other related languages into the Movement. As of the time of writing, the TWU has begun the Jju Wikipedia project, and is about to begin the Hyam Wikipedia project. In the coming year, the Adara Wikipedia project would begin, and every year, at least one language would be introduced into the Movement to fulfill the desire for Wikipedia to be read in every language, with special focus on the Central Plateau languages.

Public policy advocacy

9.6.1. What specific laws, or legislative topics, are you targeting with your advocacy plans? Please be as specific as possible. (required)

1) We are aiming for the Language Policy in Nigeria to create an environment where every Nigerian language would be granted an official status in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We may not see seriousness on the part of the government in protecting the endangered human languages spoken within the bounds of Nigeria and beyond, except it is brought into law, the importance of every one of those languages through the promotion of literature in those languages. This, in turn, makes it easier for Wikimedians to find sources to use for the development of more Wikipedia projects in those languages in the long run.

2) We are also aiming to lend our voices to the Freedom of Panorama (FoP).

9.6.2. What are the main methods and tactics via which you plan to advocate for this public policy change? Please be as specific as possible. (required)

1) I. We intend to advocate for the elevation of all languages in Nigeria to the status of an official language within the country through:

  • physical visits to three lawmakers
  • publish open letters in the newspapers advocating the same
  • open-street march around the National Assembly in Abuja, carrying placards and slogans.

II. We intend to create short videos and host them online, on social media, our organizational website, and on Wikimedia Commons.

III. We also plan to pay visits to three tertiary institutions to meet with the heads of these schools to speak on Wikimedia activities, as well as the rights of other languages in Nigeria to be developed, protected, and promoted.

2) We intend to do the same as above regarding the Freedom of Panorama (FoP) in Nigeria.

9.6.3. Approximately, how much of the requested budget will you dedicate to public policy advocacy (local currency)?
5310000 NGN
10. Please include a link to or upload a timeline (operational calendar) for your programs and activities. (required)
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1U_GNBylPuHuiaoJnluFZVVnbKnmfIsxt/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=102744618042216854907&rtpof=true&sd=true

12. Will you be working with any internal (Wikimedia) or external partners? Describe the characteristics of these partnerships and bring a few examples of the most significant partnerships. (required)

We will be working with both internal and external partners.

  • We hope to continue with what we have started in terms of reaching out to different experienced Wikimedians to make presentations in our Mentor Me! programme, online. In this programme, we intend to forge partnerships with different Wikimedia project volunteers and staff to ensure that our community members benefit from the wealth of experience of these resourceful people for the growth of our community as a whole.
  • In our Tyap Wiki Bootcamp program, we aim to work closely with the Tyap Language Development Board to provide us with useful guidance and literary materials on the Tyap language we may use to help participants get immersed in both the Tyap language and Wikimedia editing within the programme duration.
  • We also hope to collaborate with another Wikimedia affiliate in our Wiktionary Collaborative project. This is to ensure the exchange of ideas and help us develop the Swánga̱lyiatwuki (Tyap Wiktionary) to a standard Wiktionary, while making our own contributions to their Wiktionary project for mutual benefits.
