Important Outcomes and Challenges

The Wiki Advocates Philippines User Group has continued with its activities, centering on the determined targets cited in our grant application amidst the challenges encountered in the past few months, climate-related, volunteer retention, and economic changes. These targets are intended to provide sustainability with our previous activities in the past grants, ensuring that each project being run follows our long-term track and will provide backing for our future pursuits. The specified outcomes and challenges enumerated here are data gathered both from the Wikipedia projects being worked on and the volunteers that comprise our community.

We have continuously worked on our target projects, Wikiquote, Wikipedia, and Wiktionary, through engagement in global campaigns and local community edit-a-thons. Editors may be low in number, but what we have achieved is consistency among repeat participants. We introduced Wikidata as a new project to our volunteers, especially Lexemes, who view it as a Wiktionary with distinct functions.

To supplement the needs of our volunteers in terms of skills development, particularly in community organizing and holding leadership roles, we held several programs ranging from training and information sessions to internship programs, leadership initiatives through the Hatch-A-Wikimedian program, online participation in Wikimania sessions, and involvement in the overall organizational planning.

Our learning hub was a source of encouragement for both the old participants and newbies to partake in our activities, along with other collaborative activities aside from being editors. As we also function as a local library, volunteers are tasked with minor responsibilities to maintain our learning hub. Through this space, we have become more open to our community in welcoming newcomers, not only during edit-a-thon sessions but on a regular basis.

We have also utilized the Let’s Connect resources as recommended to us after the grant approval and even become part of two learning clinics as sharers. Our skills and expertise as editors and organizers were not only shared through online clinics, but we have also utilized opportunities to come to conferences and present our locally implemented programs. These steps have put us in a good standing, thus securing a partnership with aligned organizations, by which some provided fund support, book donations, and free access to databases.

Implementing all of these is difficult given the challenges we've faced recently. In November 2024, we have suffered from four to five typhoons, of which Typhoon Kristine have the greatest onslaught. Not only did we physically suffer from damaged houses and flooded roads, but the impact of it has greatly affected our team morale. Despite that, the group has initiated a donation drive, together with Art+Feminism, to provide immediate assistance to stranded passengers along the road and school supplies to chosen educational institutions, one of which is where we conducted the pilot program for WikiDunong. This climate issue has also affected our partnership with schools as they are more focused on recovery than on extracurricular activities.

More so, the lack of staff to handle other minor tasks in relation to office maintenance, handling volunteers, and other clerical responsibilities has been handled by the three paid staffs, limiting their capacity for more project management, acquiring partnerships, and conducting intensive training for volunteers.

In the new grant application, we sought to continue with our initiatives, guided by what proved to be effective in terms of community organizing and volunteer development. With what we have surpassed among the challenges encountered, we look into developing alternatives and security so we can still push through with what we planned, despite unforeseen events.
