The prime purpose of running Wiki Loves Butterfly project consecutively for 8 years is to create and develop Wikimedia contents in the form of data, photographs and articles pertaining to the subject of butterfly taxons found from all over the eastern and north-eastern parts of India. The project aims to explore these areas through several scientific field documentations covering as many districts as possible and document habitat of butterflies to collect detailed data related to butterfly diversity of the regions. Through these field-documentations, amateur and expert data collectors and photographers of the WLB project team shall document butterfly habitats gathering data and shooting high quality photographs of butterflies followed by proper scientific identification. These findings will gradually also be published in peer reviewed scientific journals.

WLB projects had been successful over the years mostly because of properly planned strategies, positive approaches and a highly motivated and dedicated team. We have always given importance to allot the right kind of tasks to the right kind of people who have the expertise to properly plan and execute them. Our strategy to deploy multiple teams simultaneously at several areas in prospective butterfly seasons also helps us to secure the maximum possible outcome. Our continuous commitment to extensive outreach programs through organizing photowalks, national level butterfly meet-ups, nature study camps in schools and colleges shall feed our requirement of recruiting new volunteer contributors ensuring growth and sustainability of the project along with increase mass awareness about the importance of conservation of butterflies along with the vision of free knowledge movement. Promotion of WLB through social media handles also gives us visibility among people at large.

Credibility, sustainability and supply of resources of a scientific project like WLB largely rests on partnership and collaboration with notable scientific organizations, resource persons, special interest groups and like minded organizations, which we sufficiently have and are developing since the beginning. Loyal adherence to the support, guidance and suggestions of our parental body, the West Bengal Wikimedians User Group shall always remain another strength of WLB project which helps mature our understanding more and more related to Wikimedia.

In this proposed phase, we are planning to explore the unexplored hotspots, districts and provinces of the vast eastern and north eastern India, but mostly focusing on Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. We will also start exploring the state of Jharkhand and increase our presence in Odisha. Apart from that, we are planning to set our feet in the neighboring country of Bhutan, which straddles the Indo-Malayan and Palearctic biogeographic realms, and is an integral part of the Himalayan biodiversity hotspot with a diverse array of flora and fauna.

There are always some challenges in the course of a field documentation based scientific project like WLB like unpredictable weather, natural calamity, remoteness of places, transportation difficulties, safety and security of the team members etc. In conformity with countering such challenges, we have planned and formulated our strategies and approaches as described above as we have done many times previously, but mostly almost all our challenges are overcome by continuous communication and collaborative rapport with the local enthusiasts and the officials of the concerned forest departments and sharing of information on a regular basis.

We are also planning to build a dashboard specific for the Wiki Loves Butterfly where we can display different kinds of visualizations in an interactive way from the data and content generated by the project since its inception. For that, we are seeking a back-end developer and a front-end designer who will be able to deliver the product.
