Wiki Loves Folklore is an international photography contest that aims to document both tangible and intangible cultural heritage across the world. The vision of the project is to bridge the gap in the representation of local folklore and culture on Wikimedia Commons under a free license.

Entering its seventh edition in 2025, Wiki Loves Folklore invites photographers to contribute media (including photographs, video, and audio) that highlight their local culture. These contributions, covering a range of elements like folk dances, folk music, folk traditions, culinary delights, attire, folklore, and a wide array of traditions, including ballads, folktales, legends, traditional performances, games, seasonal festivities, customs, folk arts, religious practices, mythology, and more, are made available under free a license for use on Wikipedia and other platforms with proper attribution. The contest thus plays a key role in celebrating and documenting diverse aspects of global folk traditions.

Simultaneously, the Feminism and Folklore writing contest on Wikipedia focuses on improving coverage of women in folklore and writing articles in multiple languages regarding the intangible cultural heritage from different regions around the globe. This initiative includes contributions on topics such as folk dances, folk music, traditional activities, games, cuisine, attire, folklore, and traditions, spanning ballads, folktales, fairy tales, legends, traditional performances, games, seasonal observances, calendar customs, folk arts, folk religion, mythology, and beyond, with the broader aim of closing the gender gap on Wikipedia by enhancing content related to women in folklore.

Moreover, the Wiki Loves Folklore International Photography Contest aligns with the principles of the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. It actively promotes the documentation of cultural living heritage by encouraging participants from diverse backgrounds to share visual representations of their culture. This not only raises awareness but also fosters a sense of community engagement in preserving and transmitting cultural practices and traditions. By amplifying the representation of intangible cultural heritage on Wikimedia Commons, the contest ensures that these traditions are documented and made accessible for future generations, contributing to their preservation in line with the goals of the UNESCO Convention.

In addressing the challenges of underrepresentation in both local cultural documentation and gender diversity on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, our strategies focus on key area for participation in the Wiki Loves Folklore photography contest and the concurrent Feminism and Folklore writing contest. These initiatives collectively help to document and promote local cultures while also increasing gender diversity within the Wikimedia community. By ensuring contributions from a wide range of participants, these strategies help address the cultural and gender imbalances in freely available media and content.

Team Description for Wiki Loves Folklore & Feminism and Folklore

Wiki Loves Folklore and Feminism and Folklore operate with a dual structure: an international team and a network of local teams. Each local team is led by a country-specific coordinator, such as the Nigerian Coordinator for the Nigerian campaign or language-specific coordinators like the one for English Wikipedia. 12. Will you be working with any internal (Wikimedia) or external partners? Describe the characteristics of these partnerships and bring a few examples of the most significant partnerships. (required)

Yes, we will be working with both internal (Wikimedia) and external partners to enhance our collaborative efforts. Internal partnerships primarily involve close collaboration with various Wikimedia chapters and user groups, which helps strengthen our core projects and initiatives. External partnerships include a diverse range of organizations, such as folklore institutions, media partners, and GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) institutions.

We aim to maintain and deepen our collaborations with existing Wikimedia affiliates and community groups. Over the past six years, we have developed strong partnerships within the Wikimedia movement, and we plan to expand this network by establishing new regional and language-based partnerships for both our photography contest and Wikipedia writing campaign editions

For example, last year we partnered with Project Korikath from Bangladesh, which resulted in the creation of two tools for the Feminism and Folklore project: the Missing Article Tool and the CampWiz Tool. Notably, CampWiz won the "Coolest Tech Award" at Wikimania 2024 in Katowice, Poland, in its first year. We are eager to pursue similar partnerships in the future, which will enhance the user experience and make participation in our campaigns more user-friendly, secure, and efficient.

We also have an ongoing partnership with Kiwix, which has been our fiscal sponsor for the past year and beyond. Kiwix has been instrumental in maintaining project finances and ensuring transparency. They provide valuable financial advice, assist with compliance, and ensure the effective management of funds for the project.

As in previous years, we plan to initiate partnerships that ensure regional and continental media exposure, collaborating with regional ambassadors and teams to promote the campaign. This aligns with our strategy to effectively disseminate information and news about the campaign to local audiences.

Additionally, we have actively supported our regional coordinators in forming partnerships with local GLAM institutions, photography organizations, radio stations, and research institutions. This bottom-up approach nurtures an ecosystem where global intangible heritage is promoted and expanded through regional collaborations, furthering our goal of preserving and documenting cultural heritage globally.
