8. What are your programs, approaches, and strategies? What are the challenges that you are trying to address and how will your strategies support you in addressing these challenges? (required)

We deliver impactful global programming aimed at democratizing knowledge access through community-led initiatives, digital campaigns, ethical documentation, and advocacy. Our core programs are designed to address historic imbalances in representation within open knowledge ecosystems by amplifying underrepresented voices and intangible heritage. These campaigns engage contributors across 50+ country editions, 140+ global country participation and 51 language editions, elevating content on indigenous, feminist, and cultural knowledge through localized media, edit-a-thons, and storytelling.

Approach and Strategic Pillars Based on the review from our community organisers and strategy specialists, our 5-year strategy is guided by six interconnected pillars:

  • Strengthening Institutional Infrastructure: We are investing in organizational resilience through team expansion, HR/legal frameworks, and digital project management systems—ensuring effective program delivery and transparent governance.
  • Expanding Inclusive Participation: Our outreach aims to train over 500 new contributors by 2026 scaling to 3000+ contributors by 2030, scaling campaigns across geographies while prioritizing multilingual and feminist engagement. We also design ambassador programs and fellowships to deepen community leadership.
  • Building Tools for Ethical Documentation: We are piloting digital infrastructure like Commons Image categorization tool, project management software, campaign analytics dashboard, all rooted in accessibility, consent, and community co-creation.
  • Strengthening Global Advocacy & Partnerships: Through summits, policy engagement, and planned collaborations with GLAMs, media, and multilateral institutions, we are advancing a decolonial vision of digital heritage and knowledge justice.
  • Amplifying Community Voice: Our media strategy includes launching the "Open Voices" series, multilingual newsletters, podcasts, and visual storytelling to elevate community narratives beyond Wikimedia platforms.
  • Diversifying and Sustaining Funding: We are expanding our funding base via philanthropic partnerships, Patreon tiers, and multi-year grant applications to ensure financial sustainability.

Challenges We Address

  • Underrepresentation in Knowledge Systems: Global knowledge repositories continue to marginalize voices from the Global South, women, indigenous peoples, and non-Western epistemologies. We counter this by intentionally focusing on these communities and themes.
  • Limited Infrastructure for Community Development: Many cultural campaigns lack transparent tools for analytics of their program performances for improvement and toolkits and training for improved partnerships by our local organiser for their campaigns. Our digital toolkits and workshops would embed professional practices into community workflows.
  • Burnout and Volunteer Fatigue: Through structured workshops, professional (easy-to-translate) toolkit recognition programs, and backend tools, we reduce operational burdens on local organizers while enhancing their ownership and leadership.
  • Fragmented Advocacy Efforts: Our strategic partnerships and efforts are designed to build coherence across movements—from digital rights to open access—positioning cultural knowledge at the heart of policy and public discourse.
  • Financial Fragility in the Nonprofit Ecosystem: To prevent over-reliance on single grants, we will make efforts to diversify our revenue streams while maintaining mission alignment through donor education and impact storytelling.

Through these strategies, we would be scaling participation and reimagining open knowledge as a space for justice, creativity, and shared heritage. Our strategy ensures we move beyond metrics to impact—where communities are not just included but centered in the co-creation of knowledge futures.

To ensure effective execution and strategic oversight of our growing portfolio of programs, we are allocating staff resources proportionally to our evolving needs in 2026. Our staffing plan is lean but highly focused, relying on experienced leadership and coordination to maximize impact across our campaigns and pilot initiatives and support our volunteer leaders across communities locally and on an international level.

Executive Director (0.25 FTE) The Executive Director (ED) will provide strategic leadership, partnership development, financial oversight, and coordination across all OKIF initiatives. Their role includes:

Additional information

[edit]
22. In this optional space you can add any other additional information about your proposal or organization that you think can help us when reviewing your proposal. (optional)

Our strategic goals are in harmony with the insights from the Wikimedia 2030 Movement strategy: Coordinate Across Stakeholders, Invest in Skills and Leadership Development, Manage Internal Knowledge, Identify Topics for Impact, Innovate in Free Knowledge, Evaluate, Iterate, and Adapt the strategy, finances, governance, and, operational structure of our organisation to the growth of the organization.

These goals have been our constant focus in recent years and will continue to be so in the years to come. Our 55+ partners affiliates, who are our Wiki Loves Folklore country coordinators, and over 51+ Feminism and Folklore organisers, expect us to be present throughout the year to assist them with the global infrastructure and supporting tools for our programs. We always keep these aims in mind. To establish partnerships, support our partner affiliates, continue our innovation efforts, and ensure better representation across the country, we need assistance from the WMF.

We are working very hard to maximize our efforts for an improved impact but a boost from WMF would allow us to essentially support not only the existing campaigns but also great help to our efforts for expanding the pilot projects. It would boost our abilities to better support our exponentially increasing partner affiliates and organisations with improved technical infrastructure and community development programs, enabling us to achieve all our objectives and even more. This year will mark introduction to new pilot programs, advocacy initiatives and partnerships along with preparation plans for multi year grant expansion after this year.

Our team is underfunded in comparison to similar-sized global programs, we sincerely believe that with WMF's assistance in ensuring the proper operation of our administration, organisation, and activities, we can ensure improved representation across the Wikimedia ecosystem and beyond. With our impactful campaigns and leadership mentoring program, we can truly empower the community's under-represented voices.
