Main proposal

[edit]
1. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be a title for the Meta-Wiki page. (required)
Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand 2026-2029
2. Do you want to apply for the multi-year base funding for 3 years? (required) (only for returning applicants)
Yes
2.1. Provide a brief overview of Year 2 and Year 3 of the proposed plan and how this relates to the current proposal and your strategic plan? (required)

Year 2 and 3 our programmes will continue along the same lines as Year 1. We expect to have a clearer understanding of what our engagement and programmes with Māori look like after we develop our strategy in Year 1.

We plan to hire a part-time Programme Officer in Year 2 if our growth continues at the current rate. This will be dependent on ESEAP budget constraints. Our 2026-2030 Strategic Plan outlines the engagement and activities we are planning, and our 2026 Outreach Plan is specific about the organisations we want to engage with and how we plan to go about it.

We will continue to support our successful Wikimedian in Residence programmes in the GLAM and University sectors, cement our main centre meetups, and move towards development of editor bases in one or two regions.

In Year 2 and 3 we will have a better understanding of what engagement with Māori will involve to improve and support our indigenous people’s understanding and involvement on Wikimedia platforms.

7. Where will this proposal be implemented? (required)

8. What are your programs, approaches, and strategies? What are the challenges that you are trying to address and how will your strategies support you in addressing these challenges? (required)

Our main programmes are the funding and support of Wikipedian at Large and Wikipedian in Residence positions, and the support of local editathons and regional meetups. Our current programmes are described in an easy-to-read format in our draft Annual Community Activity Report 2025/26 in Meta. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Aotearoa_New_Zealand/Annual_Community_Activity_Report_2025/26. We urge readers of this submission to read our draft Community Activity Report, to help them understand our work and our community. This three year funding submission proposes to continue with programmes similar to those described in the activity report. Our support of Wikipedian at Large projects, Wikipedian in Residence projects and local editathons has greatly improved content in several of the WMF platforms. However, growing the number of editors remains a significant challenge. The long term trend of active editors in New Zealand is stable, but we seek to grow the number. The Wikimedian in Residence project at University of Otago is one of our key initiatives that aims to grow the movement. The project is already introducing academics and a large number of tertiary students to the power of open knowledge systems through WMF platforms. We have links with other tertiary institutions in New Zealand and plan to grow these relationships. We seek to engage more young people through the use of Wikipedia as part of the learning programmes.. Our relationships with multiple GLAM institutions are also key to building engagement that will grow the movement. As one example, the summer student programme at Auckland Museum, supported by the Wikipedian in Residence, has introduced young people to writing for Wikipedia.

The challenges that face us today include: Recruiting Board members. We face difficulties in recruiting suitable people for our Board. We recognise that a more diverse board membership would make us a more effective chapter, and have recently recruited two young people who have been student interns in the Auckland Museum Wikipedia programme.

Diversity: We know that the demographics of the people editing Wikipedia in Aotearoa New Zealand does not represent the demographics of the country. In particular, Māori and Pasifika people are under-represented. There are cultural, socioeconomic, and digital divide barriers to increasing their participation. The Board is continuing to work on strategies for improving engagement.

There are active editors and organisers from the LGBTQI+ community in Aotearoa New Zealand. We plan to develop programmes of events in partnership with those contacts.

We have active editors and organisers focussed on contributing to the Women in Red project. We are committed to maintaining the representation of women in the governance of the chapter and supporting developing women as organisers and editors.

Outreach to the GLAM sector: We are working to extend our existing engagement with the GLAM sector by building on the experience of our relationship with Auckland Museum in particular. We have had contacts from other GLAM organisations and plan to develop new relationships.

Outreach to universities. The Wikimedian-in-Residence programme at University of Otago is an important new initiative that we anticipate will build engagement and provide experience and models that we can offer to other tertiary institutions.

Training editors and event organisers: We continue to draw on the expertise of a small number of highly active editors and organisers in New Zealand. We are upskilling our paid team, curating learning resources to draw on for training in events management. We are working with the Australian chapter on developing resources to build a well designed learning journey for new editors and to support established editors to improve their editing practice.

Maintaining connection: We will continue to focus on developing the Wiki community within New Zealand and maintaining connections with the international community. Our programmes will include regular meetups, editathons, and the annual Wikicon. We have learnt that supporting other organisations to run effective public programmes can significantly expand the numbers of events that are available so will continue with this approach in addition to our own programme.

We collaborate with our Wikimedia partners in Australia and more recently with Peru thematic (culture, gender and ecology), as well as external organizations. In partnership with Wikimedia Australia (WMAU), we have joint initiatives such as the 1Lib1Ref campaign and the Wiki Science photography competition. Our teams actively participate in each other’s annual conferences as speakers and presenters, fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration.

In Aotearoa New Zealand, we are eager to learn from Australia’s work with First Nations communities. Our goal is to develop guidelines that will enhance our engagement with Māori, ensuring respectful and effective collaboration.

The activities of our external partners, including Auckland Museum, the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, Otago University, and Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research, are instrumental in our efforts to grow the movement and increase and improve contributions to Wikimedia Projects. We intend to grow our external partnerships by responding proactively to approaches for assistance and guidance and by continuing to promote WANZ’s existence with like minded organisations.

A significant portion of our funding is dedicated to joint partnership activities. These collaborations have led to improved engagement by partners in the Wikiverse, training of new editors, continued engagement of existing editors through a range of community events, outreach to other partners, and additions of new content and substantial improvements to existing content on our priority projects of EN Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons and Wikisource.

To expand our reach, we have developed a comprehensive Outreach Plan aimed at engaging with aligned organisations. This plan is designed to stretch WANZ into new relationships and includes seeking shared funding opportunities, collaborating on projects and events, and presenting to audiences that can help us grow our community of editors and organizers.
