One of the affiliate main programmes that have been done since the past few years is the indigenous language editathon and training sessions. There are a lot of indigenous languages in Malaysia however these languages are mostly endangered and lack online resources. With that, we approach these communities to teach them how to add their indigenous language’s vocabulary into Wiktionary to ensure there is free access to these languages online. Our strategy is usually collaborating with villages and local community associations and also education institutions. The reason why we approach community associations and education institutions is because they usually have established their language’s orthography and standard spelling which will make contributing to Wikimedia projects easier. Some of our success was managing to publish three new Wikipedia editions which are Iban, Kadazandusun and West Coast Bajau Wikipedias. We have collaborated with the Institute of Teachers Education Kent Campus where they train future teachers for the Kadazandusun language. It made publishing the Wikipedia from Incubator a success.
Other programmes that we are aiming to do is to mentoring emerging Wikimedia communities within the region. This has been suggested by Jacqueline to the affiliate as we have helped other communities in the region by assisting them in organising events and giving best practices to them in managing their community. The communities that will be pioneering this programme would be Singapore, Taiwan, Timor-Leste, the Philippines and Cambodia. Our approach is to provide them training sessions on how to organise Wiktionary and Wikipedia workshops and also editathons. We will be teaching them on how to collaborate with other institutions based on our years of experience. For starters, we will be having photowalks and workshops with these new emerging communities. The challenges we might face are language barrier and the far distance of these communities. We need to encourage communities to get involved in organising events for them to attract more volunteers to grow the Wikimedia movement within their communities.
Furthermore, we will conduct programmes with WikiClubs in educational institutions by organising meetups with the students and teachers. We will be overseeing their activities and provide support and guidance for them to be able to organise their own activities. Some of the Wikiclubs are IPGM Kent Campus and IIUM. The big challenges would be time and interest among the students. Their time is limited due to their class and could only join events during the weekends or permissions from the faculty. With that, we will dedicate specific time to help them in organising events in their institutions.
The other programme is bilateral Wikipedia editathons. We have a strong partnership with foreign embassies in Malaysia. We will be conducting Wikipedia workshops and editathons related to the embassy’s country. For instance, every March we will be collaborating with the Embassy of Sweden in Kuala Lumpur to organise a few editathons for Wikigap. We have done this for a few years now. Other than that, Wikipedia Ukraine Cultural Diplomacy Month which we collaborate with the Embassy of Ukraine in Malaysia. Our main challenge is in finding interested participants. This is true for most of our physical events. To deal with this, we collaborate with institutions such as embassies. With that, the embassies can help promote the event and find the participants.
Other than that, we will be doing Wikimedia Friendships with other Wikimedia communities around the world. We have done this over the past few years starting with the Wikimedia Japan-Malaysia friendship. We organise meetups and editathons together with the community. We also organise simultaneous physical events. For instance during Wikipedia Asian Month, both Japan and Malaysia communities organise an editathon at the same time and date and we connect each other through ZOOM. Our challenge is finding suitable articles for the editathons. It takes time for participants to find missing Wikipedia articles. Hence, having discussions prior to the event will be helpful to come up with an article list for the editathon. We also organise Pitabangans which are Wikipedia editathons about the hosting city/country of the Wikimedia conferences. For example, we will be organising a Pitabangan for France during Wikimania 2026. We have done this for Wikimania 2025 and other Wikimedia conferences.

- 12. Will you be working with any internal (Wikimedia) or external partners? Describe the characteristics of these partnerships and bring a few examples of the most significant partnerships. (required)
We will be working with many internal and external partners. It is very important for the affiliate to organise events with partners whether they are internal or external partners. This is because we have a hard time finding participants on our own, resulting in some events in the past attracting very few to none participants. Partners are usually well-established and bigger than the affiliate. Hence, they can assist us by promoting our events with their large following and recognition among the public. For internal partners, we will be approaching Wikimedia communities within the ESEAP region due to shared culture and interest. For example, with the Singapore community. For external partners, we usually collaborate with educational institutions like universities and schools. We notice that collaborating with them provides participants for our events and they are interested in our events. Other than that, we collaborate with foreign embassies in Malaysia such as embassies of Japan, Sweden, Ukraine and France. They have bigger influence and recognition. Having their names as partners in our events attract participants in joining our events since we have established relationships with big names.
