As a newly established community user group, the Wikimedia Cyprus (WM Cyprus) user group has already achieved significant milestones in the first eight months of 2024. As the background preparations have been ongoing since 2023 in terms of recruiting the admin team as well as the volunteers, after being formally established as a user group, outreach activities and promotions have been taking place. The informal group has existed since 2018. The strategic plan was the next step in the formalisation of the group.
Based on the analysis in the strategic plan, three main areas were determined on which the Wikimedia Cyprus group will concentrate in the 2024-2027 period.
These areas are: i. Wikimedia Community Building in Cyprus, focussing on gender and underrepresented groups. ii. Develop initial collaborations with higher education institutions iii. Awareness raising on open knowledge and Wikimedia through events in Cyprus These objectives have been developed through community consultations with the relevant stakeholders. The aim of these objectives is not only to raise awareness regarding the Wikimedia Movement across Cyprus, but also through free sharing of knowledge to motivate the communities across the island to get closer through a common purpose. We would like to involve especially underrepresented groups across different communities in Cyprus to work towards the same goal of knowledge for everyone. WM Cyprus is suitably placed to achieve these goals as people involved in the group are representatives of various communities on the island and have outreach potential in their own communities. The following activities have been planned for 2025:
- Wikimedia Community Meetups: First Tuesday of every month. Meetups for the Cyprus Wikimedia community to foster networking and collaboration among individuals interested in content creation and dissemination. Provide a platform for sharing ideas, discussing challenges, and initiating joint projects.
- Partnership with Educational Institutions: Collaborate with schools, colleges, and universities in Cyprus to integrate Wikipedia editing and content creation into educational programs. Encourage students and teachers to contribute knowledge to Wikipedia, while enhancing digital literacy skills.
- Gender Equality Edit-a-thons: Organize edit-a-thons, once per quarter, focused on improving gender representation on Wikipedia. Provide training and resources to participants on how to create and edit articles about notable women and address gender bias in existing content.
- Wiki Gap Cyprus: Host Wiki Gap events in Cyprus in celebration of International Women’s Day to raise awareness about the gender gap on Wikipedia and encourage women's participation. Collaborate with local organizations and institutions to organize workshops, panel discussions, and editing sessions.
Wikimedia Cyprus is very fortunate as there are many international organisations on the island as well as prestigious universities that share common values with the Wikimedia Foundation, with whom partnerships can be established. Regular meetings will be organised with the universities to raise awareness among students who may be interested in joining the group, while edit-a-thons will also be arranged within the universities. This is one of the main goals of Wikimedia Cyprus. One of the short-term goals is to register Wikimedia Cyprus as a civil society organisation in Cyprus, in order to become more organised, hire a part time staff and also to have access to more funding opportunities to be able to be involved in more Wikimedia projects.
