The Wikimedia Ghana User Group (WMGH) envisions a future where many Ghanaians online are aware of and have the capacity and motivation to create and share the sum of all knowledge leveraging our movement's free knowledge infrastructure.
As the national affiliate, our mission is to empower the nearly 20 million Ghanaians online by creating awareness about our projects and resourcing people to use and contribute to the sum of knowledge.
Among the current challenges facing the mission in Ghana we are focusing on the following in 2025/2026:
1. Low awareness of Wikimedia projects and the volunteering opportunities in Ghana compared to other global user-generated content platforms where people spend their time online. There is also low awareness of public policies that facilitate our work as well.
2. Limited number of organizers where the ratio of organizers to Ghanaians online seems less than 1 per 100, making it impossible for editor recruitment to happen at a large scale and at a fast pace.
3. Gender inequality in STEM in Ghana contributes to the gender gap in Wikimedia participation.
4. The underdevelopment of Ghanaian languages due to colonialism and policy limits content creation and use of indigenous language contributors.
5. Many potential and active contributors are from low-income communities, limiting access to digital resources and participation.
The impact of these challenges means the continuous record of low number of active editors in Ghana (and average of 90 active editors in Q4 2024) and severe under representation issues that hinder the global vision to build the sum of all knowledge.
Our programmatic response to the challenges 2025/2026 Drawing from our ongoing learnings from this grant year, as well as the national and global challenges facing the movement, we have identified key work for 2025/2026. The following four core programs that will contain this work:
1. Activities to welcome new contributors and retain existing ones with the plan to increase active-editor count of Ghana. 2. Exploring how the needs of the Ghanaian Wikimedian connect with country and global policy dialogues through advocacy work
- Ensuring program and resource equity by embarking on initiatives and activities that support:
- Low-income contributors with free internet at our events
- Female participation and content gender gaps elimination with tailored campaigns
3. Under-developed Ghanaian language Wikipedias. 4. Partnering with other Ghanaian affiliates for bigger impact rather than doing fragmented and needless duplicated work.
Our strategy to successfully complete our programs is to decentralise initiatives and resource regional nodes (communities) based on Ghana’s 16 administrative regions, to scale work across the country.
Nodes are lightweight groups of Wikimedians who are based in a region and can start, and support the facilitation of events and activities for their regions and participate in them.
Nodes are open, members don't need to be members of Wikimedia Ghana. They welcome anyone on condition they are based in the said regions. That said wiki school clubs and other local wiki hubs can join the nodes.
Each node has a unique volunteer node lead and attached facilitators and are currently able to host funded activities.
In 2025/2026, node work will be expanded to be the main input to our editor recruitment and retention program at the regional level and platform for assessing the penetration of Wikimedia in Ghana.
Programs, activities and objectives Increasing and Sustaining Participation Under this work, we welcome new contributors and implement tactics to retain editors:
Regional Wikipedia Roadshow Annually, our user group’s trainers have travelled across various administrative regions in Ghana, recruiting and training new editors.
2024/2025, we have visited Koforidua, Ho, Kumasi, Takoradi, and Cape Coast with more to come—bringing in 10 to 15 new editors per event.
As part of our efforts to decentralize, we plan to transition the responsibility of organizing these workshops to volunteer-led regional nodes. This shift will empower local communities to take ownership of the mission and accelerate outreach efforts.
Regional nodes will develop their own calendar to host 2 workshops each in the grant year where new editors can learn the basics of Wikipedia editing. No administrative region will be left behind.
Objective: Maintain a platform through which newcomers coming from diverse places in Ghana can be sustainably recruited.
KR1: Recruit 500 newly registered contributors to be integrated into the nodes
Bi-weekly Editathons
As part of our efforts to retain existing editors who will in turn enhance content quality on Wikipedia, the group organizes bi-weekly edit-a-thons.
These edit-a-thon sessions focus on expanding articles related to breaking news and current affairs—topics that people are actively searching for on Wikipedia and across the internet.
In the coming year, we aim to maintain the bi-weekly editathons but theme them to accommodate regional nodes’ regular editathons as well women-only meetings (see our Equity programs). We will also look at restructuring our evaluation of this initiative.
While we are convinced that edit-a-thons contribute to active editor numbers in Ghana and also contribute to improving Wikipedia’s coverage of current affairs projects, we need to measure more actively the impact of the sessions beyond the basic metrics to see how it contributes to active-editor count, or at least, a one-edit-per-month target for each editor recruited or engaged.
Objective 1: Keep editors engaged weekly to help maintain active-editor numbers in Ghana
KR1: Boost the active-editor count in Ghana by 10 editors (the average number of active editors recorded by stats.wikimedia.org for Q4 in 2024 for example was 90)
KR2: Engage at least 25 existing editors per week
KR3: Dedicate a quota of about 12 meetings to female editors
Objective 2: Improve Wikipedia’s coverage of current affairs in Ghana
KR1: Improve at least 100 articles per month on Wikipedia
Objective 3: Learn about the impact of organised editathons on overall active-editor metric in Ghana
KR1: Investigate and report on ways to determine how many of the active editors in Ghana per stats.wikimedia.org are obtained from these weekly events.
KR2: Depending on what we learn, we will submit a wish to the Community Wishlist to request a tool for measuring active-editor impact
Promotion of Growth Features on Social Media
We're passionate about showcasing the Growth Features – set of tools like Newcomer Tasks, Newcomer Homepage, and the Help Panel, which help new editors get their first set of edits without the support of an organiser or a requirement to attend an event.
We are aware there are not enough organisers to go around, or a concerted or coordinated effort to connect organisers to communities among all affiliates conducting training for trainers.
That is why we embarked on our Nimble project to be a tool to stand in for organisers. We have discontinued Nimble because of the overlaps with the Growth Features.
We were looking to help new editors self-onboard with these Growth features. This activity is focused on creating visibility for the tools.
Objective: Ensure a newcomer who may not have the chance to encounter an organiser or workshop gets another opportunity to learn to edit Wikipedia.
KR1: Receive 20 unique clicks to a Wikimedia Ghana landing page dedicated to informing people about Growth Features.
KR2: 50% conversion rate of the unique clicks to the landing page to the creation of a Wikipedia account, signaling an interest to use the Growth Features.
Wiki Loves Places This campaign focuses on creating and improving location-related entries on Wikidata, specifically through the use of geo-information and geo-tagged photos that will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. These images will bring to life the stories of places across various Wikimedia projects and initiatives like OpenStreetMap, which serves as a foundation for Wikimedia Maps.
We will be documenting place names and locations all over Ghana, through volunteers recruited or based in the nodes.
Objective: Create a richer, more detailed, diverse and variable information about Ghana on Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons and OpenStreetMap. KR1: Take at least 500 geo-tagged photos about places and upload them to Wikimedia Commons.
KR2: Document at least 500 new place names and locations on Wikidata and OpenStreetMap. Equity Here, we ensure program and resource equity by embarking on initiatives and activities that help deal with inequalities:
Notable Ghanaian Women on Wikipedia Campaign in March 2026 The Ghanaian Women on Wikipedia campaign, aims to enhance the representation of Ghanaian women on Wikipedia by creating and expanding articles. The campaign will see to the creation and improvement of articles and content about our women.
Since this is a national campaign, we will work through our regional nodes. We will delegate specific roles such as hosting the launch or focusing on targeted article categories to different nodes.
Objective: Expand Wikipedia’s coverage of notable Ghanaian women by creating and improving articles to ensure a more balanced coverage.
KR1: Impact at least 100 new articles on notable Ghanaian women. KR2: Engage 30 female editors in the month of March
Monthly Women’s Editathon
The monthly women’s edit-a-thon is an initiative dedicated to retaining female editors. We warmly invite women from across Ghana to join editing sessions to build editing skills, connect with each other with the aim of retaining them.
This grant year, we successfully hosted two women’s edit-a-thons, and 2025/2026, we aim to host 12 which will be part of the bi-weekly edit-a-thons mentioned above..
Objective: Retain female editors
KR1: Host 12 female edit-a-thons
Shared Community Resources
Shared Community Resources is a new initiative we launched in 2024/2025 to support Wikimedia organisers. We aim to provide free event space for emerging Wikimedia groups that may not have funding. We aim to take some of the venue burdens off organisers.
This year, we successfully piloted the initiative by hosting 2 groups in our space with one more we are hosting in March 2025. We're looking to expand this effort in the coming year. Our goal is to welcome more than 10 groups.
Objective: Support organisers with event space.
KR1: Honour at least 10 requests for our shared spaces this year.
KR2: Achieve 80% satisfaction among organisers who use the space.
KR3: Identify one more areas of need where we can share our resources
International Mother Language Month - February 2026 International Mother Language Day, marked on February 21 by the United Nations, celebrates language diversity and the preservation of mother tongues. At Wikimedia Ghana, we commemorate this with a month-long event.
In this month, we will hold a Twi Wikipedia Clean-Up Campaign, which seeks to improve the quality of Twi Wikipedia articles. Many editors rely on the Content Translation Tool to translate articles from English to Twi, but the tool often produces inaccurate translations, sometimes inserting incorrect characters or content that is not in Twi at all.
Twi is spoken by both native and non-native speakers totalling 85% of the Ghanaian population. It is important to let the Twi Wikipedia reflect the importance of the language.
The campaign will look at cleaning up articles in the Twi Wikipedia, improving content quality, and encouraging both new and existing editors to participate in Twi Wikipedia.
This will be implemented through our nodes which are located in the predominantly Twi speaking regions.
Objective: Improve the quality of Twi Wikipedia articles and engage editors as a result
KR1: Clean up at least 100 Twi articles KR2: Involve at least 20 editors to help review and improve translations KR3: Translate 100 databox properties
Monthly Ga Wikipedia Translatathon (Incubator)
The monthly Ga Wikipedia Translatathon aims at improving the Ga Wikipedia Incubator by translating articles from the English Wikipedia into Ga. Since Ga Wikipedia is still in the incubator stage, expanding its content is crucial for its growth and progression into a standalone Wikipedia.
Objective: To increase the number of translated Ga articles on Wikipedia while actively engaging editors. KR1: Translate at least 20 new articles per month into Ga KR2: Train, recruit and engage at least 10 Ga editors to participate in the translatathon monthly
Ghanaian Languages Wikimedia Community Meetup 2025 The Ghanaian Languages Wikimedia Community Meetup 2025 will be the third edition of a mini-conference that brings together Wikimedians working on indigenous language Wikipedias in Ghana. The Wikimedia Ghana User Group and the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group jointly support this year’s event with a joint budget. Objective: To grow synergy between the Ghanaian language communities and share knowledge around improving the various language Wikipedias. KR1: Contribute half of the funding for the language meetup using our general support grant. KR2: Support 40 Wikimedians to attend the meetup. Community Development
Wikipedia Anniversary Jollof Party Since 2024, we have celebrated Wikipedia's birthday with the Wikipedia Jollof Party, held on the first Saturday after Wikipedia’s birthday on the 15th January. This event brings together Wikipedia active editors (contributing 5 edits a month) across Ghana to connect face-to-face, share ideas, and celebrate Wikipedia's impact on promoting free knowledge.
The event features the popular West African dish, Jollof rice, adding a cultural touch to the gathering. It is part of our efforts to foster community engagement and strengthen our regional nodes.
This year, we successfully observed this event for the first time, gathering 68 contributors across various locations within their regions.
In the coming year, we plan to expand the event to include all regional nodes across Ghana, aiming to increase participation from 69 to approximately 100 editors. We also intend to open the event to newcomers as a platform to introduce them to the Wikimedia community, fostering collaboration and community spirit.
Objectives To provide a platform where contributors can unwind, connect and enjoy themselves, promoting a vibrant and engaged community in Ghana.
KR1: Expand the event to include approximately 100 editors across all regional nodes in Ghana by the next anniversary.
KR2: Achieve a minimum of 80% positive feedback from attendees regarding the event's effectiveness in motivating them to continue being part of the contributor community, in a survey.
KR3: Determine how the party ranks among other retention tactics during KR2 survey
Ghanaian Wikimedian Awards This project is designed to celebrate the achievements of individuals, groups, and projects within the Wikimedia Movement in Ghana.
This year, we launched the maiden edition of the Ghanaian Wikimedia Community Awards, honoring outstanding contributors in five categories. The event was an attestation to their dedication and passion.
Next year, we're hoping to introduce a new category to recognize the efforts of Ghanaian language Wikipedias in Ghana by honorary mention. This is to celebrate the progress of wikis out of incubator, or evident improvement.
Objective: Create a platform where contributors feel valued and celebrated for their contributions.
KR1: Introduce the new category for celebrating a progressing Ghanaian language Wikipedia KR2: Introduce the category to celebrate the most active node
Policy and Advocacy Global Digital Compact This year, our policy and advocacy work will centre around the Global Digital Compact. This paper will highlight our position on the Global Digital Compact, considering that Wikipedia is now a Digital Public Good.
The paper will highlight the importance of free knowledge, internet accessibility, and digital inclusivity, ensuring that national digital policies align with global best practices in open access and public interest technology.
We aim to actively engage with government agencies, civil society organizations, and media partners to promote discussions on digital governance and the role of Wikimedia projects in supporting knowledge equity.
Objective: To influence Ghana’s digital policy landscape by advocating for the recognition of Wikipedia as a Digital Public Good and ensuring national digital policies promote open knowledge. KR1: Develop a policy position paper on the Global Digital Compact KR2: Get the endorsement of about 100 Ghanaian Wikimedians. KR3: Distribute our policy paper to the GDC Working group.
West African Hub Formation The West African Hub aims to serve as a central support structure for the Wikimedia movement in the region by collaborating with both recognized and non-recognized Wikimedia affiliates. It seeks to be a dynamic and inclusive platform that supports the Wikimedia movement's growth in West Africa, amplifies regional representation, and fosters collaboration across affiliates. Objective: The West African Hub will provide structured support, build capacities, and foster collaboration among Wikimedia affiliates in the region to promote open knowledge and inclusivity.

Board The Board has a legal obligation to oversee the organization’s management and ensure that it successfully fulfils its mission. In addition to this oversight role, the Board is responsible for approving the hiring, removal, and management of the Executive Director. It also plays an active role in co-creating the annual grant proposal in collaboration with the community. Furthermore, the Board supports key consultants, including the Accountant, Human Resource personnel, Data Protection Supervisor, and Auditors, ensuring the organization operates efficiently. It also oversees the annual renewal of the nonprofit organization’s status and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements.
Executive Director (vacant) The Wikimedia Ghana User Ghana Executive Director holds a crucial leadership position, acting as the bridge between the board of trustees and the organization's staff and volunteers. The responsibilities are broad and varied, encompassing strategic leadership, operational oversight, and external relations.
Communications Manager (Vacant) The communications Manager is responsible for developing and executing communication strategies. He or she manages external relations and media engagement and promotes programs, activities, and outcomes through various channels.
Program Specialist(s) Specialists will be engaged as needed to provide expertise for specific projects or activities. He or she contributes specialized knowledge to enhance program outcomes.
Data Protection Supervisor/ Contractor/Consultant (vacant) The data protection supervisor will ensure compliance with data protection regulations. The supervisor also monitors data handling processes to safeguard participant privacy. They will provide training and guidance on best practices for data protection. This is also a legal obligation mandated by the Data Protection Act 2012. We have received a request from the authority to hire one or train one.
Finance/Accounting Consultant The Finance/Accounting Consultant is responsible for preparing financial reports and budgets. He oversees financial compliance and transparency. He also offers advice on the effective allocation and utilization of grant funds. He also deals with all Tax obligations we are to deal with under the law governing non-profit management.
Human Resource Consultant (vacant) The board needs support with hiring best practices, navigating labor laws, handling staff transitions, developing an employee handbook to guide day-to-day activities, determining how to foster career development and progression. The board has had to manage staff in an ad hoc manner which might incur regulatory problems in the future. The HR consultant is intended to provide that support as a non-recurring one-year support. Once systems are implemented, we hope the ED will take over Human resource matters.
Auditors The auditor conducts regular audits to ensure accountability. He reviews financial statements and grant expenditure reports and also provides recommendations for financial management improvement. This is a legal obligation we must meet adhere to at all times.

We have established a Wikimedia Ghana UG community space (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Ghana_User_Group/Shared_Community_Resources) that serves as a co-working and event venue for all affiliates and mission-aligned groups in Ghana. These groups can reach out to us, book the space, and utilize it for their activities. For the first time as well we are partnering with the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group to co-organize the Ghanaian Language Wikimedians Meet-Up 2025 which both affiliates are co-funding as well.
We will continue to strengthen our relationship with the Parliament of Ghana, which has supported us in the past by donating images to one of our programs. We plan on getting parliament to be more open and releasing some of its critical documents for free and also licensing their website freely.
In terms of media partners, we have previously worked with several media organizations to promote our programs. For this grant cycle, we aim to deepen these partnerships and enhance our media outreach.
We will also maintain our partnerships with tech hubs nationwide to host workshops and editathons in various regions of Ghana. These ongoing collaborations will help us expand our reach and capacity for hosting events.
At the regional level, we are engaged in discussions with other affiliates regarding the formation of the West African Hub and a potential Sub-Saharan Africa Hub to further strengthen our regional connections and collaboration.
