8. What are your programs, approaches, and strategies? What are the challenges that you are trying to address and how will your strategies support you in addressing these challenges? (required)

Wikimedia Ghana’s programs are designed to address three interconnected challenges: low and uneven participation across regions, persistent content gaps about Ghana and underrepresented groups, and structural barriers that limit who can contribute sustainably. Our strategy combines decentralisation, structured retention pathways, equity-focused interventions, and cultural documentation initiatives to build a resilient contributor ecosystem.

To increase and sustain participation, we operate a regional node model that decentralises recruitment and leadership beyond Accra. Through in-person Wikipedia 101 workshops and structured follow-up editathons, we transform one-time training into relational entry points for long-term engagement. Weekly online editathons create a continuous editing pipeline, ensuring contributors have consistent opportunities to practice, collaborate, and remain active. Recognising Ghana’s mobile-first internet environment, we are adapting training materials to support mobile web editing, reducing technological barriers to entry.

Equity remains central to our approach. Internet data reimbursements are offered as optional support to reduce financial barriers for contributors from low-resource communities, while women-focused campaigns and indigenous language initiatives address gender and linguistic content gaps. Our International Mother Language programming strengthens Twi and Ga projects, improving translation quality and supporting language preservation.

We also invest in community development and leadership sustainability. Through organiser training, node town halls, Wiki Clubs, and national recognition programs, we build local capacity and reinforce intrinsic motivation. Finally, cultural campaigns such as Highlife @ 100 improve the documentation and global visibility of Ghanaian heritage.

Together, these strategies aim to expand access, strengthen retention, reduce inequities, and ensure Wikimedia participation in Ghana is both inclusive and sustainable.

There are specifics in our annual plan (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-OKeRDa8w1MCgsM6wyZ9Ii0OJNNsZCnV6_uUZeWM4UM/edit?usp=drive_link)

11. Describe your team. (required)

Board: The Board has a legal obligation to oversee the organization’s management and ensure that it successfully fulfils its mission. In addition to this oversight role, the Board is responsible for approving the hiring, removal, and management of the Executive Director. It also plays an active role in co-creating the annual grant proposal in collaboration with the community. Furthermore, the Board supports key consultants, including the Accountant, Human Resource personnel, Data Protection Supervisor, and Auditors, ensuring the organization operates efficiently. It also oversees the annual renewal of the nonprofit organization’s status and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements.

Executive Director: The Executive Director is responsible for strategic leadership, operational management, financial oversight, partnership development, and external representation. A key priority of the role is funding diversification. The Executive Director leads efforts to develop, experiment with, and strategically align programs to attract funding beyond the Wikimedia Community General Support Fund, strengthening the organization’s long-term financial sustainability. The role also oversees the development and submission of annual project proposals, budgets, mid-term and final grant reports, and detailed activity work plans. The position is currently vacant. However, an internal succession process is underway to transition a Senior Programs Officer into the role.

Communications Manager – User:PNelson (WMGH) The Communications Manager is responsible for developing and executing WMGH’s communications strategy to strengthen visibility, engagement, and brand positioning. Her key responsibilities include managing and producing content for digital platforms such as social media, newsletters, blog posts, and the organizational website; designing and coordinating the production of visual and written communication materials; and crafting compelling narratives that highlight community achievements, partnerships, and program outcomes. She also handles both internal and external communications efforts, ensuring consistent messaging across stakeholders, and conducts research and analysis to inform data-driven and audience-centered content creation.

Program Specialist(s) Program Specialists Program Specialists are engaged on a project-by-project basis to provide expertise for specific activities. Their involvement varies depending on the focus of the project and the Wikimedia platform in use, ensuring that each program benefits from tailored guidance and support. Among the specialists, User:Robertjamal12 is one of the most consistent contributors.

Data Protection Supervisor/ Contractor/Consultant: The data protection supervisor will ensure compliance with data protection regulations. The supervisor also monitors data handling processes to safeguard participant privacy. They will provide training and guidance on best practices for data protection. This is also a legal obligation mandated by the Data Protection Act 2012. We have received a request from the authority to hire one or train one.

Finance/Accounting Consultant: The Finance/Accounting Consultant is responsible for preparing financial reports and budgets. He oversees financial compliance and transparency. He also offers advice on the effective allocation and utilization of grant funds. He also deals with all Tax obligations we are to deal with under the law governing non-profit management.

Human Resource Consultant: The board needs support with hiring best practices, navigating labor laws, handling staff transitions, developing an employee handbook to guide day-to-day activities, determining how to foster career development and progression. The board has had to manage staff in an ad hoc manner which might incur regulatory problems in the future. The HR consultant is intended to provide that support as a non-recurring one-year support. Once systems are implemented, we hope the ED will take over Human resource matters.

Auditors The auditor conducts regular audits to ensure accountability. He reviews financial statements and grant expenditure reports and also provides recommendations for financial management improvement. This is a legal obligation we must adhere to at all times.

Regional Node Leads- User:Agana Blaise User:Ruky Wunpini User:Elkan21 User: Cliffysarp User: Rorhemaa User: MohammedKM1 User: Blanche Micah-Davis The regional leads coordinate activities within their respective regions in a volunteer capacity and serve as a bridge between the central team and regional communities. They also help in promoting Wikimedia projects and encourage local participation.

Facilitators- Facilitators lead workshops, training sessions, and events, engaging participants to ensure effective learning and providing feedback to improve program design and execution. The facilitators involved vary based on availability and regional considerations; however, the most consistent facilitators are User:Dnshitobu and User:Robertjamal12, who regularly guide sessions and support community engagement across multiple initiatives.

All partners must align with our values of openness, collaboration, and inclusivity, with a commitment to creating and sharing content that contributes to the sum of all human knowledge. Our flagship partnership to ensure equity and capacitate indigenous language growth and preservation is with the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group in the Fourth Edition of the Ghanaian Languages Wikimedia Community MeetUp. Where we will facilitate knowledge sharing between language communities for project partnership and resource sharing and strategising that enable collective growth.

Additional information

[edit]
22. In this optional space you can add any other additional information about your proposal or organization that you think can help us when reviewing your proposal. (optional)

Ghana went through a change of government, which significantly affected our exchange rate. As of last year February, the Ghana Cedi was about 15ghc to 1 in the past 8 mont we have seen relevant stability in the Cedi to dollars. So it will be ideal to look at the cedi portion of the budget instead of the dollar equivalent, which might not tell you the full story of the budget. Thank you.
