Our programs focus on capacity building, content gap bridging, language inclusion, community support, and partnerships. We train new and existing contributors on Wikipedia, Wikidata, Commons, and other projects, with a focus on underrepresented knowledge. Through campaigns such as Art+Feminism, Wiki Loves Africa, and WikiforHumanRights, we address content gaps while partnering with institutions to preserve , improve and share African knowledge. We also promote Swahili and other local languages through translathons and support community engagement through meetups, mentorship, and peer learning. Our strategies are rooted in capacity building, topics of impact and sustainability. We use localized training models tailored to different audiences, hybrid (online and offline) engagement to widen participation, and partnership-driven approaches that integrate Wikimedia projects into universities, and community institutions. We prioritize gender equity, language diversity, and documenting culturally relevant knowledge through Wikimedia platforms. The main challenges we address include: low awareness of Wikimedia projects beyond Wikipedia; underrepresentation of African knowledge, languages, and women’s voices; digital literacy gaps; limited community structures for sustained engagement; and resource barriers for offline communities. Our strategies respond directly to these challenges. Training and mentorship close digital skills gaps; content campaigns amplify African voices and heritage; partnerships provide sustainable pathways for institutional engagement; inclusive practices remove participation barriers; and regular community activities strengthen retention and leadership. Through these programs and strategies, we aim to build a resilient Wikimedia community in Kenya that contributes actively to global knowledge while ensuring African voices are visible, valued, and sustained.
