The Wikimedia Movement is confronting uncertainty after generatie AI technology arises. We need to adapt ourselves to this new environment and research various ways to use AI technology to enhance Wikimedia projects.

Therefore, our next year’s strategies are:

  • Inclusive and healthy community
  • Diverse contents
  • Capacity building
  • and Response to changing online environment

For inclusive and healthy community, we will:

  • support voluntary and productive user activities
  • cultivate a welcoming and safe environment
  • provide support in accordance with user’s life cycle
  • support underrepresented group activities (e.g. women, teenagers, and disabled people)

To support voluntary and productive user activities, we listened to Korean user’s opinions, and developed a new process for voluntary event organization. Through this process, we could support online and offline voluntary events. In the past, we just supported the events financially, but we will provide human support to the organizers next year. For example, the supporter will advise about event organizing, and help to send souvenirs.

To cultivate a welcoming and safe environment, we revived Korean Wikipedia’s old and hard-to-read manuals. Next year, we will research a new form of Wikipedia manual for newcomers by conducting surveys, and launch a project to generate the manuals. They are highly likely to be easy-to-understand videos for newcomers, children, and neurodivergent people. We also hosted the Governance Meetup to deal with administration, policy and technology, and collected the voices of Korean Wikipedia users who are interested in those issues. Based on the opinions, we support development of new tools financially.

In particular, we supported neurodivergent people in cooperation with a disability organization. We employed an enthusiastic neurodivergent person and she promoted our envent for those people. This approach was very successful. We will maintain the approach and extend the collaboration.

For contents diversity, we will

  • reduce systemic bias
  • improve Korean-specific contents
  • enhance professional contents
  • and activate Wikimedia sister projects

We hosted photo walks outside of the Seoul metropolitan area to reduce Wikipedia’s systemic bias, and it was very successful. We will maintain this approach next year, we will provide human and financial resources to improve contents related to local areas out of Seoul.

We will launch projects on not only Korean Wikipedia but also Korean Wikimedia sister projects to enhance Korean-specific contents. For example, we are considering a project where Korean speakers contribute to Korea-related contents on English Wikipedia using generative AI. There are many Korea-related low-quality articles on English Wikipedia, but many Koreans are not fluent English speakers. We think AI technology can help more Koreans to contribute to English Wikipedia articles. We are also planning a project to create and edit Korea-related items on Wikidata.

We hosted many activities targeting women, including Fantisia Editathon, Wiki Gap Editathon, and women-related article editing events, the events targeting women were not successful this year. We think our approach was not effectful, and we need to change it. We will launch activities to attract more women. Because we gathered many women participants, when we hosted events related to art and travel, topics of our events targeting women are highly likely to be art and travel.

For the activation of Wikimedia sister projects, we are continuously launching and organizing novel activities including Old Hangul Document Digitization, and Holiday Challenge Project. We will extend these activities, and explore ways of using OCR (optical character recognition), and generative AI to boost up the activities. For example, we can use the technology to summarize, translate, proofread Wikipedia articles, and find references faster.

For capacity building, we will

  • support member’s voluntary activities
  • and strengthen partnerships

We rented our physical office to set up a base camp for Wikimedia users and Wikimedia Korea members, and we are successfully using it for editathons and offline meetups. We will use the venue to educate Wikimedia users and our members, and collect voices to confront the changing online environment.

We will strengthen our partnership with the National Library of Korea next year. We go further from digitization of Old Hangul documents to modern documents in the public domain. Moreover, we will plan a project to digitize massive documents the library possesses using OCR technology.

We successfully achieved collaborative projects with the Korean Research Center for Guardianship and Trusts, and we will expand the cooperation further. We will enlarge our events to invite more neurodivergent people, and help them settle down on Wikimedia projects safely. The projects will include consecutive editathons, workshops, and photowalks for neurodivergent people and we will also conduct a research on neurodivergent people behavior on Korean Wikimedia projects

These days we attempt to communicate with foreign Wikimedia users and affiliates more frequently. As a result, we could launch some international online editathon events. We will also reinforce international cooperation with other Wikimedia affiliates in East Asia. We will host an international conference where users from Korea, Japan and Taiwan attend. We will share ideas for international collaboration in the event and implement some of them. (It will be covered by Conference Grants)

To confront the changing online environment, we will explore ways to use generative AI to enhance Wikimedia projects. We listened to Wikimedia user’s opinions and planned some pilot projects. Based on them, we will create manuals for generative AI, and launch edit-a-thons and volunteer works using the technology.

Thanks to the foundation's decision, we could start our significant collaboration project with Korean Research Center for Guardianship and Trusts, and support neurodivergent people's activity on Korean Wikimedia projects.

National Library of Korea is also our important partner. They shared scanned old documents with us and supported the promotion of our Wikisource projects. Thanks to the library's help, we could engage more participants than last year.
