Our vision is that people from all around the world, especially Korean-speaking people, share all knowledge developed by human-being and Korea-specific knowledge. To achieve our vision, we established our strategies, and planned our specific activities.

Our main strategies are:

  • Inclusive and healthy community
  • Diverse contents
  • Capacity building, and international collaboration
  • Response to changing online environment

For Inclusive and healthy community, we will:

  • Support voluntary and productive user activities
  • Respond to changing demographic structure
  • Cooperate with a technical community
  • and Educate newcomers and promote Wikimedia philosophy

We think supporting volunteer organizers is more effective for a voluntary and productive community, and it can contribute to the improvement of diverse contents. We will also help users organize small communities for specific topics, such as history, and support their activities including offline meetups and collective online editing.

We also make a continuous effort to support marginalized communities. In particular, our activities for neurodivergent people have been very successful. We hosted offline editing events and photowalks to encourage the neurodivergent people to have interest in Wikimedia activities. This year, we launched a small photowalk event, targeting women neurodivergent people. We need to hold the offline meetups less frequently and host smaller meetups, because some participants feel tired of the monthly repeated meetups.

Engaging newcomers in the community is very important for the sustainable movement. We are planning to launch special editathons for “those who have never edited Wikipedia before.” We will collaborate with some specific groups or use individual networks to reach out to that kind of people.

According to statistics from the Foundation, we can see the number of newly resisted users decrease, and the number of anonymous users increase. In this situation, the Wikimedia community is still run by highly active users; on the other hand, newly registered users and anonymous users are excluded from the operation of the community. We need to analyze user’s activity patterns and consider how to engage the anonymous users in the community.

The Korean Wikipedia’s technical community is maintained by a small number of users, and they are very individual. We will reform our existing supporting programs and focus on technical activities conducted by individual users. We need to build a collaborative community and structure a supporting system in the long term.

There is a possibility that newcomers misunderstand Wikipedia as not an encyclopedia, but a space for writing whatever they want. We think it is very important to educate newcomers on Wikipedia’s fundamental philosophy, and we will create educational resources on the principles, and structured courses on Wikipedia’s policies and guidelines.

For diverse contents, we will:

  • Activate Wikimedia sister projects
  • and Collect diverse contents

Although we have supported Wikimedia sister projects, including Wikisourse, and Wikiquotes for a long time, we need to develop projects with more association between Wikipedia and its sister projects. We saw some successful cases in Wikisource-targeted projects, but there is still a barrier when it comes to Wikidata. For example, it is difficult for non-technical users to understand how to edit Wikidata items. We can provide more detailed manuals to increase the connection between Wikipedia and Wikidata. We can also consider developing a bot for repeated data input when we host events on Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons.

Meanwhile, the Korean Wikisourse community was naturally organized in the wake of our activities and events. Wikisource volunteer organizers planned and hosted creative and productive events to collect modern Korean documents with our financial and human support. We will strengthen communication with the community members and support their voluntary activities.

For capacity building, and international collaboration, we will:

  • Use our office effectively, and support member’s activities
  • and Expand international collaborations

We are renting our office and use it for our regular meetups and offline activities. For example, we regularly host offline editathons for neurodivergent people and discussion meetups for Korean Wikipedia users. We also provide the office to users for free to encourage their voluntary activities.

We are actively engaged in international cooperation in the ESEAP region, by hosting collaborative events with Taiwan (2023), Japan (2024), and Malaysia (2025). In particular, we could significantly boost our Wikipedia Asia Month event, and strengthen friendship between two communities in cooperation with the Japanese Wikimedia community. We will expand our international collaborations and participate in the ESEAP community as a Wikimedia affiliate. We think we have accumulated a lot of experience when it comes to the creation and improvement of contents, and plan to share our experiences with other ESEAP community members. We will also build an international partnership to preserve local traditional cultures.

We also consider hosting international events, such as the ESEAP Summit to promote our position and expand our role in the international community. We are joining other core operating teams to help the organization and gain experiences from it.

These days, the online environment and market is rapidly changing as a result of the rise of generative AI technology. To respond to this change, we will focus on using the technology to enhance the community’s productivity in compliance with the Foundation’s AI strategy. This year, we financially supported individual developers and created manuals on the use of AI-based tools. For example, we supported the development of WikiVault powered by generative AI, and contributed to the improvement of Korean Wikipedia’s productivity. We will maintain this approach next year, and listen to the community’s opinion more carefully. Moreover, we will host an event to discuss Wikipedia’s roles in this changing circumstance. For example, we can talk about how to share more educational and verified information in response to AI-generated content.

We could promote our events for neurodivergent people, and extend partnerships with other neurodivergent groups based on the partnership. We are also working with Estas, a self help group of autistic people, and inviting autistic and neurodivergent people from the groups.
