Part 1: Understanding your work

[edit]

Per the recent update on the Wikimedia Foundation Affiliates Strategy process, Wikimedia Affiliates that are General Support Fund grantees will fulfill their affiliate reporting requirements through their final or yearly grantee report.

If you are a Wikimedia Affiliate, you will use this form for your affiliate reporting and to address the affiliate health criteria. You do not need to submit a separate report to AffCom. Follow the guidance in the green boxes to report on how you met the corresponding affiliate health criteria.

If you are not a Wikimedia Affiliate, aligning your responses with the affiliate criteria is optional and not required.

1. Please share to what extent your programs, approaches, and strategies contributed to addressing the challenges you shared in your proposal. If they did not contribute as you believed they would, please share what obstacles you faced and what, if anything, you learned from them? (required)

For affiliates, use this space (Question 1.) to address Affiliate Health Criterion 1.1 (Goal delivery). Describe how you actively delivered on mission goals, e.g. content creation.

To a large extent, our programs, approaches, and strategies contributed to addressing the challenges we shared in our last proposal.

Challenges shared
Lack of capacity to contribute to Wikimedia projects.
Program, Strategy, Approach

We developed various training and capacity-building program that helped community members build skills and knowledge on how to contribute to Wikimedia projects, including Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, Wikipedia, Wiktionary, and so on. Although, we had planned to have statutory monthly physical training in our office and several online training programs that would include participation from our networks, fan clubs, and partners. We were not able to deliver this as planned because, there were overlaps of programs and we do not have enough staff capcity to manage it. We proposed to have physical trainings in at least two geopolitical zones of Nigeria and numerous trainings in different states of Nigeria to support our growing communities in these states. But we were able to implement one physical training in the Northern Nigeria and participants from neibouring states joined us in Kano. To address the lack of capacity to contribute to Wikimedia projects, we carried out the following programs and the strategy and approach discribed below:

Challenges shared
  • Low contents from Nigeria
Programs, Strategy and approach

Low contents from Nigeria is one of the identified challenges. We had plan to organise several contents drives that would help create thousands of high-quality contents on Wikimedia projects, and numerous edit-a-thons would be organised to generate contents. In addition to text-based contents, we had planned to continue with the creation of oral history audiovisuals and donate them to academic institutions. These were all implemented as proposed.

The Wiki Imagine Lagos Project

Community support fund
The Nigeria Community Micro-Grant session at Wikimania 2025

The Community Support Funds (CSF) is a program designed by Wikimedia User Group Nigeria to support Nigerian mission-aligned organisations, individual members of the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria, networks & fan clubs, organised group contributing to any Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia, Wikidata, or Wikimedia Commons – to organise projects throughout the year with a budget of NGN 50,000 up to NGN 450,000.From February to December 2025, the Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation continued to respond to the open knowledge needs of the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria communities and its unprecedented threat to the critical gains we have made in the last fiscal year.At the same time, we witnessed the unlimited potential of our funded projects in closing the cultural gap within the Wikimedia projects. From the swift implementation of new financial scope to adopting our new strategy for the new fiscal year, the Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation continues to make important advances across the partnership to fight the limitations to open knowledge and respond to current and future challenges.

The 2025 Financial Report provides the Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation's financial statements, reflecting an effective and prudent use of resources to support programs within the country. In this cycle, we pressed ahead with the fight against open-knowledge illiteracy. In the year under review, we demonstrated how our continued investments in resilient and sustainable systems for open knowledge could support communities and individuals in the fight against open knowledge illiteracy and respond to new challenges in promoting the work of the Wikimedia Foundation.

This year under review, a total of three hundred and ten (310) (as opposed to the two hundred and nine (209) proposals submitted last fiscal year) proposals were submitted for funding from the community. These projects cut across thirty-four (34) states (including the FCT) and all six (6) geo-political zones in Nigeria. The proposals were from both individuals and Networks/clubs. Of these three hundred and ten proposals, one hundred and thirty-seven (137) projects were accepted for funding after meeting every criterion set aside by the Grant Committee after days of personal scrutiny and hours of extensive deliberations. Thus, forty-four per cent (44 %) of the submitted proposals were funded. In the past fiscal year (2024), only 39% of applications were funded. The CSF distributed 38,360,000 NGN to Wikimedians across 34 states and the federal capital territory in 2025. 20,068,000 NGN was used to sponsor individual Wikimedia projects, while 18,292,000 NGN was distributed among our registered networks and fan clubs.

Key Outcomes
  • 137 projects were funded, from 310 applications (a 44% approval rate)
  • 34 states and the federal capital territory received our funding*2,381 editors registered for our funded projects
  • 4,962 new items created on Wikidata
  • 1,009 articles created on Wikipedia (English, Fulfulde, Igbo, Hausa & Yoruba)*7,834 articles edited on Wikipedia
  • 15,115 uploads on Commons, with 1,317 uploads used on Wikipedia articles and 1,566 used across all Wikis
  • 38,360,000 NGN disbursed to the Wikimedia community in Nigeria

7. What, if any, effective tactics or approaches can you share that worked well when dealing with the programs under points 6.1-6.3 that you selected? (optional)

In the past, the activities of Wikimedia User Group Nigeria were largely concentrated in Lagos State, resulting in limited national reach. Implementing activities in other regions of the country was challenging due to the absence of active representatives and established community structures in many states.

Although Wiki Fan Clubs existed in some tertiary institutions, their activities were mostly confined to campus-based engagements, such as edit-a-thons, with limited outreach beyond the university environment.

This gap was addressed through the establishment and strengthening of Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Networks across the country. These networks are now active in several regions of Nigeria, enabling the decentralization of activities and fostering broader community participation. The expansion has significantly improved the implementation of programs at the local level and has contributed positively to community growth, engagement, and long-term sustainability.

8. If you developed partnerships, which of the following factors most helped you to build partnerships? Please pick a MAXIMUM of the three most relevant factors (optional):

Permanent staff outreach, Staff hired through the fund, Volunteers from our communities, Partners proactive interest
