Wikimedia Tanzania

Based on our experience running Wiki trainings on knowledge contribution to Wikipedia, below are the main challenges that we are keen to address;

The challenges we are trying to address: Overview: The challenges we are seeking to address mostly centers on knowledge gaps, gender gaps, leadership gaps and technological aspects. These challenges are are as explained below: Lack of adequate skills needed for contributing to Wiki projects Lack of high quality content to our local Wikipedia and on larger Wikipedias such as English Wikipedia. Similarly there is a huge gap quantitatively when it comes to the number of content on our local Wiki projects (such as Swahili Wikipedia, Wikistionery and Wikisource) when compared to similar other languages Wiki projects. Lack of reliable, collaborative and consistent Wiki contributors and Community leaders that can help to make our movement sustainable. Lack of projects that are community tailored that can help generate relevant content to our communities Lack of partners that can support and help to amplify what we do Lack of Tech oriented contributors who can help solve technical challenges that our contributors face while interacting with Wiki platforms such as Swahili Wikipedia Some areas in Tanzania aren’t reached with our efforts to engage them to become Wiki contributors. Lack of reliable sources that can be used to amplify our efforts to bridge the gender gap existing in Swahili WIkipedia and on other Wiki projects. Programs: This application intends to increase the availability of free content to Wikimedia projects through focusing on the topics of impact that are primarily relevant to Tanzania and Africa.These topics include (Healthy, Geography, Gender, Environment and Human rights). Also this grant application seeks to provide continuity of the already existing projects that have been done before by the user group, as well as expanding the reachability of the Wikimedia projects within Tanzania. On the other hand the proposal seeks to enhance the regional and global collaboration areas including Regional Hubs, GLAM, Heritage and Technology.

Approaches We are aiming to make our programs more impactful, more inclusive and improve its learning, evaluation and reporting. We are planning to engage learning and evaluation projects and expertise to help us build the capacity to be able to evaluate the impact of our projects both qualitatively and quantitatively. This will be possible by adopting and learning about some existing qualitative and quantitative tools used within the movement with the help of insights from the Wikimedian within the movement that has expertise in those areas and better advise our user group on the strategic actions to achieve our goals. We are intending to purposely increase the number of Women participating in our programs so as to empower them to take different leadership roles. On all those categories of activities, we are planning to do editathoths, workshops, hackathons and contests that aim to increase the content in our local wiki projects. We will evaluate and set some standards and criteria in order to obtain high quality contributions.

Strategies: We are planning to create more room for capacity building on leadership and governance. This will help us to have segmentation of the list of programs that we need to implement. We will design a leadership structure for our user group that will be capable of facilitating and coordinating various projects such as editathons, workshops and hackathons. We will do outreach programs to at least 7 regions/areas of Tanzania that have not yet been reached in terms of capacity building to contribute to Wikipedia. This includes Zanzibar, Mtwara, Mbeya, Mwanza, Morogoro, Dodoma and Iringa. We will initiate Wiki Clubs in different Institutions both public and private ones found in areas mentioned above to ensure sustainability of people who contribute to Wikipedia. We aim at having micro-grant that will help to support emerging communities to exercise editing and content contributing skills.

How will your strategies support you in addressing these challenges? We are looking to conduct the following activities that will address the challenges outlined above. We are planning to have weekly editathons for Wiki community residing in Dar es salaam We will run at least 20 capacity building trainings to wiki groups from these new 6 regions and in Dar es salaam We are planning to have at least 4 leaders boot camps (1 every after 3 months) that will help us empower more volunteers to become reliable leaders We are planning to coordinate and plan for activities that are regional wise in our country to ensure inclusivity and reachability of our programs. Moreover we will have programs that will run regional wise in SADC countries starting with EARTH Hub member countries.

Wikimedia Arusha

We have organized our work around six key goals that help us tackle specific challenges in our community. Our programs, approaches, and strategies around six key goals outlined in our strategic plan. (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1PiIC1bqdNars27zTiT3p6GDsgycFEP8k/view?usp=sharing) Here is a brief overview of each goal and its associated strategies: Goal 1 Expand Content Coverage Programs and Approaches: Swahili Month,Wikipedia Page Wanting Photos Arusha, WikiVibrance – International Youth Day, Months of African Cinema,WikiVibrance – African Youth Month, 1lib1ref, Arts & Folklore, WikiGap, WikiforHumanRightsCampaign, Photowalks Challenges Addressed: Limited content coverage on Wikimedia projects. Strategies: Conduct events and initiatives to promote the creation of high-quality, underrepresented content. Raise awareness about community efforts to increase content coverage. We are launching the Tanzanian Languages Oral History Documentation Project to preserve over 120 local languages at risk of extinction. Through audiovisual recordings, we will document endangered languages like Maasai, Meru, and Arusha, creating free archives on Wikimedia Commons and enriching Wikipedia articles. This project preserves vulnerable cultural heritage, fills content gaps, raises awareness about indigenous languages, promotes local cultural institutions, and helps grow our editor community while connecting language experts with Wikimedia. It directly supports our content expansion goals while addressing urgent language preservation needs in Tanzania. Goal 2 Grow and Engage the Community Programs and Approaches: Annual Community Meeting Challenges Addressed: Need for community growth and increased engagement. Strategies: Provide opportunities for members to participate in meaningful activities. Collaborate with other groups and organizations to increase the size and diversity of the community. Goal 3 Strengthen Capacities Programs and Approaches: Training the Trainers Program Let's Connect Challenges Addressed: Build the skills and capacities of community members. Strategies: Provide training and development opportunities. Develop educational resources and tutorials. Foster leadership and mentorship opportunities. Learn from established Wikimedia communities and incorporate best practices. Goal 4 Address the Gender Gap Programs and Approaches: Women in Wiki Training, Write for African Women Project Challenges Addressed: Gender gap in participation and representation. Strategies: Organize events and initiatives to increase women's participation. Amplify voices and perspectives of women in the community. Encourage and support women in leadership roles. Goal 5 Build Strategic Partnerships Programs and Approaches: Sustain the current partnerships Identify Potential Partners Reach Out to Potential Partners Attend Relevant Events and Conferences Collaborate on Joint Projects Share Resources and Expertise Challenges Addressed: Need for external support and collaboration. Strategies: Identify and engage with organizations that share the community's vision. Establish collaborations with partners to support community growth and impact. Goal 6 Raise Awareness and Promote Inclusiveness Programs and Approaches: Develop Educational Resources, Tutorials, and Mentorship Opportunities Conduct Outreach Activities Empower Community Members Monitor and Measure Progress Challenges Addressed: Limited awareness and inclusiveness in the community. Strategies: Provide training and mentorship opportunities. Conduct outreach activities to engage underrepresented communities. Promote a culture of inclusiveness and diversity. Monitor and measure efforts to promote inclusiveness. Program and approaches Community Hub: The Community Hub is a dedicated physical space equipped with essential resources such as electricity, internet connectivity, and laptops. It operates as an open and welcoming environment, accessible to community members at their convenience, facilitating contributions to Wikimedia projects. Challenges Addressed: The lack of resources for editors beyond scheduled events was identified as a significant challenge. Newly elected Wikipedia administrators and highly active Wikimedians expressed their willingness to contribute beyond events but faced constraints due to the unavailability of resources, including the internet and computers. Creative Solution: To overcome this challenge, the Wikimedians of Arusha established an open office space, functioning as a hub for community members. This space provides consistent access to the internet and laptops, enabling editors to contribute to Wikimedia projects at any time. Importantly, this solution not only addresses the resource constraints but also ensures compliance with government regulations. The open office concept has proven successful, attracting many community members and positioning Wikimedia Arusha's editors among the most active contributors across Tanzania.

Providing ongoing mentorship to new and existing contributors to ensure they feel supported and valued. Using Let Connect as a platform for collaboration and knowledge-sharing among leaders across Tanzanian Wikimedia communities. 4. Challenge: Limited Collaboration Among Wikimedia Communities in Tanzania Why it Matters: Fragmentation among Wikimedia communities in Tanzania can lead to duplication of efforts and missed opportunities for collaboration. Our Strategy:

Hosting quarterly Let's Connect events to bring together leaders from Wikimedia Community User Group Tanzania Jenga Wikipedia ya Kiswahili, University Students Wikimedia, wiki medians of Arusha, and other entities. Organizing joint events and knowledge-sharing sessions to strengthen impact and avoid duplication.

5. Challenge: Limited Awareness and Engagement in Wikimedia Projects Why It Matters: Many potential contributors are unaware of Wikimedia projects or lack the skills to participate effectively, limiting the growth and impact of the community. Our Strategy: Conducting outreach campaigns to recruit new volunteers, especially targeting women, youth, and underrepresented groups. Partnering with schools, universities, and cultural institutions to promote Wikimedia projects and provide training on how to contribute. Advocating for digital literacy and open knowledge in the Kilimanjaro region through workshops, seminars, and community events. Leveraging social media and local media to raise awareness about Wikimedia projects and their impact on free knowledge. Organizing public events such as photo walks, edit-a-thons, and writing contests to engage the wider community and showcase the value of Wikimedia contributions. How Our Strategies Support Addressing These Challenges Focused Content Creation: By prioritizing Swahili content through initiatives like Wiki Monthly Edit-a-thons and the There Is an Error, Fix and Contribute Campaign, we address the knowledge gap for Swahili-speaking communities, making Wikipedia more accessible and relevant. Wikimedia Tanzania:Yes we have some partners that we have worked with before and we will engage more with them. These include the Creative Commons Chapter of Tanzania, ASSAT-Tanzania Astronomy Association, St. Augustine University of Mwanza , Buni Innovation Hub and University of Dar es Salaam.

Wikimedians of Arusha Our work grows stronger through teamwork. We are joining hands with Wikimedia and other partners who believe in what we do. Local libraries will share their special collections with us, helping put more diverse information on Wikimedia. We are also connecting with colleges to bring in new editors who can add fresh perspectives. Museums and art galleries are perfect friends for us too. They have amazing collections that more people should see. Community groups will help us reach people who do not usually get involved with Wikipedia. We are really happy about our new education partners in Tanzania. Working with Elimu Yetu, Umoja, Tanzania Enlightenment Development Innovations, Arusha Youth Hub, and Tengeru Institute of Community will help us share knowledge better with local people. These groups know their communities well and understand what people really need. Our current partners have already helped us so much. Builders for Future Africa has guided us through government rules - without them, we would be lost in paperwork. And working with Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation has helped more people hear about what we are doing. These partnerships are real relationships based on trust and shared goals.

Peer Review strateg approach: With this proposal, we we deliberately want to see high quality articles/content produced. Hence one of the methos we will use is having several peer review sessions to reflect improve the content contributed. We foresee that this will be helpful to newbies who will benefit from seeing how articles are judged to be quality vs not quality. This will help them avoid common mistakes that lead to producing too short and sometimes long but not quality content. 5000

Additional information

[edit]
22. In this optional space you can add any other additional information about your proposal or organization that you think can help us when reviewing your proposal. (optional)

Our user group has taken some great efforts fostering collaboration and cohesion within East Africa. Some of the active engagements includes great effort and participation on forming East African Regional and Thematic Hub. Moreover, our user group has been actively engaging in global spaces and initiatives, hence this proposal is important for community members to pick up on the best learning we have obtained through those spaces and implement in our context. Key learnings from the past 3 years is that Community health is promising when people are given a chance and supported to meet frequently and engage on Wiki projects. This is as for many communities, important that we maintain the flow of activities and initiatives to create a greater chance of Volunteer retention.
