- Yoruba Wikimedians User Group Multiyear Grant 2026-2028
- 2. Do you want to apply for the multi-year base funding for 3 years? (required) (only for returning applicants)
- Yes
- 2.1. Provide a brief overview of Year 2 and Year 3 of the proposed plan and how this relates to the current proposal and your strategic plan? (required)
During the second and third years, the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group will transition from foundational program delivery to a phase of structured expansion and institutional strengthening. Having established core activities and community structures in the first year (See the annual plan), the subsequent phase will prioritize consolidation, innovation, and long-term resilience in alignment with the group’s strategic direction. A primary focus will be on promoting free knowledge in Yoruba language through Yoruba Wikipedia and its sister projects. Rather than merely increasing content volume, priority will be placed on thematic depth, sourcing quality or standards, and culturally significant documentation. Targeted campaigns will address underrepresented topics in Yoruba language, history, and contemporary issues, while experienced editors will be engaged in coordinated quality improvement programs. Community development will also progress into a more structured phase. Advanced skill-building workshops, peer-learning cohorts, and leadership pipelines will be introduced to nurture emerging organizers and regular contributors. This approach ensures continuity, sustainability, reduces dependency on a small group of volunteers, and strengthens internal governance systems and structures. Additionally, the User Group will expand its outreach across Yoruba-speaking states or regions of Nigeria by building a strategic partnership with academic institutions, cultural institutions, relevant government agencies and digital innovation hubs. Existing partnerships will evolve into more formal collaborations with clearer objectives and deliverables, while new partnerships will diversify programmatic and financial support. By the conclusion of the third year, the objective is to have a more decentralized, skilled, and regionally connected community capable of sustaining growth independently. This forward-looking approach reflects our commitment to quality improvement, community empowerment, institutional partnerships, and inclusive regional engagement, ensuring that the progress achieved in the first year translates into lasting impact beyond even the third year.

1. Capacity-building and skills development
- Recruit Readers as writers
Recruit Readers as writers is a monthly capacity-building program that will be delivered through a combination of offline and online training sessions to support and empower new editors. The program aims to equip participants with the necessary practical skills required to contribute effectively to Yoruba Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. Through structured training, hands-on editing sessions, and guided mentorship, Recruit Readers as writers will introduce participants to the basics of Wikipedia editing and how to contribute to other Wikimedia projects including Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. The program will also provide support to help new editors transition from beginners to active and productive contributors. Recruit Readers as writers will serve as a sustainable onboarding program for new editors, strengthening their retention, improving Articles quality, and fostering long-term community growth within the Yoruba Wikimedia ecosystem.
- YorubaWiki MasterClass Program
The YorubaWiki MasterClass is an advanced skills and capacity-building program designed for experienced and intermediate editors of Yoruba Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. Unlike introductory training like the Train the Newbie 1.0, the MasterClass focuses on deepening participants’ skills in Articles creation, editing, research, and community leadership, enabling them to contribute high-quality to Yoruba Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. The program will combine interactive online sessions, hands-on offline workshops, and mentorship, with opportunities for participants to lead collaborative projects, solve Articles gaps, and engage with the broader Wikimedia community. YorubaWiki MasterClass is part of the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group’s efforts to strengthen Articles quality, community leadership, and long-term sustainability.
2. Community Growth and Editors Retention
- Recruit readers as writer program
One of the challenges facing small language Wikipedia is low contributions by native speakers. The Recruit readers as writers (RRW) was first experimented in 2021 by the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group to support and promote the growth of contributors to Yoruba Wikipedia. The scope of this project focuses on using the Central Notice banner to recruit volunteers for Yoruba Wikipedia. A central notice banner will be hosted on the English Wikipedia, and a simple form will be attached to the banner and Wikipedia readers from Nigeria who are native speakers of Yoruba Language will be encouraged to complete the form and participate in a training on how to contribute to the Yoruba language Wikipedia. The Central Notice Banner will only be visible to visitors who are not registered on any Wikimedia project (logged out users only).
- Mentorship and Buddy Program
One of the major challenges affecting Wikimedia community growth and editor retention on Wikimedia projects is the early drop-off of new contributors due to limited guidance, confidence gaps, and unfamiliarity with community norms and editing standards. The Mentorship and Buddy Program is designed to address this challenge by providing structured, personalized support to new editors within the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group. Through a peer-to-peer mentoring approach, new contributors are paired with experienced editors who guide them through their early editing journey, help resolve challenges, and foster a sense of belonging within the community.
- Campus & Community Ambassador Program
The concentration of Yoruba Wikimedia activities in a few urban centers and institutions has limited the growth and sustainability of the Yoruba Wikipedia. The Campus & Community Ambassador Program is designed to decentralize Yoruba Wikimedia activities by empowering selected volunteers to serve as ambassadors within their campuses and local communities. These ambassadors will act as community focal points, leading outreach, training, and engagement activities that introduce new contributors to Wikimedia projects, particularly Yoruba Wikipedia, while fostering sustained participation and local ownership.
- ICanLead
- Leadership & Facilitator Development Program
Sustainable community growth of the Yoruba Wikimedia Communities requires more than active contributors; it depends on the availability of capable leaders, trainers, and facilitators who can guide others and coordinate activities. The #ICanLead program is designed to identify, train, and empower active members of the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group to take on leadership and facilitation roles within the community. This program aims to reduce over-reliance on a small group of organizers, or the same set of organizers and promote shared responsibility and ensure the long-term sustainability of the Yoruba Wikimedia community.
- Community and Membership Register
Effective community growth and sustainability depend on accurate knowledge of who community members are, where they are located, and how they engage with activities. The Community and Membership Register is designed to establish and maintain a structured, up-to-date database of members of the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group. This register will support better coordination, targeted engagement, inclusive participation, and long-term community planning, while respecting data protection and privacy standards.
- Ìràwọ̀Yorùbá
- Recognition & Motivation Program
The growth and sustainability of Yoruba Wikipedia depend heavily on the dedication and consistency of its volunteer contributors. However, sustained engagement requires deliberate efforts to recognize and appreciate contributors whose work strengthens Yoruba Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. The #Ìràwọ̀Yorùbá program is designed to celebrate, motivate, and retain contributors to Yoruba Wikipedia by acknowledging their efforts, milestones, and impact. Through structured recognition, the program aims to reinforce a culture of appreciation, pride in contributions to Yoruba Wikipedia, and long-term commitment to it and other Wikimedia projects.
3. Articles Quality Improvement
- Gegearamada
One of the critical challenges facing Yoruba Wikipedia is the prevalence of stub articles, incomplete content, and inconsistent quality of articles. The #Gegearamada is designed to close this gap by systematically enhancing the quality of existing articles. The program focuses on improving accuracy, structure, readability, referencing, and cultural relevance of Yoruba Wikipedia articles. Through structured training, peer support, and collaborative editing, #Gegearamada aims to raise the overall standard of content, making Yoruba Wikipedia a more reliable and informative resource for native speakers and the global community.
- AtúnṣeWiki
- Peer Review & Copyediting Program
A key factor in ensuring the credibility and readability of Yoruba Wikipedia is language quality and editorial consistency. Many articles, particularly those created by new editors, contain grammatical errors, inconsistent orthography, or unclear phrasing, which can reduce reader engagement and trust. The #AtúnṣeWiki: Peer Review & Copyediting Program is designed to strengthen article quality through a structured peer review and copyediting system. Through collaborative review, mentorship, and practical workshops, this program aims to enhance contributors’ writing and editing skills, ensuring that Yoruba Wikipedia articles are accurate, clear, and professionally presented.
- ÀwọnAyokaPataki
- Priority Topics Improvement Program
Yoruba Wikipedia plays a vital role in preserving and disseminating knowledge about Yoruba history, culture, language, and other contemporary topics. However, many high-impact and culturally significant topics remain underdeveloped, outdated, or poorly sourced. The #ÀwọnAkóónúPataki is designed to improve the quality and depth of articles on topics of strategic importance to the Yoruba people.
4. Campaigns and Contest
- Wiki Loves Yoruba Culture - Photography Contest
The Yoruba people possess a rich cultural heritage expressed through festivals, attire, architecture, food, art, spirituality, and everyday life. However, much of this heritage remains underrepresented on Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia, limiting global access to freely licensed visual documentation of Yoruba culture. Wiki Loves Yoruba Culture is a regional photography contest designed to document and showcase the diverse cultural expressions of Yoruba communities across Southwestern Nigeria. The campaign aims to encourage photographers and community members to contribute high-quality, freely licensed images that can be used to enrich Yoruba Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, while also promoting cultural preservation and community participation.
- Wiki Loves Yoruba Culture - Writing Contest
Yoruba culture is rich in history, language, traditions, and contemporary expressions, yet many aspects remain underrepresented or insufficiently documented on Wikipedia. Wiki Loves Yoruba Culture - Article Writing Contest is designed to close these gaps by encouraging contributors to create and improve high-quality articles related to Yoruba culture. In addition to content creation, the contest also serves as a strategic effort to ensure effective use of freely licensed images contributed during the Wiki Loves Yoruba Culture - Photography Contest by integrating them into relevant Wikipedia articles. This combined approach aims to strengthen both textual and visual representation of Yoruba culture on Wikimedia projects, while engaging new and existing editors in structured content creation and improvement.
- Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos 2026
Many articles on Yoruba Wikipedia lack images, particularly those covering Yoruba history, culture, festivals, landmarks, and biographies. This reduces engagement and limits the educational value of the encyclopedia. Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos 2026 is a targeted campaign aimed at closing this gap by identifying articles without images and encouraging contributors to upload or use relevant, freely licensed photographs. The campaign also ensures that images contributed during other programs, such as Wiki Loves Yoruba Culture, are used in relevant articles, improving both visual quality and cultural documentation.
- Wikipedia 26 – Cake Baking Contest
To celebrate Wikipedia’s 26th anniversary, the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group will combine creativity, community engagement, and culture through the Wikipedia 26 Cake Baking Contest. This contest encourages participants to bake cakes inspired by Wikipedia’s themes, Yoruba culture, or the Wikimedia movement, and document the process with high-quality photographs or short descriptions. The contest not only celebrates the milestone but also provides a fun, visual, and shareable way to promote Wikipedia, engage community members, and create content for Yoruba Wikipedia articles about food, celebrations, and cultural practices.
5. GLAM and Institutional Partnership
- Yoruba Storytelling Event - 3rd Edition
Storytelling is an integral aspect of Yoruba culture, serving as a medium for preserving history, morals, folklore, and language. The 3rd Edition of the Yoruba Storytelling Event is organized by the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group in partnership with the J. Randle Centre for Yorùbá Culture & History. The event seeks to celebrate, document, and share Yoruba oral traditions. Combining live storytelling sessions with digital documentation, this event ensures that Yoruba narratives are preserved, widely accessible, and integrated into open knowledge platforms. The Yoruba Storytelling Event is being organized as part of the group’s Yoruba oral traditions projects.
- Yoruba Oral Traditions
Yoruba oral tradition is a rich and integral part of the cultural heritage of the Yoruba people, an ethnic group in West Africa, particularly Nigeria, Benin, and Togo. Rooted in a centuries-old history, Yoruba oral tradition serves as a dynamic means of communication through which knowledge, art, ideas, and cultural materials are passed down orally from one generation to the next. The Yoruba Oral Tradition Project is a project designed and implemented by the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group to document and preserve Yoruba oral traditions. Yoruba oral tradition is a multifaceted and dynamic form of communication that has been instrumental in preserving the cultural, historical, and religious identity of the Yoruba people. Through oral narratives, songs, and other forms of storytelling, the Yoruba continue to pass on their rich heritage from one generation to another, demonstrating the enduring power of oral tradition in maintaining cultural continuity. This project will be done in partnership with Lagos State University, and Adekunle Ajasin University, Ondo State. The material generated will be donated to academic institutions and cultural institutions.
- International Mother Language Day Celebration
International Mother Language Day, observed annually on 21st February, highlights the importance of linguistic and cultural diversity. The Yoruba Wikipedia User Group, in collaboration with the International Centre for Yoruba Arts and Culture and the DAWN Commission, organizes this event to celebrate the Yoruba language and promote its preservation through Wikimedia projects. The event combines awareness campaigns, educational sessions, and content creation activities to encourage community participation and strengthen the visibility of Yoruba heritage online.
6. Public Policy and Advocacy
- Advocacy for Wikipedia Integration into Nigeria’s National Digital Literacy Framework
Nigeria’s National Digital Literacy Framework (NDLF) was developed to equip citizens with essential digital skills through partnerships with organizations like Nigeria Internet Governance Forum, Civil Society Organizations, Coursera and Pearson. However, a critical gap exists: current government digital literacy initiatives rarely leverage Wikipedia or open knowledge platforms as tools for learning, civic engagement, or content creation. Consequently, learners are missing opportunities to develop practical digital skills, contribute to freely accessible knowledge, and participate in preserving and sharing local culture and heritage. To close this gap, the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group will implement an advocacy program to integrate Wikipedia editing, free knowledge awareness, and open content practices into the NDLF. This will empower youth, educators, and communities to use Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects for digital skills development, cultural preservation, and civic participation, while strengthening Nigeria’s presence in global open knowledge platforms. Our effort in this area is already covered in the National Dailies, the Guardian Newspaper and Daily Independent Newspaper

7. Awareness Campaign
- Yoruba WikiRadio Program
One of the major challenges facing the Yoruba Wikipedia is the lack of public awareness. While many Nigerians are familiar with the globally recognized English Wikipedia, a significant number remain unaware that Wikipedia exists in other languages, including Yoruba. This limited awareness affects readership, community participation, and overall growth of the Yoruba-language knowledge ecosystem. The WikiRadio Program is designed as a strategic outreach initiative to promote the Yoruba Wikipedia through a major radio station in Nigeria. Radio remains one of the most accessible and influential media platforms in the country, with broad reach across urban and rural communities. The program will run weekly for 24 weeks (6 months). Each episode will feature engaging discussions about interesting facts, featured articles, notable contributors, and the impact of the Yoruba Wikipedia community. A key segment of the show will be an interactive quiz session where listeners will be required to visit the Yoruba Wikipedia to find answers and call in to respond. Winners will receive gifts at the end of each program.
- Skit for Yoruba Wikipedia
The “Skit for Yoruba Wikipedia” project is a creative awareness campaign designed to promote the Yoruba Wikipedia through short, engaging dramatic performances (skits). This project will use culturally relevant storytelling, humor, and relatable everyday scenarios to introduce audiences to the Yoruba Wikipedia. The skits will demonstrate how individuals, students, teachers, traders, and young people, can access information in Yoruba, and contribute knowledge freely to Wikimedia projects. The performances will be recorded and shared across social media platforms and other digital channels to maximize reach and engagement. Through creative media, this initiative aims to connect with a broader audience, particularly youth and social media users, and inspire them to explore and contribute to the Yoruba Wikipedia. The program was originally implemented in August 2022. The next year, Yoruba Wikipedia became the most-read Nigerian language edition of Wikipedia, attracting more than 25 million readers. In addition to this significant readership growth, the promotional video also attracted 60 new editors, who created accounts on the day it was released on social media. We want to sustain that effort to boost readership.
