[edit]Wikimedia Metrics
[edit]- 14. Please select and fill out Wikimedia Metrics for your proposal. (recommended)
- 14.1. Number of participants, editors, and organizers.
All metrics provided are optional, please fill them out if they are aligned with your programs and activities.
| Metrics name | Target | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Number of all participants | 300 | Our target of engaging 300 unique participants is a strategic estimate derived from the various types of activities outlined in our 2026 plan. We differentiate between deep, capacity-building engagement and broader public participation to provide a realistic and meaningful metric. Our calculation is based on the following breakdown:
1. Deep Engagement - Capacity-Building Programme (Approx. 200 unique participants): This is the core of our community-building effort. It includes participants in our structured online and in-person workshops and courses. We plan to run over 20 distinct training sessions throughout the year. While the total number of "seats" in these workshops is higher (estimated around 350), we conservatively estimate an overlap of attendees, leading to a target of approximately 200 unique individuals who will receive direct, in-depth training in areas ranging from technical skills to DEI principles. This group represents the core community we are actively empowering. 2. Community Engagement - In-Person Activities (Approx. 50 unique participants): This category includes participants in our more open, practical events: Quarterly Photowalks: We anticipate engaging approximately 15-20 people per event across four planned photowalks. We estimate this will involve around 50 unique participants over the year, serving as a key entry point for new members. Expeditions: Each of our major expeditions will include at least one contest winner. While the core team is not counted here, these 3-4 high-engagement spots for contest winners represent a significant form of deep participation. |
| Number of all editors | 250 | Broad Engagement (Contests): We project 250 total editors will participate, with the majority coming from our high-visibility online contests (Wiki Loves Earth, Birds, Folklore). These campaigns are excellent for outreach and are expected to bring in approximately 100 new editors (newly registered users).
Focused Retention Strategy: We have set a deliberate and realistic target of retaining 20 editors. We recognize that volunteer retention within the Wikimedia environment is a significant and well-documented challenge. The technical learning curve and the scale of the projects can make it difficult for newcomers to find a sustained sense of belonging after a single event. Our retention strategy is therefore not passive. It is an active process focused on the participants of our most intensive activities: the capacity-building workshops and field expeditions. By providing these individuals with advanced skills, a supportive community, and clear projects, we aim to convert their initial interest into a long-term connection. Furthermore, it is important to understand the contribution pattern of a photographer versus a traditional text-based editor. A photographer's contributions may be more sporadic but highly impactful across the entire Wikimedia ecosystem. A single, high-quality, and well-described photograph uploaded to Wikimedia Commons does not just illustrate one article. It becomes a foundational piece of knowledge that can be used to: Enrich dozens of Wikipedia articles across multiple languages. Serve as the primary visual identifier for an item on Wikidata, providing a machine-readable link that connects it to the entire web of linked data. Be used to create educational materials and courses on Wikiversity. Illustrate travel guides on Wikivoyage. Be integrated into countless other free-knowledge projects, both inside and outside Wikimedia. Therefore, our goal is to retain a core group of 20 highly skilled visual contributors. Their periodic, high-impact uploads provide significant and sustained value that radiates throughout the entire free knowledge ecosystem. We measure retention by tracking the on-wiki activity of this specific cohort one month after our activities have concluded. |
| Number of new editors | 100 | |
| Number of retained editors | 20 | |
| Number of all organizers | 50 | Our target for organizers reflects our commitment to a distributed and collaborative leadership model, which is essential for our agile workflow and for the long-term sustainability of our group.
Total Organizers (50): Our goal is to involve 50 unique organizers throughout the 2026 grant cycle. This number is based on our core group of 40 active collaborators, who all participate in the organization of our activities to some degree, from planning expeditions to facilitating workshops or serving as jury members for our contests. In addition to this core, we aim to bring in new organizers. New Organizers (10): A central goal of our capacity-building programme is to identify and empower new leaders within the community. Our target is to actively onboard 10 new organizers. This is not a passive hope; it is a direct objective of our "Training: Female Leadership in the Wikimedia Movement" and "Inclusive Leadership" workshops. Our "Volunteer Journey" Strategy: We will identify promising and engaged participants from our workshops and photowalks and invite them to take on small, supported organizational roles. For example, a participant from a photowalk in Q1 might be invited to help co-organize the next one in Q3. Participants from our leadership workshops will be explicitly encouraged and mentored to lead a new initiative or take on a formal role. Measuring New Organizers: A "new organizer" is defined as a person who, after participating in one of our training activities, takes on a documented role in organizing a subsequent event (e.g., being listed as a co-organizer on a Meta page, leading a photowalk, managing a social media campaign for a contest). This ensures our metric is tied to concrete actions, not just interest. This dual focus on leveraging our experienced core team while actively cultivating new leadership is fundamental to our strategy for building a resilient and scalable community. |

- Description for Wikimedia projects contributions metrics. (optional)
Our content targets are a direct, data-driven forecast based on the specific success metrics of the activities outlined in our 2026 plan. Our strategy prioritizes high-impact contributions on platforms where our audiovisual expertise provides the most value: Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata.
Wikimedia Commons (10,000 files uploaded / 500 improved): This is our primary deliverable, directly addressing the critical lack of audiovisual content. This target is derived from the combined minimum outputs of our core activities:
Contests: Wiki Loves Earth (target: 3,500+), Wiki Loves Birds (target: 1,000 photos + 500 audio), Wiki Loves Folklore (target: 1,000+), Wiki Loves Africa (target: 500+).
Expeditions & Photowalks: Two major expeditions (targets: 700 + 300) and four quarterly photowalks (target: 200+ each).
This totals well over 10,000 files, representing a high volume of new, diverse audiovisual content. The "500 files improved" metric is a conservative target for adding better descriptions, categories, and structured data to existing files during our workshops.
Wikidata (20,000 created / 5,000 edited): As a data-driven organization, we address the foundational data layer. Our content gap analysis revealed a significant lack of structured data for Brazilian biodiversity.
Items Created (20,000): A primary strategic goal is to create approximately 20,000 new Wikidata items for species currently absent from the database. This foundational work is a massive contribution to the entire ecosystem, creating the essential backbone that all other projects rely on.
Items Edited (2,500): This is our key integration metric. For a large portion of the files we upload, we will edit the corresponding Wikidata item to add an image (P18), audio (P51), or other statements, ensuring our content is discoverable and deeply integrated into the web of linked data.
Wikipedia (100 created / 500 improved): Our approach to Wikipedia is strategic and complementary, focusing on efficiency.
Improving Articles (500): Our primary goal is to improve a large number of existing articles by adding high-quality, relevant media. This is a direct, high-impact intervention to address the critical visual knowledge gap we identified (e.g., 40.73% of species articles on pt.wiki have no photo). This leverages our core strength without requiring extensive text creation.
Creating Articles (100): We will create a small number of essential new articles only when a subject we have documented has no existing article, thus creating a foundational stub for the community to expand upon. This is an act of knowledge equity.
Wikiversity & Wikivoyage (10 created ): These platforms are key channels for scaling our knowledge and impact.
Wikiversity (10 created ): We will create approximately 15 new pages to host the recordings and materials from our online workshops, creating a permanent educational library.
Wikivoyage (10 created ): Images from our expeditions are highly valuable for illustrating travel guides. We will create a few new pages for under-documented locations and improve a larger number of existing pages with high-quality photography.
Wikispecies (Strategic Observation, Not a Primary Target): We have intentionally chosen not to set a numerical target for Wikispecies at this time. Our analysis indicates that Wikidata currently serves a more central and interconnected role for structuring biodiversity data. From the perspective of our biologist collaborators, the current structure of Wikispecies overlaps significantly with Wikidata's taxonomic information but lacks the broader, linkable data framework. For our effort to be efficient, Wikispecies would need a strategic evolution to include richer data where our contributions would provide maximum value. We will, however, study the project's evolution and are prepared to engage if its strategic direction evolves.
