Proposal[edit]

1. What is the overall vision of your organization and how does this proposal contribute to this? How does this proposal connect to past work and learning?

We are a group of Wikimedians interested in increasing the visibility of Wikimedia and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within Nigeria, especially in all 36 states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Through this project, we can establish the presence of Wikimedia activities in public universities and recruit and train climate activists, and environmentalists who will generate and promote content, and discussions about SDGs.

From the past work on the first campus tour, we were able to recruit and train over 300 SDGs advocates on 5 campuses who made some appreciable and significant contributions to Wikipedia on topics related to climate change, environmental action etc. Building on the success of the first tour, we are visiting 10 more university campuses to continue our effort in recruiting more advocates and volunteers to help in this regard.

2. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important?

Challenges There are over 200 universities in Nigeria as of 2021 with 43 being federal universities and state universities 48. Most of the students and staff know about Wikipedia's existence but very few know they can contribute to it. Despite having a huge population there is a need for more information concerning content about Africa and Nigeria online with more content available in Paris that in the entire African continent. Most people in Nigeria have not been sensitized about concepts such as climate change, and global warming and how they can contribute to making the environment safe for living. There are few articles in local languages to help with education on the subject of SDGs and these pose a hurdle because before action can be taken there must first be knowledge through education and if this information is not readily available in local languages such as Igbo and Hausa it will be no grassroots adoption of these goals. Through the planned activities in this proposal, we hope to:

Create awareness about the activities of the Wikimedia movement as a Non-profit organization with the goal of decentralization of knowledge by giving everyone access to information that they need. Translate SDGs-related articles in local Nigerian languages such as Hausa and Igbo Recruit and train new volunteers and SDGs advocates on how to effectively contribute to Wikipedia. Provide support in liaising with the Wikimedia Nigeria User Group if there is an interest among participants in establishing Wikimedia Fan Clubs on these campuses.

3. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Nigerian Wikimedians For Sustainable Development seeks to engage students and academics from higher institutions in Nigeria to create and improve Wikipedia articles for the use of the general public.

Nigerian Wikimedians for Sustainable Development intends to help improve the quality of articles being generated by Wikipedians in Nigeria, ensure the accuracy of the information provided about the identified area and bridge the content gap that exists for articles on SDGs relating to Nigeria. We achieve the foregoing through programs like Wiki Loves SDGs in Nigeria as well as :

Advocacy and awareness campaign: The primary goal is about orientation on SDGs and how their adoption and implementation can benefit everyone and also future generations. Training and edit-a-thons: Practical training sessions are organized for new volunteers and edit-a-thons to help with implementing what they have learnt.

4. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Organize 2-day training on each campus focusing on the basics of editing on Wikipedia. Training on using translation tools which aid in translating English articles to Hausa and Igbo. Edit-a-thon to put to practice what they have learnt. National online contest would be organised after the training for one month to be able to engage all partcipants from previous years and this year to participate in an annual celebration of the Global Goals Week, 18-26 September, 2023. An annual week of action, awareness, and accountability for the Sustainable Development Goals.

5. Do you want to apply for multi-year funding?

No

5.1 If yes, provide a brief overview of Year 2 and Year 3 of the proposed plan and how this relates to the current proposal and your strategic plan?

N/A

6. Please include a timeline (operational calendar) for your proposal.

As already stated, the tour will take place for a period of 6 months. The campaign will begin with visits to University of Abuja, University of Port Harcourt, and Obafemi Awolowo University where the focus will be on creating/ improving English Wikipedia articles on SDGs with focus on goals 3, 5 and 13 which are Good health and well-being, Gender Equality and Climate action. The projected period for this phase will be between mid-July and to end of August 2023.
For the next phase, we switch our focus to the translation of articles from English to Igbo languages. This will be of use to locals whose only means of communication is the Igbo language. Our visit will be limited to Imo State University, Federal University of Owerri (FUTO) and Abia State Polytechnic. This will run between mid-September to the end of October 2023.
For the final phase, we visit the Gombe State University and the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria with the Hausa language translation taking place in these universities and this will run between mid-November 2023 to January 2024.

7. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

Yes, I do. Members of this team have been picked from across the Nigerian community and also across the major languages of Igbo and Hausa as well as English. The usernames of the team include Prithee P, James Moore200, Major Lyte, Atibarian,Gwanki, Inyor4mr Ugwulebo, and Lucy Iwuala, Emmanuel Obiajulu, Princechinemerem, HorrorIJ, Chiziqa and Aminwa 21. The Free Knowledge Africa team will serve as advisors to the project.

8. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Geography, Language, Important Topics (topics considered to be of impact or important in the specific context)

8.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

With a lot of online content on Wikipedia, there is an imbalance as more content is written for US and European audiences while neglecting those in the Sub-saharan region. We hope to bridge the content gap by creating articles related to and which can be consumed by Africans and our work will be specifically focused on SDGs (Goals 3,5 and 13). Also not only is the fact that there is a huge gap in Nigerian articles online but local language articles are in short supply and through this project, we hope to contribute to adding up numbers to bridge that gap by translating English articles major and popular local languages which are; Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa for local use which in return helping to actualise the goal of the Wikimedia Foundation, 'making knowledge accessible to everyone in the world'.

9. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Advocacy, Climate Change and sustainability

10. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities? Please note, we had previously asked about inclusion and diversity in terms of CONTENTS, in this question we are asking about the diversity of PARTICIPANTS. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Gender Identity, Geographic , Ethnic/racial/religious or cultural background

11. What are your strategies for engaging participants, particularly those that currently are non-Wikimedia?

Our target participants are non-Wikimedians as most of the campuses do not have Wikimedia presence and we plan through this project to solve that and by extension provide assistance in establishing fan clubs on these campuses. Most team members do have a working knowledge of how to operate a Fan club and have been able to sustain their respective clubs to a scaling point. We will be engaging and recruiting these volunteers through the SDGs hubs and clubs within these campuses. We would send invitations to the identifies clubs like YALI Networks, AIESEC, GLOBAL SHAPERS, JCI,ROTARACT among others. Participants especially those who are non-Wikimedians will be recruited through student union representatives in these respective universities.

In terms of representation, there is not going to be any form of discrimination against anyone who chooses to participate on the basis of gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation as all will be welcome to attend.

Registration forms and a meta page that will provide all necessary information would be provided for all to read. We would also make FAQ available for them to contact for the sake of getting familiar with important things that may be bpothering them.

12. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants and promoting the UCOC and Friendly Space Policy, and/or equivalent local policies and processes?

The Nigerian Wikimedians for Sustainable Development will ensure that all participants are allowed to participate and contribute without any form of bias based on gender, race, language, or geography and also abide by all friendly space policies as outlined by the Wikimedia Friendly Space Policy.

13. Do you have plans to work with Wikimedia communities, groups, or affiliates in your country, or in other countries, to implement this proposal?

Yes

13.1 If yes, please tell us about these connections online and offline and how you have let Wikimedia communities know about this proposal.

The Nigeria User Group will be informed about the proposal through the discussion page. Our existing members from the five communities we have trained would also be informed. Besides, there will be an open role for some of the community members to fill to enable us have an engaged project and also allow them to learn closely.

14. Will you be working with other external, non-Wikimedian partners to implement this proposal?

Yes

14.1 Please describe these partnerships and what motivates the potential partner to be part of the proposal and how they add value to your work.

YALI Networks, AIESEC, JCI, ROTARACT, GLOBAL SHAPERS will act as local SDG partners by through providing experts who would speak on specific subject matters around SDGs.

15. How do you hope to sustain or expand the work carried out in this proposal after the grant?

We’ve sustained and scaled this program from its beginnings supporting more than 300 student editors in 5 universities from previous work in its first term. We know how to scale this program; the main thing standing between our current numbers and the impact we are aspiring is the inability to access needed resources for the accomplishment of the aims we have.

16. What kind of risks do you anticipate and how would you mitigate these. This can include factors such as external/contextual issues that may affect implementation, as well as internal issues, such as governance/leadership changes.

One of the risks we anticipate is low getting the SDGs advocates who are knowledgeable and vast which we access through existing organised communities as mentioned above which are namely: YALI Networks, AIESEC, JCI,ROTARACT, GLOBAL SHAPERS among others.

17. In what ways do you think your proposal most contributes to the Movement Strategy 2030 recommendations. Select a maximum of three options that most apply.

Increase the Sustainability of Our Movement, Improve User Experience, Ensure Equity in Decision-making

18. Please state if your organization or group has a Strategic Plan that can help us further understand your proposal. You can also upload it here.

Yes
