6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

The change we aim to bring with the "1Lib1Ref campaign" is to improve the representation and quality of gender equality-related articles on Wikipedia. By adding more reliable references to these articles, we will ensure that content on women's contributions, achievements, and rights is verifiable and accurate, helping to close the gender information gap on Wikipedia. Research from Wikipedia reveals significant underrepresentation of women, both globally and in regions such as Africa and Nigeria. The statistics paint a concerning picture:

  • Only 19% of biographies on Wikipedia are about women.
  • A mere 13% of Wikipedia editors identify as women.
  • Just 23% of Wikimedia content related to Sub-Saharan Africa covers women.
  • Only 19% of Wikimedia affiliate groups in Sub-Saharan Africa are led by women.

These numbers underscore the urgent need for more women in the Wikimedia movement to ensure quality of gender equality-related articles specifically in the Hausa community, women make up less than 5% of active editors.

Main Challenges:

1. Underrepresentation of Women: Many articles on Wikipedia either lack references or are incomplete, particularly in the area of gender equality and women's achievements.

2. Lack of Reliable Sources: Many articles related to gender equality lack verifiable and credible sources, which affects the reliability of the content and contributes to bias.

3. Limited Female Participation: Only a small percentage of Wikipedia contributors are women, which contributes to fewer references and content that focus on gender equality.

Approaches to Achieve the Change:

1. Focus on Gender Equality Articles: The campaign will prioritize adding references to articles about women's rights, achievements, and other gender-related topics.

2. Engaging Librarians and Volunteers: We will collaborate with librarians and Wikipedia editors to locate and add high-quality references to relevant articles.

3. Awareness and Training: Online and in-person workshops will be held to educate participants about the importance of credible referencing and equip them with skills to add these references effectively.

4. Retention and Follow-up: After the initial phase, a follow-up plan will help retain participants, encouraging them to continue contributing to gender-related articles beyond the campaign.

By addressing these challenges, the campaign will not only improve the content but also ensure a more gender-balanced representation on Wikipedia.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

1. Pre-campaign preparation: This will involve developing a list of articles requiring citations using the #Citation Hunt# tool (https://citationhunt.toolforge.org), meeting with students union of department of library and information sciences (whom are wikimedians belonging many wikipedia propagation Hubs such as "Wikimedia Kaduna Network" and many more) of Kaduna State University.

2. Awareness and training workshops: Conduct 2-day workshops on citation techniques, fact-checking, using the Citation Hunt tool, and creating content on Wikipedia for Wikimedia contributors and librarians. These workshops will include both theoretical sessions and practical exercises.

3. Edit-a-thons: Organize 2-day edit-a-thons in which Wikimedia contributors and librarians will collaboratively review existing articles, improve citations, and create new articles related to gender equality topics. These events will take place in physical and virtual spaces to ensure broader participation.
