Rapid Fund Final Report

Application type: Standard application

Part 1: Project and impact

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

The outcomes of this project are as follows:

1. Conducted 5 Writing Workshops (Original Target: 5): The Sakizaya people prefer in-person gatherings. By coming together for writing workshops, participants can encourage one another to edit Wikipedia articles. When someone encounters difficulties, they can seek help from others who are familiar with editing Wikipedia, as well as consult elders who are more proficient in the tribal language.

2. 59 Participants (Original Target: 25): The target for the five workshops was 25 participants, but we actually had 59 attendees. The higher turnout was due to community members sharing the information with one another. However, only a smaller number of participants were able to translate and upload content to Wikipedia (and Wikimedia). In the future, more effort will be needed to train new participants in editing and contributing.

3. Added 75 Wikipedia Articles (Original Target: 75): Creating new Wikipedia articles is relatively time-consuming and labor-intensive. However, existing editors are skilled in editing, so articles can still be completed on schedule. If we want to expand the pool of editors, additional time will be needed to train new participants. This will help increase the number of Sakizaya-related Wikipedia articles and more effectively document and preserve the culture of the Sakizaya people.

4.Recorded 7 Tribal Language Videos (Original Target: 7): Based on past experience, recording videos of Sakizaya culture has proven to be an effective way to preserve both the culture and the language. However, this process requires significant manpower—identifying and reaching out to elders, filming them, having community members translate the language into Chinese, and editing the videos. It is time- and labor-intensive, but we believe it is a worthwhile investment. Therefore, in this project, we were also able to achieve our original goals and help ensure that the Sakizaya language and culture are preserved.

5. Engaged 5 Editors (Original Target: 5): Consistently editing and translating the Sakizaya language and uploading content to Wikipedia and Wikimedia is not an easy task for the Sakizaya community. At present, we only have five editors who can steadily contribute content. We still need to invest significant effort in finding more community members who are willing to join us in editing Wikipedia and who are proficient in using computers and translation.

6. Recorded 133 Sakizaya Vocabulary Audio Recordings (Original Target: 125): After practice, our skills in recording Sakizaya vocabulary audio have steadily improved. Community members worked collaboratively to record 133 Sakizaya vocabulary items along with their translations. This helps preserve the pronunciation of each term as well as its Chinese meaning. In the future, we hope to document even more vocabulary audio more efficiently.

Part 2: Learning

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: We aim to help participants learn how to use Wikimedia by conducting interviews and recordings with Sakizaya community members, while simultaneously deepening their understanding of their own language and culture. This will be done through activities such as writing Wikipedia entries and recording Sakizaya vocabulary.

During the implementation of this project, we learned that in-person workshops and gatherings are the most effective way to bring Sakizaya community members together. These activities allow participants to collaboratively translate the language, record vocabulary, and interact face-to-face, which helps deepen their interest and motivation in contributing to Wikipedia. This has been especially beneficial for the preservation of Sakizaya culture. Therefore, we hope to have more opportunities in the future to organize similar events that bring community members together to contribute to and preserve knowledge on Wikipedia.

However, another key factor in sustaining participation is financial and material support. Providing meals and funding encourages greater engagement and motivation to join these activities. We hope there will be more funding support in the future to help maintain the community’s operations and cohesion.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

During the implementation of our activities, we encountered challenges due to the fluctuating participation of community members. When seeking new collaborators, we often experienced situations where people joined and then withdrew. Specific issues included:

  • Some community members struggled with translating the Sakizaya language, making the process more difficult and leading them to give up.
  • Others were not proficient in using computers to edit Wikipedia, so they could only provide partial assistance or participate in workshops without contributing substantially to Wikipedia content.
  • There are more elders than younger participants, likely because more elders know the language, but fewer are able to assist with editing. This requires considerable time for collaboration.

Therefore, in order to implement future projects more smoothly, we believe additional resources would be helpful. These could include financial support to retain committed community members who are willing to contribute, more in-person activities to encourage participation and attract people to join the community, and fostering collaboration between elders and younger members—where elders provide cultural knowledge and younger participants handle technology and contribute to creating and editing Wikipedia content.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

At the end of 2025, we interacted and exchanged experiences with other Taiwanese indigenous Wikimedia communities, such as the Amis community. During these interactions, we shared the implementation process and progress of our project, and also learned from other communities how to edit Wikipedia articles more effectively. For example, we explored how to use AI technology to assist in language editing and translation, and how other communities organize gatherings to attract more young people to participate.
