本次訪談內容,為攻廟文化,特別著重於「王爺過生日」等科儀內容,由於是過於冷門專業的訪談,我們在計畫期間進行超過6次以上的訪談,完成2道料理食譜的上傳,辦理1次古蹟踏查活動並實際參與2025年「維基愛古蹟」活動,當然,為了精進維基技術,我們完成3次線上教學(全程台語教學),1次實體教學。 「口述宮廟文化」能夠直接記錄耆老的經驗、語言、記憶,這些「活文化」,不只實際增加「維基媒體計畫」聲音、文字的「貢獻」,也增長了閱讀者對於這些內容的知識,亦能實際瞭解「科儀」過程及內容,相比單純從文獻或網路資料撰寫,記錄口述歷史除了補足文獻缺口、生活細節,也拉進「宮廟文化」與人的溫度。 「料理」作為文化傳承方式,非常有效,兩道料理是台灣大多數人生活上會食用的料理,人人都需要飲食,藉由飲食文化展現傳統文化、諺語,記錄語言,不只是傳承了語言,也讓文化更貼近生活,不容易被遺忘。 應用「維基媒體計畫」,讓更多人得以看到、使用、貢獻,這種「公開、共享 + 社群參與」的方式,也加強了文化保存更有長期價值。 The focus of this interview series was temple culture, with particular emphasis on ritual practices such as the “Birthday Celebration of the Wangye Deity.” Because this topic is highly specialized and not widely documented, we conducted more than six in-depth interviews during the project period. We uploaded two traditional recipe entries, organized one heritage site field trip and participated directly in the 2025 Wiki Loves Monuments campaign. In addition, to strengthen our Wikimedia skills, we held three online training sessions (conducted entirely in Taiwanese Hokkien) and one in-person workshop.

The project of “Oral History of Temple Culture” enabled us to document elders’ lived experiences, language, and memories. These forms of living culture not only contribute new audio and textual materials to Wikimedia projects, but also deepen readers’ understanding of ritual processes and meanings. Compared with relying solely on written or online materials, oral history fills gaps in documentation, preserves everyday details, and brings back the human warmth embedded in temple culture.

“Food” is an especially effective medium for cultural transmission. The two recipes we recorded are dishes commonly eaten in Taiwan. Since everyone relies on food in daily life, presenting traditional culture, proverbs, and language through culinary practices allows cultural knowledge to blend naturally into everyday experiences, making it less likely to be forgotten.

By applying Wikimedia projects, we allow more people to access, use, and contribute to this knowledge. This model of “open sharing + community participation” strengthens the long-term value of cultural preservation in meaningful and sustainable ways.

這次的計畫,不單單是「一個人」的事,而是幾位夥伴共通的故事。


「宮廟文化」的記憶:我們大多數從小有接觸宮廟文化的一群人,但大多是去廟裡「收驚」、「拜拜」又或者看到路上看到「繞境」的情景,由於我們並不是一群與「宮廟事務」參與的人,有些過程其實從未接觸,透過這次的訪談,才知道「王爺過生日」前前後後的「科儀過程」,也因為這次的訪談又衍生出其他「科儀」的介紹,我們發現採集的過程,礙於計畫期間的限制,「未知」比想象中還多,無論是專有名詞(語言)、物品、過程,這些都應該都需要在未來的計畫被記錄。


「料理」的記憶:我們發現,「雞酒(麻油雞)」的比例,我們每人家裡都有自己的傳統作法,無論是出自於長輩,或是自己現在做料理之後的改良,比方說,以前長輩並不認為麻油「久煮」有什麼關係,也不覺得麻油「量多」有什麼影響,但隨著現今越來越重視健康,對於「油的發煙點」、「油的使用量」的理解,確實都與過去不同。還有一種方式是額外增加食材或是應用的部份,比方說、「三杯雞」,有的夥伴家裡會增加「米血糕」、有的是「杏鮑菇」,還有,我們也發現現在的衍生料理,其實很多,有為了愛吃海鮮的「三杯花枝」、或是為了吃素者的「三杯豆腐」、「三杯杏鮑菇」等等。我們從來沒有想過,一道家常菜背後,原來包含了這麼多家族、傳統文化的層次,不僅僅是語言、料理過程的記錄,更是很有意義的傳承方式。



讓台語文化以數位方式走向世界:在這樣的執行過程中,這些內容並不只是留在我們的內部記錄,而是實質以書寫、上傳、公開,讓台灣的「宮廟文化」、「台語」、「傳統料理」,能被更多人看到、理解、學習與傳承。

This project was not simply the work of “one person,” but rather a shared story created collectively by several partners.

Memories of Temple Culture: Most of us grew up with some exposure to temple culture—whether being taken to the temple for spiritual calming rituals (sio-tsing), making offerings, or watching processions pass through the streets. Yet because none of us had ever been directly involved in temple affairs, many ritual procedures were unfamiliar. Through this series of interviews, we learned for the first time about the complete set of rituals surrounding the “Birthday Celebration of the Wangye Deity.” These conversations also expanded into other ritual practices. During the process, we realized that—limited by the duration of the project—there was far more unknown than expected. Technical terms (language), ritual objects, procedures—all of these need to be documented in future projects to preserve this knowledge.

Memories of Food: We also discovered that the recipe for sesame oil chicken (chicken in rice wine and sesame oil) varies from household to household. Each of us has our own family method—whether inherited from elders or developed through our own cooking experiences. For example, older generations did not worry about simmering sesame oil for long periods or using large amounts of it, whereas today people place greater emphasis on health, smoke points, and oil consumption. We also observed variations in recipes such as Three-Cup Chicken: some families add rice blood cake, others add king oyster mushrooms. In modern cooking, many creative variations have appeared—Three-Cup Squid for seafood lovers, or vegetarian options like Three-Cup Tofu and Three-Cup King Oyster Mushrooms. We had never realized that a simple home-style dish can carry so many layers of family memory and cultural tradition. Recording the language, cooking process, and these variations is not only meaningful documentation—it is a powerful form of cultural transmission.

Bringing Taiwanese Culture to the World Through Digital Means: Throughout the process, our work did not remain confined to internal notes. By writing, uploading, and openly sharing our materials, we allow Taiwan’s temple culture, Taiwanese language, and traditional cuisine to be seen, understood, learned, and passed on by more people across the world.

藉由錄音、錄影設備前往社區、古蹟地,訪談長輩,記錄儀式過程、拍攝古蹟、料理過程,後續整理訪談稿、影音字幕與文字內容,將整理後的文字上傳到 Wikisource,將料理製作成「有聲食譜」上傳至 Wikibooks,並,並將聲音、影片放入 Commons,確保 Wikisource、Wikibooks、 Commons的內容有連結,可公開、可閱讀,透過社群宣傳、聚會,讓更多人參與、貢獻。 By using audio and video equipment, we visited communities and heritage sites to interview elders, document ritual processes, photograph historic locations, and record cooking procedures. We then transcribed the interviews, created subtitles, and organized written content. The edited texts were uploaded to Wikisource, while the cooking materials were produced as audio recipes and published on Wikibooks. Additionally, all audio and video files were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, ensuring that content across Wikisource, Wikibooks, and Commons remains interconnected, accessible, and publicly available. Through community outreach and gatherings, we encouraged more people to engage with the project and contribute to these open knowledge platforms.

以多媒體(聲音、影像、文字)相互應用,以此保存「文化」,確實是可行性的。因為將訪談、儀式、料理等以錄音錄影與文字整理後上傳開放平台,確實補足文字記錄的不足,亦能實質保存「台語」這個語言,達到傳程的目的,透過參與、編輯與上傳、聚會與教學,形成「社群+開放內容」模式,擴大文化保存的參與度,若未來能持續透過這樣的方式長期運作,將更具永續性。 Using multimedia—sound, video, and text—in an integrated way to preserve culture is indeed a viable approach. By recording interviews, rituals, and cooking processes, and then uploading the organized audio, video, and written materials to open platforms, we not only fill the gaps left by traditional text-based documentation but also meaningfully preserve the Taiwanese language, achieving the goal of cultural transmission. Through participation, editing, uploading, community gatherings, and training sessions, we are shaping a “community + open content” model that broadens engagement in cultural preservation. If this model continues to operate in the long term, it will provide even greater sustainability for cultural heritage.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

專有名詞:這期的訪談比想像中困難,是個超級工程,許多「專有名詞」完全無法理解,光聽台語完全不知道是什麼,我們會先在網路找尋可能的資訊再跟耆老確認,因為耆老看不懂羅馬字,我們也需要用讀音的方式跟耆老確認,我們一直到10月都還在確認專有名詞。例如:siak-iâm-bí這個詞無法理解,生活上也不會遇到,一開始完全不知道是摔什麼東西,後來猜測可能是「鹽米」,但生活上並沒有鹽米這種東西,我們知道「鹽」有淨化作用,但不知道「鹽米」是什麼,曾經還以為是不是一種特別的鹽,而且一般印象也應該是「撒鹽」而不是「摔鹽」,後來才知道鹽跟米長期日曬,是清穢常用的陽性之物。這種儀式就是把鹽跟米混成一桶,要用力往下、往火丟下去,動作就是要大力,看起來就是用摔的,就叫做「摔鹽米」。也因為如此,更讓我們覺得復振台語,並把傳統的宮廟信仰記錄下來是件很有意義,也需要趕持續做的事請。


我們也發現到,有些詞未來應該需要再延伸介紹,像是有提到gō͘ pó, thè hû, su thòaⁿ…等。目前這些詞彙都沒有機會再請耆老詳細介紹,具體上,也不清楚是什麼物品或是哪一種儀式行為。

Technical Terminology: This round of interviews turned out to be far more difficult than expected—truly a massive undertaking. Many of the technical ritual terms were unfamiliar to us. Even when we heard them in Taiwanese, we had no idea what they meant. Our process was: first search online for any possible references, then confirm the meaning with the elder. Because the elder could not read romanization (Pe̍h-ōe-jī), we also had to pronounce each term aloud for verification. We were still confirming terminology all the way into October.

For example, the term siak-iâm-bí was completely incomprehensible at first. It is not a phrase one encounters in daily life. We initially guessed it might mean “salt and rice,” but there is no such everyday item as iâm-bí. We knew salt has purifying qualities, but we didn’t know what “salt-rice” referred to. We even wondered whether it might be a special type of salt. Moreover, our general impression was that purification rituals simply sprinkle salt, not throw it.

Eventually, we learned that salt and rice, after long exposure to sunlight, are considered strong “yang” substances commonly used for cleansing. In this ritual, salt and rice are mixed in a container and forcefully thrown downward—into fire or onto the ground. The movement is deliberately strong and looks like a “slam,” hence the name “to throw salt-rice” (siak-iâm-bí). Discovering this made us even more convinced that revitalizing Taiwanese language and documenting traditional temple practices is deeply meaningful—and something that must continue.

We also realized that many terms deserve further exploration, such as gō͘ pó, thè hû, su thòaⁿ, and others. We did not have the chance in this project period to ask the elder for detailed explanations, and at this stage we still do not know exactly what objects or ritual actions these terms refer to. 料理食材: 兩道料理是計畫通過就開會討論。雞酒(麻油雞)的部份,開會討論時,比較沒有太多疑問,確實是很有文化性,也很具代表性的料理,無論是傳統或是現今,或是諺語、進補或是店面、家中都很常見。但另一道料理確實花了很多時間考究,翻閱很多料理書,也查找許多資料,想起台灣一直都有「熱炒文化」,決定選擇三杯雞(或者有人稱為乾式麻油雞)當第二道料理,但沒有想到靈魂人物「九層塔」並沒有想像中那麼常見,從6月到8月完全無法在菜市場買到,差一點考慮要買盆栽來栽種,所幸,9月在超市總算買到少量的「九層塔」。另外,就技術而言,從食材準備到到製作,再到剪輯,錄音與上字幕,這些工作項目比預期還多,我們本身不是從事配音跟剪輯的工作,也花了不少時間進行,經過此事也讓我們發現,藉由影片完成有聲食譜其實對我們來說,相當困難,或許未來專注在我們較上手的項目是比較好的。 Ingredients and Cooking: The two dishes were determined through discussion right after the project was approved. For sesame oil chicken (chicken in rice wine and sesame oil), there was little debate. It is a highly cultural and representative dish—traditional yet still common today—and appears in proverbs, medicinal cooking, restaurants, and home kitchens alike.

But the second dish required extensive research. We reviewed numerous cookbooks and searched widely for references. Considering Taiwan’s strong “stir-fry culture,” we decided on Three-Cup Chicken (also called “dry-style sesame oil chicken” by some) as the second recipe. What we did not expect was that the key ingredient—basil (九層塔)—would be extremely difficult to find. From June to August, it was completely unavailable in local markets. We even considered buying potted basil to grow it ourselves. Fortunately, in September we finally found a small quantity at a supermarket.

From a technical standpoint, the entire workflow—from ingredient prep, cooking, filming, editing, recording, to subtitling—was much more time-consuming than anticipated. Since we are not professional voice actors or video editors, we spent considerable time learning and adjusting. Through this experience, we realized that producing video-based audio recipes is actually very challenging for us. In the future, it may be more practical to focus on areas where we already have stronger skills.

我們透過社群聚會與實際的計畫推廣活動,將本次執行經驗與成果分享給對台語、宮廟文化與傳統料理有興趣的族群。分享內容包含播放訪談錄音與影像、展示料理製作流程與成果照片,以及說明訪談中實際遇到的挑戰。例如,我們在辨識專有名詞「摔鹽米(siak-iâm-bí)」時,需反覆查找資料並向耆老求證的過程,往往能引起參與者的共鳴,讓大家感受到文化採集的真實性與親切感。透過這些分享,不僅提升了社群參與度,也鼓勵更多人投入開放文化內容的貢獻行列。 We shared our project experiences and outcomes with people interested in Taiwanese language, temple culture, and traditional cuisine through community meetups and project outreach events. Our presentations included playing interview audio and video, showing photos of the cooking process and final dishes, and explaining the practical challenges we encountered during interviews. For example, our effort to identify the term “siak-iâm-bí”—requiring repeated research and verification with the elder—often resonated with participants and conveyed the authenticity and warmth of cultural fieldwork. Through these forms of sharing, we not only increased community engagement but also encouraged more people to contribute to open cultural resources.

首先,Wikimedia Commons 未達成原訂 500 次上傳目標,主因為本期的計畫著重與推廣,「古蹟踏查」教學的的部份較多,實作上傳的部份,受限於參與時間,並沒有想像中多。 其次,Wikibooks 的貢獻量為 0 次,原因在於台語仍是 Wikimedia Incubator 的孵育階段,尚未正式成為獨立的 Wikibooks 專案,因此編輯活動自然無法反映在正式的 Wikibooks 數據中。

First, we did not reach the original target of 500 uploads to Wikimedia Commons. The main reason is that this phase of the project focused more on outreach, and a significant portion of our “heritage site fieldwork” activities centered on teaching rather than hands-on uploading. As a result, due to participants’ limited available time, the number of actual uploads was lower than expected.

Second, the contribution count for Wikibooks is listed as zero because Taiwanese (Hokkien) is still in the Wikimedia Incubator stage and has not yet become an independent Wikibooks project. Therefore, our editing work cannot be reflected in the official Wikibooks statistics.

Wikisource 與 Incubator 的編輯量分別達到約 120 次與 78 次,均超出我們原先的預期。回顧規劃階段,我們對各專案的內容範圍與執行策略並未設定得足夠細緻,也未事先充分掌握哪些專案仍處於孵育階段,導致最初的數量預估略顯不準。 The editing counts for Wikisource and the Incubator reached approximately 120 and 78 edits respectively, both exceeding our initial expectations. Looking back, we realized that our planning did not define the content scope and execution strategies for each project in enough detail, nor did we fully understand which projects were still in the incubation stage. As a result, our original numerical estimates were somewhat inaccurate.
